Question about usb c hub for iPad

I want to be able to connect my USB-C microphone to my iPad while charging it. Tonight in a shop, I tried a hub but found that the USB-C port couldn't pass audio through. It seemed fine for just data, but that's not what I need.

Can anyone recommend a small and portable hub that allows audio to pass through? I plug my headphones directly into the USB-C microphone, so I only need a hub with two USB-C ports: one for charging the iPad and one for the mic audio. I'd be happy with a slightly bigger hub that has a couple of extra ports, just nothing excessive. I know the most elegant solution would be the official Apple Magic Keyboard, but it's too expensive, and my current knockoff doesn't support pass-through charging.

I have a lot of different USB-C hubs, but this is the smallest and lightest if I wanna charge my iPad Pro in the same time I use my iPad for sound in&out…

  • That one have only one USB-C port - is that enough for 80 dollar?

There’s great hubs for half that price, with more useful ports…

Yeah, it’s a little spendy, but I don’t remember paying $80 for it .. I think I paid 60 . But it’s worked just fine with zero issues for the past couple years and the other ports have been useful to me , as well .

I also like that the cable connecting the hub to the iPad can be completely detached .. so if there’s a connectivity issue there (which there hasn’t been) I can just replace the cable rather than the whole hub.

  • I just bought a an EZquest hub for my M1 iPad because my wavelink - which worked with my 2018 iPad - does not work with the M1. I bought the EZQuest 4 port USB-A hub - which i really like. They also have a multi hub with 2 usb-c ports and more. $50. https://ezq.com/usb-c-multimedia-8-in-1-hub-details.html

Thnx, thing is, I usually have my ipad on a keyboard, so this would be hanging down, not resting on anything, then it might put stress on the port.

So yes, maybe something with a longer cable would be better. Something that fits flush, like a hyperdrive, might be good, except that it is also not supposed to be ideal to use those with a smart or magic keyboard - again, could end up damaging the port.

Also folks, are you saying all these hubs can pass audio both ways on any of the USB C (or USB A) ports?

The tiny one I suggested has two USB-C ports, one with PD (power delivery) and the other USB-C ports has sound both in and out - 20 dollar and really quality built…

I noticed you mentioned that, cheers. But this short cable looks like it would strain the port perhaps if dangling in the air, which it would almost always be, given the way my ipad is mounted

    Ok, I understand…

But, there’s always a but, but, why not complement this with an cheap extension cable?
For 10 bucks you can get an 0.8m cable with a good quality…

Yes, audio works both ways. And, one of the reasons I bought is that it has an 11" cord and so the hub can rest on the desk.

I’m having a good experience with this GEWOKLIY USB Hub that also has an M.2 slot for SATA or NVMe storage devices. Since it’s an experiment I started with a 256GB NVMe card for $25,

But as a hub it solved a USB-C port issue over my Anker hub which has a USB-C Power Distribution port
and a stub USB-C connector to access my iPad as the host. What on some other hubs might be implemented as a USB-C port the Anker has implemented with a headphone port. Sometimes, I don’t want that… I want to connect a USB-C cabled device or use Apple’s USB-C Headphone Adapter.

But back to this new NVMe storage device… it took me back to my desktop days. For an iPad to see a storage device you have to format it before it will be recognized by the iPad. I had to use the MacOS Disk Ultility and I formatted it as an MS-Fat file system.

If there’s another IOS app for this step I’d like to know or if other file system formats would work with IOS.

The USB-C Hub is packaged similar to a cigarette sized pack with a magnetic lid over the NVMe slot. The whole hub can be velcro’ed to the back side of a Magic keyboard… currently the Anker is attached using velcro and the Anker can be daisy chained off of the GEWOKLIY hub for more potential ports, I guess. Experimenting with these connectivity options is pretty interesting if computer architecture and device integration is your thing.

  • If you want to spend a lot of money the teenage engineering tx-6 is my best purchase n years.

Lol... I already said an Apple Magic keyboard would solve this for me but would be too expensive a solution, so I'm hardly likely to consider that Teenage Engineering mixer 😂

Ha yeah man i feel you! It could serve your YouTube channel well tho if you do ever consider it.
I grabbed a usb c hub on amazon for 20$ originally just to have a headphone port… but i haven’t tested the usb for audio yet. If you don’t have one in the next few days ill test it when i get back in town

With the amount I currently earn from YouTube payouts, brother, about £60 a month (edit: just checked, actually closer to 50), it would take more than 3 years to pay off what that mixer costs where I am. Hard pass, lol. I also don't use hardware gear apart from (Bluetooth) midi controllers and a mic, so have literally zero need of something like that. Cheers tho

Maybe get the official Apple adapter: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/HR862ZM/A/belkin-connect-usb-c-data-charge-adapter

They mention audio pass-through in the product description.

It's actually by Belkin, didn't notice it first because it looks like the ones Apple makes.
