And now for something completely different - live hardware recording: Nun of the Above

“My child... the hour draws near. Soon you will join the great embrace. You've known for some time that this world is just a game…” - Saint Maud

So I was thinking about a second tattoo, 40 years after I got my first. Something to reflect the long strange trip across careers and genders I’ve taken, something to encapsulate my still, frankly adolescent urge to be against… something. Anything, really. Authority, power, ‘The Man’. (especially the man...) And the phrase, and image popped into my head, fully formed. My life’s spiritual and physical journey has rejected faith, gender consistency, and cost me a life companion. No gods above, no masters below. And so, in a very real sense, and whether I like it or not, in my life experience, in my spiritual viewpoint, and on official documentation, I have become… a Nun of the Above :)

In another departure for me, the whole track was created by playing, and live tweaking, my new toy, the Roland S-1, using its own onboard interface for the cleanest, simplest connection from gear to iPad, just a single USB C to USB C cable. No dongles, nothing. In the interests of maintaining this purity, the only instruments, and FX (delay and reverb) on the track also come direct and solely from the S-1, played live (I didn’t use the sequencer, just the arp), straight into AUM File Players. It has the usual Roland wtf menu dive issues, but you can’t argue about its bang for buck. I got it on 6 months interest free too, so it costs me less than I spend on coffee per month.

Enjoy, hate, ignore, etcetera. All (any?) attention grovellingly lapped up.

A riveting read as usual, and love the pun. Are we gonna see pics of this tattoo? 🤔 😂

Ha! Maybe… I’m currently looking into which artist in my new neck of the woods to entrust with my precious wrinkly flesh. If I recall correctly, you are the person that put me onto Saint Maud, whose sacrifice to the matters of the spirit somewhat exceeds my own, so if I do get it done, you’ll be the first to know.

My only other tattoo is now sadly faded, (overlaid black and red hearts above the scroll legend ‘love it to death’ in a traditional ‘sailors’ style by the great Muswell Hill artist Lal Hardy, still going: https://newwavetattoo.co.uk/artist/lal-hardy/, on my upper left bicep. Nun of the Above will match it on my right.). So I need to look into if re-inking is possible too… Or maybe even a trip back to that there Lun-dun for a reunion with Lal.

    A late-life crisis! :)

  • This is a great track. I love that it’s only one instrument and that you’ve kept it minimalist. There is great power in using this sort of approach in the arrangement.

As for the tattoos - I’ve never been able to go down that path. Had the odd idea over what I might have, but I couldn’t go through that process myself.

  • Excellent stuff, love the way you take instruments / apps and bring them into your own sound world 🎼🌎😊
