In the Middle of Somewhere
Say you’re fifteen.
And you’ve got a guitar.
So it doesn’t matter, how lonely you think you are.
Everyone’s lonely. Not just you.
Everyone’s lonely. Who knew?Even the girl in another room.
It doesn’t matter, she’s further than the moon.
No way you can get there with a balloon.A balloon is your dreams.
A giant lottery it seems.
Spinning and flipping like a guitar.
And falling so far.
Into the middle of somewhere. The middle of somewhere, a guitar.
This began as an improvisation using Pianoteq Guitar sound. It’s a classical guitar but I ran it through Primo amp simulator into Dustbin and it reminded me of ancient times; our band in the basement.
I also used Cykle to try out some chords and riffs. It’s a sequencer with it’s own qualities.
I used Hammerhead playing my own sampled laundry room drums for a good clunky sound.
Later I wrote some simple lyrics and fed those to Suno AI. I tried out different styles until I got the closest I could, and used the Musiclab app to isolate the vocals.
I cut and paste everything into my DAW.
Using AI for vocals gives me a chance to write songs and I plan to keep trying with that method. It’s a challenge not being able to make my own melody; that’s probably coming if civilization continues.
I used this method before here:

Really cool! It sounds like something by Tom Waits.
Civilization will survive, but start stocking up. It will be rough for a while.
Thank you kindly! Doubt if it's that cool.
I still think you might find some interesting use for your stuff with AI voices.
“Hey, kid. I’ve listened to your demo ‘In the Middle of Nowhere’. I could make your band famous. But I need to meet the singer first. Take a phew head shots to see if chicks dig him.”
I’m hoping @Lady_App_titude finds Suno AI too because she’s always looking for singers that can stay in tune and work for a “Thank You” or something cheaper than a video game.
I love your arrangements. Always very carefully produced.
That’s good. I like the spare arrangement. Is there an iOS AI vocal app?
Thx @Paulieworld for reminding me about Tom Waits. I can never remember his name. But I’m not sure this sounds like him. Remember his song What are they doing in there? I think that was him. Unique.
Not so much the voice, but the attitude of the song. Waits sounds like he smokes 10 packs a day. This makes me think of “Small Change” although it’s not even remotely close. Go figure.
I used Suno which is a website not an app. It works pretty easily and is free to a certain point. You can then download the files of the songs it makes. I did use an iOS app called MusicLab which can split a voice from the background instruments. I was lucky that it happened to be in the same key as the guitar part I had already recorded. I had to cut and paste sound snippets to fit with the rhythm of the song.
Thanks for your comments.
I thought maybe it was my drum sound. I used samples I made hitting stuff in the laundry room with a stick. I've listened a lot to Tom Waits and admire his songs greatly. I had no intention that I was even trying to emulate that. But I hoped it sounded a bit teenage primitive.
Loved it 🙏
Thanks! your discerning ear is highly valued.
Listen mister, we're not selling out to nobody! You already want us to change the title of our song to 'middle of nowhere'. You said "who ever says 'middle of somewhere'." Really? Well, you can keep the singer; he was just good for this one song anyway.
Thank god we have our own tools to avoid the pitch from those tools.
