Bassalicious 2 - midi mapping Mod to AKAI (problem)

Hi all,

Couldn't manage proper description in the title.

Basically, Bassalicious 2, great app.
I use it with my M-AUDIO midi keyboard, and use the modwheel and tremelo wheel.
Works a treat.

For control, I sometimes use an AKAI MPK Mini III.
It has a great wee joystick (most apps can use this by mapping).

Bassalicious is different, it obv sees standard wheel(s) (like with my M-AUDIO 🎹).
The app lets u map a lot of controls and on-screen knobs, but Modwheel is not one of them 😔

Quite a shame, I'd like to be able to use the joystick on my AKAI to tweak stuff.

----anyone know a workaround?

  • Hi. We need to clarify some things.

First, Modwheel is just MIDI CC#1, so it works like any other knob control. Pitch Bend is different because it uses a special MIDI message.

Do you know what MIDI messages the joystick sends? It's probably in the manual, or you could use a MIDI monitor to find out.

Are you using Bassalicious stand-alone, or as an AUv3 plug-in in a host like AUM or Audiobus?

Could you use the MIDI Learn in Bassalicious to map the joystick inputs?

    Hi, @SkillipEvolver.
(Note: I have Bassalicious 2 app, but I’m not an AKAI MPK Mini Mk3 user. So I’m not sure if the following information I wrote is correct.)

    *
You may want to use MPK Mini Mk3 Program Editor or MPK mini MK3 Firmware Updater.
    https://www.akaipro.com/downloads
(Note: When downloading files, do not confuse the MPK Mini Mk3 Program Editor with “MPK Mini Play Mk3 Favorite Editor”.)

    *
[Note: I only watched “8:32 - 9:41 (Joystick Settings Continued)” of the video below.]

Akai MPK Mini Mk3 Tutorial - Editor Software Overview

    *

As you may know, if you use the MPK Mini Mk3 Program Editor, you may be able to change the joystick settings to be more suitable for Bassalicious 2.
It seems that “PITCHBEND, SINGLE CC, or DUAL CC” can be set for each of the X and Y axes of the joystick……

    Important Note (maybe):
If you check MIDI CC numbers/values of the joystick as they appear in the MPK Mini Mk3 Program Editor screen and compare them to the linked webpage below, you might be able to find out why the ModWheel/joystick is not working on your environment. (maybe)
    https://anotherproducer.com/online-tools-for-musicians/midi-cc-list/

……And below is an example of joystick settings in the MPK Mini Mk3 Program Editor. (I’m a MIDI novice, so I used @uncledave's “MIDI CC#1” explanation above as a reference. Thanks to @uncledave.)

Example of a joystick setting on MPK Mini Mk3 Program Editor:
X axis: “PITCHBEND” (≒ PITCH wheel)
    Y axis: “SINGLE CC#1” (≒ MOD wheel)

(Note: My intention is to have the MPK Mini Mk3’s joystick “mimic” Mod wheel and Pitch wheel of a common MIDI controller/keyboard hardware.)

Once the above joystick setting is saved, I guess it can be loaded by pressing any of the 8 pads while holding down the Prog Select button. (But I'm not sure.)
    Note:
-The aforementioned “8 pads” and “Prog Select button” are on the AKAI hardware (= MPK Mini Mk3), not on the software (= MPK Mini Mk3 Program Editor loaded on Mac/Win).
-I don’t know if the joystick setting is saved in the AKAI hardware itself or only in the software. (I guess both of them may save the setting/assign, but I'm not sure.)

    *
Workaround if you are currently unable to use the MPK Mini Mk3 program editor:

As you may know, pressing any of the 8 pads while holding down the Prog Select button on MPK Mini Mk3 hardware will change the setting/assign for DAW. And I guess it could be done with a standalone MPK Mini Mk3 hardware. (But I’m not sure.)
Maybe, even if the MPK Mini Mk3 is in factory default setting, each “MPC, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and FL Studio” DAW setting is assigned to one of the 8 pads. (But I'm not sure.)
So, if your AKAI MPK Mini Mk3 hardware is currently set to MPC mode/style(?), changing to a different DAW mode/style might make the ModWheel/joystick on Bassalicious 2 work. (Again, I guess it could be done with the standalone MPK Mini Mk3 hardware, even if it is in factory default setting. But I'm not sure.)

  • Cant you just map via host.

    Aum or Drambo.

    In Aum.

Parameters will be in channel lane.

In Drambo. You press map. Move app knob. Then there will be a knob appear in Drambo. You then map controller knob to the knob in Drambo.
