Battle of the iOS midi sequencers !!

STACKS vs
NEON
vs BAM (I know, it’s really a drum machine ) vs PRISM
There are just so many hours in the day…Forgive me if I’ve omitted other good ones, they’re of course fair game too.

Let's just compare asparagus, hamburgers, pancakes, potato chips, and oranges while were at it. 😉

(Sorry, just having a little fun. I can't wrap my literally minded head around making such an open ended comparison in context of a "battle". Without knowing what you hope to accomplish with such widely differing approaches to sequencing, I haven't a clue how to answer.)

I guess you're hoping for a listing of the major differentiators between them?

    I only use Xequence 2 🤗

Can’t do Xsequence 2 because you can’t mix time signatures (single bar of 5/4 within a 4/4 song.

    Hopefully , if anyone knows.

Sequencers that also have solid CC recording/playback? Not many do.

I would say GR16 as a midi sequencer is pretty amazing. 16 parts note/cc in and out.
As IAA. I wish it was just as good as auv3.

Not a great midi editor, but for on the fly it’s great for jamming.

GR16 + xequence as a midi sequencer hybrid could also do wonders.

  • STACKS: hasnt been released on ios yet so...
NEON: super duper permutation machine -- not what I'd consider random, although it can feel that way. It all comes down to how the various lanes and conditions rub up against the other lanes of sequencing notes and parameters.
BAM: more straight ahead sequencing and a great clip launcher and song composer.
PRISM: been on the beta. Bought it. Used it. Found it flexible but rather convoluted YMMV.

If you want a easy to use but full of potential I'd recommend EG Nodes
If you want a motif machine that can double if you put in enough work as a clipish launcher and song maker I'd recommend Riffer.
If you want other special features and better composing as well as a BYO synth drum machine Drambo
If you want to use MIDI like you would use a Multi-tracker audio recorder Xequencer 2
If you want to use a sequencer ANYWHERE and can handle a tracker workflow SunVox

Like Wim said, kinda hard to compare asparagus, hamburgers, pancakes, potato chips, and oranges

If decision paralysis is the problem here, then I'd recommend considering EG Nodes. One app, six styles of sequencers, and it can host AUv3 sequencers if that isn't enough. Are any of those sequencers best-in-class? Not really. But the simple tool you actually use is often better than the top of the line tool you never do.

  • what the heck is Stacks?

  • @audiblevideo :You managed to do it though and quite well..Thanks for that..excellent !!

  • I love Nodes and have been using it more and more. The different modes it offers really pull together a complete environment.

But I will always cherish MidiDreams. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, it’s the closest to the classic sequencer style I’m so familiar with, and just fits my head.

  • may I also mention the sequencer in WoodSynth (stand-alone and AUv3) :

    • has 16 steps (times 4 using Variations)
    • has 2 CC's out.
    • sends midi velocity and pitch wheel.
    • has variable step duration.
    • has ratcheting (any rhythmic repetition of the note in a step)
    • has probability on step on/off, on note value and on ratcheting.

    Woodman

  • What about NanoStudio 2?

  • @woodman

    has variable step duration.

    NICE!

  • There are so many Sequencers this day, and every one has it's strenghts and weakness. You should choose a sequencer that fit's for you and your style of music making or genre.
Some music only use a simple sequencer and don't need a complex one.

  • Illumina, Nanopore, BGI, JK, SRY

  • Don’t forget Senode and Cykle

  • LK or BAM, from Imaginando.
For me they check most boxes on features.
They aren't perfect but quite decent and powerful; and devs keep working on improving them.

Nanostudio2, if there wasn't BAM (or when I want a cool drumkit + synts out-of-the-box).

Cubasis3 is also quite reliable (but it's inferior to Nanostudio and BAM on routing/bussing).

  • I just bought midiDreams today, it is almost perfect for what I need, just wish that I could set the octave range higher than 2.

Also if you are looking for a great step sequencer, which I always am, then Stepbud does a nice job. These 2 are the only ones that I have found to match my workflow of pre-programming all of the pitches then jamming by turning steps on, where the odd steps just act as rests.

I can get strokes to do that sort of with some setup but not as immediate as midiDreams or stepbud. Although turning the steps off and on is a bit clunky in stepbud because there is a slight delay when doing it, that and I have a hard time getting used to flats when all my other apps just call them sharps no matter the key.

  • I’m still trying to resist buying Midicakes arp 3 as I can’t seem to fi d anything in software that comes close .
