StepPolyArp Feature Request

Hi folks

I’ve just contacted Laurent about about a new feature and a minor tweak to StepPolyArp which i think would make a big difference in creating arps with more variation.

He got back to me very quickly to ask me for more detail, which I’ve supplied below. If this might be of interest to you, please do contact him and let him know, or add your thoughts below. The more the merrier!

1) The feature was to be able to give notes a Random Velocity between some Min and Max
2) The minor tweak (which is what I REALLY want to see) is in the Event Editor options, adding a Random (or Random Other) and Highest Note options to the Event Editor panel.

Here’s a simple example of how Random and Highest Note would be very useful to create an electronic bass line with some variation, shown in AUM to show the notes I’m sending to StepPolyArp.

I want to create a simple 4 step bassline as follows:

  • Step 1 is always the lowest note
  • Step 3 is always a random note, chosen from the notes held down
  • Step 4 is always the highest note.

I could just use “5” here for highest note, but this breaks if I am not holding down 5 notes. I could use “7” but this will not give the highest note if I am holding down more than 7 notes.

In this example, I might always want Step 1 = Lowest note and Step 4 = highest note regardless of how many notes I’m holding down.

With Step 3 being “Random” or “Random Other” (i.e. random note but not the one which played previously) and Step 4 being “Highest Note” as shown below, this is easily achieved.

I can of course use the Random note order, but this means having to program all the other steps using 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 etc. The great advantage of a Random option in Event Editor, is that randomness can be placed exactly where it is needed, rather than affecting all steps.

Here’s another simple example of how adding a bit of randomness would make a simple arp more interesting. On the 7th step of this 8 step Upwards arp, a random note is chosen.

Ideally, it would be great to have two Random options:

  • Random (any note can be chosen)
  • Random Other (any note can be chosen except the one previously played, to avoid playing the same note twice in a row)
