Goodbye City Life

Just a little slow, laidback, cool jazz. I tried to simulate Miles or Lester Bowie. I put this together a little at a time over several months and don’t remember exactly what I used. I like to render everything to audio and disconnect the MIDI instruments. It makes the mixdowns go faster. I decided to finish it last night. I know the muted trumpet is from one of the Session Band Jazz packs. I cut up a dozen or so short bits and pieces and rearranged them to “fit”. I’m pretty sure the piano is Ravenscroft. Peace!

Thank you, Joseph! I rather like this one, too. I really enjoyed working up the horn parts. I don't play either of those instruments, but like to have them in my music from time to time. The SB horns are easy to work with in that the output has a lot of cut points where I can chop them up and rearrange them and still sound somewhat natural. If nothing else, it provided me with a couple hours of diversion from the chaos of the world. I was hoping a few more of the usual suspects would have weighed in, but I guess that's just how it goes. Have a great day, buddy!

  • Great atmosphere! Film noir: a monochrome scene as the camera tracks through deserted city backstreets, with neon lights blurred by the rain spattered lens.

Thank you, Colin. Rod Serling couldn't have said it better!

  • Cool as a cool thing 🥶

  • Muted trumpet is really expressive!

  • @GeoTony @MrStochastic Thanks guys. What I like most about the SB apps is that the instruments are all real, played by top studio musicians. I found a few synths that come really close, but single note input on the iPad doesn’t capture the phrasing and articulation of the real thing. I am going to try using it as much as possible since it seems that every iOS update breaks it a little more each time. The latest problem is a nasty buzz in the background. I have to constantly restart. Fortunately, it has good state saving so I can usually pick up where I left off. I had hoped that when Apple adopted Unix that these things would all go away. I was a Linux developer for years and never had the problems like I had with commercial operating systems. Open Source rules! Thanks for listening.

Nice one. When I saw the title I first thought of the “green acres” song (its in the lyrics) but I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, very miles like feel. You really have a knack for assembling things together well, like a musical painter. I also find the session band apps handy. When it come brass sounds, still nothing beats the real thing. Hey, you didn’t help develop Linux Mint by any chance, did you? I’m using that one now and finding it a great distro.

That’s where I got the title. I always thought it was a great line. Probably not the best fit for the song, but I thought it was amusing.

We used a few different flavors of Linux. This is going back about 15 years. I think the last one was Mandrake, now called Mandriva. Sounds like the name of a new drug. The great thing about Linux is that “it just works”. I did a lot of coding in PHP and Perl. It was a lucrative time, but the owner spent more time golfing. There were only 4 of us but we cranked out some serious product. Unfortunately, it came to an end and I had to move on. I still use Ubuntu on my desktop, but rarely use it anymore. I prefer to sit outside with my iPad and make “music”.
