SampleTank for iOS. What happened ?
@ikmultimedia : Has this idea been abandoned ? I don’t believe it’s not profitable for them as I’ve bought up several of the extras, the IAP’s etc. Any hope on the horizon?
Comments
If it were profitable, it would get some love from them. iOS music app development is not a very profitable enterprise.
@Telstar5 - The last time the account you tagged visited this forum was in December 2020. If your question is really intended for them to see and not just a way of generating some general discussion (which is fine), you might want to try a more direct way of reaching them such as: https://www.ikmultimedia.com/contact-us/.
It has passed years since I used Sampletank, both on iPad and in Logic Pro on my Mac…
Nothing wrong with the product, but, something like a love & hate relationship is perhaps the reason…
IK Multimedia is a perfect example of a company that was one of the pioneers ( at least among the bigger companies ) in iOS music when the hype was big. The dust has settled in recent years…
This is a good topic. I break out SampleTank every so often because it has some really nice sounds in it, and some very cool features like multi-instrument playback, built in patterns for some of the instruments and extensive MIDI controls and effects. I've also bought a few of the IAP's as well. It appears to be based on SampleTank 3, which is quite old at this point. I bought it a couple of years ago, but I would not buy it today - there are too many other better options with great instrument sounds, and with AUv3 support. I'm still glad that I have it though - I use it from time to time. Some of the guitar sounds are quite good, and easy to sculpt via the controls.
I don't know what I would tell IK Multimedia if I contacted them, though. If they just ported SampleTank 4 Max to iOS I don't know that I would be interested - the interface doesn't really lend itself to the touch interface - if they came up with something that had the great sound quality that is available in the desktop version, but optimized for use on iPad, and which could share projects and interact with the desktop version (which I have) and support each other, sort of like Logic Pro does, that could be interesting. I'm willing to pay a higher dollar amount if there's value in the product (e.g. FabFilter effects), and I think there is an argument to be made that there is a segment of mobile users that are willing to pay higher prices if the app delivers desktop quality and power to the device. Additionally, If you could buy the desktop app and then pay a lower price for the mobile app, but still have something that provided a seamless workflow on and between both, but still make the mobile version compelling in itself (again Logic Pro is getting there), that's an area that is underutilized I think and could be a great strategy. Copying what Apple does, but carving out your own style and identity and even improving on it is a viable strategy, IMO.
This thread could be a philosophy of “old” apps thing. If you will permit:
I consider apps like this to be virtual musical instruments and I use what I like without thinking about age. I also have real musical instruments that I treat the same way. My favorite guitar I bought new in 1979. It really sounds fantastic now, partly because the wood has aged(Alvarez acoustic) and mostly because I have so many great musical memories and experiences with every string.
I feel similar about Sampletank. I pulled it out of mothballs today and it’s great for what it is. I’m a DAW guy and although I have LP4I, I am most comfortable with DAWs that have more tenure on iOS (CB3, n-TrackPro, AEM) they all use Sampletank with no issues. So I’m good.
Hope continues to remain on the horizon along with audio for NanoStudio 2.
I own about 25 IK Multimedia apps and a couple get regular use:
Tonex for guitar stuff
Hammond B-3X for any organ uses
MixBox CS for that “all-in-one” slot FX choice (the dynamics processors are my favs)
I think the business discussions at IK Multimedia must be really interesting. Where will
app development produce the best return? Obviously, the competition for SampleTank
is tougher with so many other great choices. We saw Harry Gohs take a run at the
sampler+instrument_package store market with Xinematix and it ended up being the whole enchilada for $20 after not much revenue along the way. The free transfer of instruments to AudioLayer was a super bonus for fans of Harry’s work (@virsyn).
The difference in business models of Virsyn and IK Multimedia are pretty clear in terms of “overhead”.
I had it on desktop, but never used it. So I deleted it and haven't missed it yet.
I have used SampleTank in virtually all my Cubasis 3 projects, I have also purchased extra sound packs, it may be IAA but a lot of the instruments have multi samples that change dramatically with varying velocities.
I have recently bought the 13” iPad Air M2 only to find SampleTank no longer links to Cubasis, it opens as normal and I can play the onboard keyboard, but it will no longer respond to midi? it still works perfectly on my iPad Air 4.
I have aired my complaint on the App Store under the user name of Midimania, up until now I thought I wa# the only one who had this issue!
Have you tried opening SampleTank standalone first before loading up Cubasis?
This maybe a legacy IAA-based app problem with Cubasis. I can start the Standalone SampleTank and set up SampleTank in an AUM session and access it via MIDI. Maybe Cubasis has dropped support for IAA apps. It’s only a matter of time before IAA apps without updates stop working in many DAW’s.
Hi,
Yes, this is something I have to do every time before launching Cubasis. As I wrote above, ST works perfectly as IAA in Cubasis 3 on iPad Air 4, but not on 13” iPad Air M2.
What I'm trying to get at is does it work on the M2 if you open it first or not? Sorry, this isn't clear to me from what you've written.
Having to open IAA apps first is a somewhat random thing that can happen to any IAA app, and isn't consistent across all apps, hardware or OS version. It just happens sometimes. If it's not working at all on the M2 then that's different.
I have an M1 iPad and it doesn’t work there either but it does in AUM.
I can’t help but feel déjà vu on the Sampletank doesn’t work on platform xyz comment.
No updates in 5 years on an 11 year old app. Those apps from 2013 have been dropping like flies.
Still… it works in AUM because @j_liljedahl might use some of these great IAA apps in his work.
Yes, I can play ST in stand-alone mode on the 13”. It also works in AUM.
I have set up AUM to connect ST to Cubasis, it works on the Air 4 but using the same procedure on the M2 produces nothing!
Take a look at Korg iM IAA, that’s been around for years, and not that long ago it was updated to AUv3, just waiting for iwavestation to be updated, when I mentioned this to the devs, their reply was “watch this space”
Great to know .McD…Thanks…
Me too - bought v3 of Sampletank to my Mac years ago, and, never really liked it (better on iOS in the past).
This $200 for Sampletank v3 isn’t my best investment to this date…
On desktop SampleTank is nothing to write home about. On iOS it sounded surprisingly fresh. Still use the app from time to time.
A Lot Of People Wait For iWavestation To Be Updated To AUv3 !!!!!
Interesting - This may be getting further off topic, but Korg Gadget 3 update has a gadget module available if you purchase iWavestation according to the specs. Is that module already AUv3?
https://www.korg.com/us/products/software/korg_gadget/specifications.php
That doesn't seem to work, you just get the ability to access the Milpitas gadget from inside Gadget 3.
If you have Gadget 3, you can see every AuV3 compatible gadget (edit: when you browse the list in AUM or another host), no matter if you have the IAP or not, and Milpitas is not one of them.
iM1 has a separate AuV3, and it looks like each stand alone Korg app will need to have AuV3 implemented separately, and Gadget 3 won't work as a bridge, even if the app is available as a gadget.
FWIW, Korg has implied that all of the standalones will eventually be released in AUv3 format.
What are the likelihood of sampletank getting somewhat of update? Some sounds in the app are amazing...
Yeah, right? Definitely
As mentioned above, it‘s about four years ago that someone from IKM was logged in here.
As much as I’d like to see it imo there’s are zero chances other than making it compatible with a new OS so they can keep selling it and selling iap’s for it. I’ve invested sooo much money in their apps and iap’s but nearly every one has been abandoned….seems like when AUV3 came out IK Multimedia decided they were done with IPad apps for the most part…they released a couple AUV3 apps I really liked….MixBox to be specific…but I think they’ve completely abandoned all the apps I invested in. Ironically I just bought T Racks Max on sale for $49.99 plus tax….it’s completely worth getting imo while it’s on sale
