Lip Syncing

I've just seen a youtube short regarding Taylor Swift lip syncing. The premise seemed to come across as 'she is saving her voice to do many long shows' and that it's a perfectly acceptable, almost professional thing to do.

Have I been under a rock for too many years as I can no longer go to live shows, or is this a commonly done thing now? Or has it always been? I'm damn sure some of the live shows I've been to in my youth, they were quite obviously singing live as at least sometimes they struggled to hit certain notes.

O and I'm no Taylor Swift fan. Couldn't even name one of her songs.

  • One massive show that I worked on a while back used a combination of some live singing, and tons of perfect studio takes, with an engineer dedicated to live mixing them in and out to get the best possible vocal mix alongside the frenetic stage action. Absolutely incredible work to see happen, constantly many times a day during rehearsals, an insane amount of attention to detail goes into these big ticket shows.

All the gigs I've ever been to have been live singing, except maybe , there was a scandal that Jesus Jones were lip syncing at Reading Festival 1989, but Mike Edwards the singer claimed it was a very windy day and his voice was being blown around...

Just saw Fontaines DC 2 weeks ago and all the vocals were obviously live.

But then I don't go to taylor swift type concerts I guess.
