Homework Theory - in the sandbox
So I’ve been watching some stuff on YouTube on what people do to finish songs, and get out of the infinite loop creating mode.
The consensus seems to be that limitations are the key.
A variety of limitations.
Amount of tracks.
Time limit / deadlines (very important)
Track limit.
Sound source limit.
Effects limits.
…. And so on….
With that being said I’ve made the first page in my iPad screen my current sandbox
This is where I’m putting the apps that I’m limiting myself to use to build a track. I’ve moved all other apps out of my way on other screens. Of course you can’t really limit the list inside your host, but hey that’s where the mental strength comes in.
I’ve also put a timer on the main page and i set it to a 30 minute stop watch so i can give myself 30 minutes of pure focus time. If i need more then ill add more but i need to block everything else out for that time limit and just focus.
This will help learn more about the instrument and effects I’ve chosen as well as push the creativity Out of each app, and hope to find new ways to use it.
Curious of what other tricks/ideas that you guys have to help you focus and finish within a set of limitations

I think I’ll still buy new apps obviously 😆🤣 but I’m going to use this as an opportunity to blow the dust off older apps as well, mix in a variety of new apps to learn and the ones I’m pretty comfortable with.
I will say moving apps around on the iPad still sucks! One app at a time …can’t we get some updates to this!

One thing i do a lot of these days is use a chord building app to help me get the bones of a song together. I use Suggester 2 and adore it. Sometimes Piano Motifs gets me to the starting gates as well.
I find that if i limit myself to NOT starting to flesh out the actual song until I have at least a chord progression for 2 distinct sections that flow nicely into one another then I'm off to the races and can usually finish a song.
I find i tend to get stuck working in a one section loop and it's challenging to figure out where things could go from there.
If i can work out at least one section change beforehand then it breaks that cycle and i can hear other possible changes more easily.

Man that’sa good idea… try to work on the section changes early, or the chord/notes for the next one and have a transition in mind.
I dig this suggestion, and need to apply it to my practice. Its a lot of fun creating loops i love it but actually having a place to take it after that is even more satisfying!!
I’ve been committing my midi to audio so that i have to keep it and can’t keep making edits, other than to eq/mixing stuff.
I love making great loops too. The nice thing about coming up with a chord progression and a transition to another chord progression is that I'm still free to make loops based on the progression. Don't even need to use the chords, just follow the changes.
My initial sandbox is actually not that limiting! other then audio/midi effects as I’m not going to take those out of their effects folders there’s too many,… this is what I’ve picked for round one.
This is still a lot and hard to do. During this practice i started to really see how many instruments i have and could feel it! I was like oh man but i want to play with that one too!! To every synth that I’ve ignored for months!
So the hosts/samplers at the bottom and these instruments are the “limit” does not really feel like a limit.
Next time I’m going to narrow this down even further i think.
Dang i forgot about polyphase and was deleting a lot of old apps… and was thinking i cannot delete this one!! So had a quick jam. At least i used the synth from my sandbox 🤣
