The Ideal Bass Sound - Dan Worrall

Can anyone help me get closer to what Dan Worrall describes as the ideal bass sound?

He’s using Twin 3, I’d like to use Moog Mariana and says at 25:18.

Two sine waves 32’
One a fifth higher
Tricks our ears into hearing a low fundamental that’s not really there
3rd Osc up an octave 16’ for mid definition

I created the attached (zipped .marianaPreset) in Moog Mariana but it’s nowhere near the rich sound Dan gets.

Anyone with Mariana prepared to recreate Dan’s patch and upload it so I can understand what I did wrong?

I didn't have time to try to match the sound of Worral's patch but i noticed a fee things in yours. Oscillator 2 is not set to a fifth above oscillator. A fifth is 7 semitones. You also have the subs turned on. There is no sub mentioned in nis patch and the waveshape for the oscillators is meant to be a sine wave if i understood. He has a hint of drive and chorus on.

  • An improvement but still not quite there. I’ve attached a tweaked version 2

  • By all means if anyone wants to try and replicate the sound in any other iOS instrument and share the preset I’d be up for that too. Could be useful for everyone

  • ButterSynth version without the 3rd mids Osc as there was any one available. Sounds quite pleasing though. Better than Mariana?

  • Drambo Instrument Rack version. Sounds pretty good.

  • Dagger Synth variation with a bit of Glide. Not the same as Dan’s Ideal Bass Sound but sounds great. Dial in Drive (Amp top right) to taste.
Zip file will import a Bass bank with the preset inside

  • As good as they sound, there’s nothing quite like Dan’s Twin 3 sound to my ears. Maybe there really is something special in Twin 3, unless Dan has some extra special sauce applied in post?

Not at all. Any 2-oscillator synth can do it.
The trick is that when adding a second sinewave oscillator pitched at +7 semitones to the mix, it sounds like you added an oscillator one octave below, without adding the low frequency energy (resulting in potentially higher bass levels possible in loudspeakers or headphones without distortion).
Here's a Drambo rendition to play with, I've added faders for easier, drawbar-like control.
Start with the fundamental, then add the 7th and listen.

Dagger needs some filter treatment because there's no sinewave in the oscillators (note that this bass effect is not limited to sinewaves, it works with other waveforms too):

Lovely work from you as always @rs2000

Here are RS2000’s Drambo and Dagger presets for anyone playing along. I just added a little touch of chorus to the Drambo patch which you can delete. The Dagger patch will create a folder called RS2000 DW Bass with the patch inside which you can then drag anywhere you want and just delete the folder after. Don’t know why Dagger doesn’t let you just share an individual patch.

  • Thanks @Nuuksio! 😊
