Using AudioBus to send midi from one USB midi keyboard to another?
Hello Fellow Musicians,
Earlier this week, I started fiddling around with the midi features within AudioBus 3 on my iPad running iPadOS 17.5.1. I have an 88 key Cossain foldable digital piano, which I would like to use as a midi controller to trigger the sounds of my Roland e-X50 61 key arranger keyboard. I have a USBC to USB hub which I use to connect both keyboards to the iPad.
I have discovered that when both keyboards are plugged into the iPad via the USBC hub, I can set the Cossain keyboard as the Midi input device, and the Roland E-X50 as the Midi output device, as well as play the default grand piano sound on the Roland. However, using this method, I am unable to trigger any of the other sounds. When I try to change the sounds on the roland and play them using the Cossain, I only get the default piano sound. I'm wondering please whether anyone is able to provide any ideas as to how I can go about this? I was previously using an app called OneManBand to accomplish this, however it does not have AudioBus support, is outdated by 5 years, and only allows me to switch to the 128 preset GM sounds that are listed in the app itself, therefore I cannot make use of the other sounds using this method. If this cannot be accomplished using AudioBus, I'm wondering whether any of you could please advise as to how to accomplish this without the intervention of an iPad, or in fact whether this is at all possible? I've tried reaching out to my local Long and McQuade music store here in Canada, as well as an extensive google/YouTube search, neither of which yielded any promising results. I would greatly appreciate any help and feedback you are able to provide.
Thank you so much in advance! Take care, and happy music making!

Do you have a link to somewhere I can look at the Cossian keyboard manual?
I can see that the Roland keyboard uses bank select and program change to select patches. I can't tell what the Cossian is capable of sending.
Hello there,
Thank you so much for your message!
Unfortunately, I was not able to find an electronic copy of the manual of the Cossain keyboard as I was for the Rolland E-X50. The Cossain only comes with a short hardcopy manual, which only briefly mentions being able to plug it into a computer for use with DAW's and the like, but doesn't mention being able to use program select to change the patches. As a test, I plugged the Cossain into my MidiPlus MiniEngine, which is a standalone General Midi sound module, and as I was changing the patches from the Cossain side, it was not changing the patches on the MidiPlus. However, when I plugged my Roland E-X50 into the MidiPlus, the Roland did in fact change the sounds on the MidiPlus as I was turning the data wheel on the Roland.Same thing worked when I used the Bank Select buttons.
Ok, so it’s likely not Audiobus specific. The Cossain keyboard may not output midi when its patches are changed. If so then there’s really no way to change the Roland patches from it.
But let’s find out if it does output anything first. Place a midi monitor in the FX slot between the Cossain input and Roland output. ShowMIDI, MidiSpy, and Streambyter are all good, free ones. Once set up, try changing patches on the Cossain keyboard and look for any midi output. If there is, then if you post a screenshot, we can look to see if there’s anything that can be done.
Hi @SienaT I think you have to switch midi channels to get to the other sounds in your Roland arranger. I would prefer bringing the iPad along instead of the roland. At home I would use both keyboards as midi input for all my ios synths.
Did you try connecting your cossain thru bluetooth? Would make it less tethered.
Hi @alfred !
Thank you so much for the suggestion! I haven’t thought to give that a try, as I had forgotten that the Cossain did midi over Bluetooth. Definitely worth a shot. I’ll keep you posted.
