Pencil-less Staffpad Composing Using Harmonicer as the Generator
I’m always experimenting with ways to generate MIDI that StaffPad can render.
While watching YouTube app demos I saw that Kai Aras’ new “Harmonicer” can spread
it’s output over 5 MIDI Channels which is so important to have coordinated instrumental
parts in StaffPad. I’ve begged a few developers to provide “divisi” output for their chord apps
but only Scaler 2 seems to have that option.
But Harmonicer has chord and Arp options with the 5 channel output… Nice way to create
a complex arrangement of parts in StaffPad with any pencil entry required.
This is my first experiment after buying this new app.
This is my process:
- generate the input to Harmonicer with a Riffler Flow instance in AUM
- I capture the Harmonicer output with an Atom 2 instance
- I export the Atom 2 recording to Cubasis 3 and insure I have a good 5 part MIDI rendering
- I import the saved Cubasis MIDI file into Staffpad and start assigning the tracks to various instruments using Cut and Paste
- To add more variety I manipulate the tempo and transposition of sections in StaffPad without requiring the pencil

Could you try this with only strings? I like the pizzicato plucks in the beginning. I like the tempo change at 1:52.
Do you want pizzicato strings or arco?
Better yet… attached is the MIDI file in a zip enclosure. Import it into your StaffPad and it will assign the default flute-like voices. Cut and paste the notes into some strings:
Nice experiment… especially the fast passages !
if I understand divisi correctly doesn’t chordjam allow this ?
Im stubborn.
Bought the swams and have decided there wont be midi as the majority may need pitch bend ( unsure if recordable ) and also the actual bow movement of strings via screen.
Good thing is. The most difficult to master ( is probably the double bass ) The strings in general have good control.
Can defo see me playing for the Witcher 4.
Its ( the bass at the mo )
More challenging then turntable scratching. Just to get a good stem.
Avery quick look and I can see that ChrodJam does allow you to put each chord note on its own channel. I’m not sure it will provide the controls to spread voices over 2-3 octaves yet.
Great idea, nicely done!
I've really been getting into Harmonicer too, automating some of the voices while playing has interesting results for me.
Is it easy to adjust velocities in Staffpad or must you do each note separately?
This is very nice. What do you miss without the pencil? I suppose you can't input any kind of articulation?
