Rare interview with Charlie Parker

This is the first time I’ve heard Bird speak. It does not disappoint. Hard to believe he succumbed to drugs.

  • Perhaps a little Off-Topic, but, I collect old records, especially really old 78rpm:s,

In my collection I’ve got and tripple “album” 78rpm with Charlie Parker, bought after a concert in Hälsingborg Folkets Park 1950 - inside the sleeve there’s a autograph written by mr Parker also…

  • Hi LL, though I play trumpet Charlie Parker has been a great influence to me. He was a favourite player of my dad, who took up alto sax when I was high school age (I have this instrument here for safekeeping at present it’s a “cigar cutter” Selmer Super Sax). Being an intelligent, articulate and artistically strong person does not insulate you from mental illness, or chronic pain, which my dad was suffering both of by the end of his life. Having suffered periods of severe pain from gout (not for some years now, for which I believe a largely vegan diet has helped) I can understand a little what this could be like in the long term. It does not surprise me that Charlie passed young, on the other hand we can only dream what he might have achieved - and all the other musicians lost too soon (sat listening to Lee while writing this).

  • Nice find! I’m such a huge fan, but such a troubled soul… have you seen the clint eastwood movie?

  • @pedro, yes, I’ve seen the film. Not sure if it was true to life or not. Hearing his calm, thoughtful and measured voice was surprising and reaffirming.

  • Great find. I came across this a few months ago and I agree. As musician to musician, it gets straight to the good stuff!

Wow. Great find indeed. I’ve never heard his voice before. Is it just me or do peoples speech sound more dignified and well mannered the further back in time we go? I’ve been listening to old interviews a lot on YouTube lately and it’s interesting how vocabulary use changes over time.

I met an old musician in a nursing home once who played gigs with Parker. Talked about him a lot. He had such a high respect for him. Hey @MadGav, another trumpet player here!

  • thank you @LinearLineman.

Practicing 11 to 15 hours a day during 3-4 years certainly leads to results. Being in love with an instrument, being passionate about music.
