Song Of The Month Club - July 2024

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

  • My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

    Where were you
    When I was
    Caught inside this empty box?

    Where were you
    When we fell
    Trapped inside an empty well?

    I don't want to fall
    I can hear you calling
But I don't want to fall
    Again

    And so we see
You got me where you wanted me
    And so I hear
    Your call

    Just one drink
    For the road
You and I have got a code

    Just one glass
    A little one
And now our troubles have begun

    I don't want to fall
    I can hear you calling
But I don't want to fall
    Again

    And so we see
You got me where you wanted me
    And so I hear
    Your call

Thanks! This one was completed a couple of weeks ago :)

  • A couple of months back, I submitted “Man in the Restaurant” for my SOTM entry. This is its sister song “Man at the Gig” which tells the tale of another chap who I met, who appeared on the edge of a complete breakdown. The original version is a song I’m proud of (and have posted in the past). I have now re-recorded it for piano and voice. Hope I’m not breaking the “one song per month” rule - I’d be happy to have feedback on either version.

    Original:

    Piano and voice:

Winter in Madrid, the man at the gig counting down his working days
Regaling stories of bundled regrets, a lifetime’s malaise
A banker of decades standing, a release in his creative writing
Took 20 years, 800 pages, his friends didn’t read it and the irony is biting

The man at the gig, he loves the band, but
Just 10 minutes in offers his right hand, he says
It’s time to go, I’ve seen it all before, and the singer he can’t sing anymore
And like the Man in the Restaurant, the Man at the Gig,
Is losing his internal fight, he turns around and disappears into the night

37 years, she’s been the only one but now she hates his new tattoos
He’s given his all, always been there for them, but should he twist now and risk losing it all
Should he hide in his music, his books and allotment, or get lost in the sequel
Will it be enough in the golden years, is he equal to what lies ahead?

Really like it, shades of Tim Minchin storytelling. Dramatic piano setting the mood. I did find the guitar slightly distracting from the song/piano (in first part, not second).

At the end, a sustained chord/note fading slowly might maintain feeling the song into silence, the song deserves room for a "that was good" as it fades out. :-)

    Piano is Chefs kiss.

  • This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the violin, cello, and flute; Noire for the piano; Jaeger for the singing voice; and Omnisphere for the other instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled The Mountain.

Lovely melodic synth vibe running through the song, and a very catchy number all round. Nice rhyming of ‘was’ with ‘box’ - little thing I know but it’s not an obvious one and it grabbed my attention. I agree with your comments last(?) month about your voice - you’ve made great strides, so much so that I would love to hear a more stripped back and exposed vocal on a future song. Really strong song Richard, loved it.

Hi David, another beautiful piece of music from you. This month, I listened through to your piece once, but then played it through again, adding a bit of Mark Knopfler type sparse lead guitar over the top (along the lines of the intro to ‘Local Hero’) It was a very enjoyable experience - your track leaves lots of room for such improvisation, and whilst it clearly isn’t the intention of the track, adding guitar lines work really well in my opinion (if used with restraint).

  • Something VERY different for me, but super fun to write.

Well. You know I’m a total fan of your work and voice. This is no exception.
The mix sounds very loud to me. I’ve been listening to music all day long, and this mix really sticks out.
Nothing else to complain about, it is a great great great song.

As a matter of purely personal taste and monumental bias for the piano, I really LOVE the piano version much more. I don’t know, the vocals fit better, the vocal take is super organic, like you re right in front of me right now, the mood of the lyrics fits better, everything is just really good. I’d love even more just a piano/voice version. The strings don’t bring much here for me.

Maybe, one day, you will produce music that I don’t like. Maybe if you record something totally wasted on the verge of a psychotic break. Mmmm I doubt that.
Your esoterical (to me) workflow and insane skill at improvising always makes my head and heart go boom when I listen to your music. Listening again after a few months, I still absolutely love it.

Great song! Relaxing and catchy at the same time. Killer synth lines (guitars and drums too, but they are always good B) ).

I love it! Probably the best song I've listened from you in the SOTMC! The dramatic intro is amazing, and I love both the piano and the strings. Just two small things: your voice is always panned center and lacks any kind of stereo widening. I'm not saying it's bad but maybe I would have like at least a bit of stereo panning. Also you can barely hear the guitar, maybe it deserves some more space? (just read the last line of your comment: I'm commenting on the second song you posted)

Poignant lyrics, and wonderful piano accompaniment. The outro organ/synth lead is my favourite part, lovely melody.

  • @BillS this month you really put so much passion in your performance. Like you really did a great job with the lyrics , which I usually account for last, but they are so good and they give so much to the song . Great job , I love the last verse, powerful stuff man

@jo92346 Joe you are the man, I felt like Denver would’ve asked for your autograph . This is a beautiful and upbeat song, reminded me of sweet child o mine country style and upbeat honky tonk. I love it. Where do you hail from sir? (I’m from NYC)

@DavidEnglish great track as always Mr consistent! I wanted to ask when you say two keyboards improvised, you mean you record both simultaneously ?? Calm and soothing. What mode do you prefer when improvising?

Lovely! Definitely not my genre but I enjoyed it, seems really well written. Just something small, I'm not really convinced about the vocals, there seem to be weird echo effect? Apart from that, great track, the violin rocks!

  • thanks guys @richardyot

@yellow_eyez I was born French. Left the country and continent when I was 18. Always trying to find if grass was greener a couple miles further. Didin't work.

@unlink that is flutter echo, not really anyway to remove it totally. The vocals are a mix a recording with a 30 bucks amazon usb mic, a shitload of post processing in antares, mix with AI, additional processing in another AI thing and more FX in the final stage in Logic. The only solution would be to marry a professional male singer, or 2 or 3, so I always have them readily at my disposal. And also a room with good acoustic and some good mics.

Shame! Who doesn't have 2 or 3 professional singers waiting in your studio, always at your disposal?!

  • My submission for the month:

I made this for a friend that is working for a research institution and was asking for music for their educational videos. I liked the result so here you are :)

  • @unlink this is a great track. So far my fave of the month. I like the middle section a lot, with the bell like tone that pulses and then octaves up before going into like an FM synth sound. Great buildup to the 2 minute mark, nice arrangement. Great job as usual man!! I’m sure he’s pleased with the result too.

Is that a guitar the section from about 1.30 to 2.20? It sure sounds like one :)

I love the overall atmosphere in this track, and there are some very nice contrasts between the bell sounds and the other patches. Overall the layering of parts works really well.

Whole lot of fun to listen to! Very entertaining, and I thought the vocals sounded decent. Although I watched the screen capture video it’d be interesting to know what you used for the instruments, e.g. fiddle, guitar and ukulele are audio tracks whilst most of the others are MIDI. Great stuff.

  • Thank you @BillS they are apple loops. i just happened to like the small uke and guitar parts, and wanted to use them in some piece. That was the one.

I really needed a fiddle, but couldn't find anything convincing, I had to resort to apple loops cut in lot of little pieces and transpose to have it sound as I wanted. Then I exported the whole collage in audacity to brushed off the "asperities" manually before exporting back in logic. Still easier than finding a decent midi fiddle thingy.

Lots of pretty tunes interweaving here, and the bell patch is lovely and used to good effect. Good track!
