Apologies for the UK election thread

No more political threads for me.

  • Yeah I find that political threads, even if started with the best of intentions, always eventually turn toxic. Best to avoid that heat.

  • Yes quite. I was having a nibble myself - it wasn’t quite toxic yet but it was only heading one way. I’m old school here. I had forgotten about the resolution to keep clear of these political debates so apologies from me too.
I think it’s a nice one that you opened this thread to acknowledge this @cyberheater so kudos to you for that.

Yes. No more politics or UFO threads. Folks get far to worked up.

Oh god, that UFO thread got majorly out of hand, lol. Honestly, the non-music threads here which have any kind of politics or controversial content are just super divisive and not conducive at all to this being a good community. In the current state of the world, it seems too easy for things to spiral into nastiness. There are plenty of other places to have those chats. Cheers!

Exactly. I mean we're all adults here, but in my experience there are three things that seem to trigger adults...

    1. Politics

    2. Religious Beliefs (or lack thereof)

    3. Shite drivers

I can remain calm and open-minded regarding the first two, but when someone rides my butt on the road, runs a stop sign, and/or fails to signal before turning, that "entitled driving" shit instantly enrages me. 😂 Then again I think most of us can agree on the third.

  • Well the forum welcome thread says just talk about music-related topics, and based on how well-behaved they are compared to anything outside of music as a topic I think it’s a pretty good rule.

I don’t believe that definition has been strictly adhered to, but happy Independence Day, to US and UK citizenry.

I personally think that while this community is at its norm best serve music, the world needs a bit of attention. And so, politics (not the run of the mill stuff), and other large events would do with some coverage, or even a song(s) about them...

( I personally think everything is political since we are social creatures and do our best and our worst in the aggregate )

I welcome any PM so as to keep the forum itself clear

We all have our triggers. Best to be aware of them. It gets tricky when they are actually music related. In my case:
Bad Midi clock and sync implementations 🙀

You have the whole of the Internet to discuss this stuff.

Doesn't need to be on the AB Forum.

I'm surprised nobody here has set up an alternative forum on another web site to discuss politics, football, TV/movies etc...

Aren't there sites that allow you to set up forums for free?

  • If we can’t discuss politics let’s discuss the inability to discuss politics.

  • Tbf, despite any of the spats, I found that this was one place that discussing politics was halfway interesting as with most of the internet there’s no accountability and hardly any good faith debate, whereas here it felt like arguing amongst friends. But I can understand that some people just don’t like it so, whatever. Shame though…

Indeed, threads here do get overheated but in comparison to other places on the internet there’s more depth to the debate, and usually more respect to one another.

I fully agree, this place would be sterile devoid of ‘other’ interests.

  • It’s a sure sign of forum coolness that we’ve now got a thread to apologize for another thread. Cheers!

  • In related news, I want to apologize in advance for the upcoming US elections. Sorry, world!

The less said the better. Politics worldwide are a sad state of affairs. Best to stick to music. Nothing wrong with a protest song though.

  • never saw a UFO topic here, sounds fun. Thats a tough discussion because they could be right Infront of our eyes and we might not see them. I sometimes relate higher intelligence to playing chess. You are looking at the board and you just cannot see the move a higher-level human player can see, then you have AI. It's like your mind is completely blind to the reality right Infront of you, it's very difficult to accept on the ego.... chess makes me cry.

anyway, nice to see everyone showing love.

That UFO thread it came, it probed, it disappeared, a bit like UFO’s supposedly do.

Excellent point; totally agree. I apologize for apologizing. I could not be sorrier for being sorry.

It’s important this. Politics aside - right, left, centrist - the choice of government has a big impact on our pockets and lives.

From a musician’s perspective, the colossal drop in living standards and amount of cash in our pockets limits how many apps and Apple kit we can purchase, promoted and discussed on this very forum. Hardware and software prices have gone up, yet we have less cash left to spend in it due to eye-watering rises on all our other bills and outgoings. Brexit - the loss of freedom of movement has had a devastating effect on musicians opportunities for performing abroad, and for music festivals getting bands from overseas to perform here. Import costs have gone through the roof.

This is a big deal for musicians.

How does it affect music festivals and the people wanting to be hired. Just turning up and getting paid etc ?

Well @AudioGus , you're in charge of making the popcorn. I'll buy us a couple pints each. Let's see how this shitshow turns out. 😂

    1. Taylor Swift (Swifties) 🤮

I'm so triggered by your response! How dare you! 😂

I'm teasing of course, lol. Well, I do play a Taylor Swift song on the piano for any Swifties in the audience of my regular gig, and it's definitely a crowd-pleaser for most Millenials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha. ;) In other words, gratuity in my tipjar. 🤑

But I get what you mean - many fanbases of musicians (and TV shows, and franchises, etc) can be chock full of unnecessary drama and toxicity.
