Cone Of Silence (cool jazz for a warm Sunday afternoon)

Dedicated to Albert “Al” Freels. My jazz mentor.

Al was my dad’s college buddy. They both served in WWII. Al was in Europe, and dad was in the South Pacific. They met at after the war at IIT as engineering students. They both moved to Downers Grove in the 50s, and helped each other build their homes. For as long as I can remember, our families spent Christmas and Easter together. Al played tenor sax in big bands and would always play jazz records during dinner. A lot of Count Basie and Duke Ellington. He called them “cool cats”. I first heard jazz at the kid’s table. One year he said… Hey Paulie, I want you to hear this cat. His name is Miles Davis.

Hey Al, if your listening up there, I hope you dig it. It’s the best I could do with an iPad.

  • What a great story and fantastic tribute. I'm a sucker for Jazz myself, and this flowed so nicely mate. :) Honestly I should produce another Lofi track soon.

He was quite a guy. He had a huge collection of jazz records dating back to the 30s. We miss him.
This track is a complete contradiction. I was trying to simulate a small jazz combo without every playing a single note. That's just wrong, but it was fun to try. I sat outside with my iPad, smelled the grass, and had a few cold ones. It was a good day. I hope you give it a try sometime. Have a good one!

  • Nice track. Has a cool mix of drive and a feel of laid back chill. What did you use for the drums?

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but the drums were just a loop I found in a Blocs Wave pack. I added a little bit of variety to overlay them using MIDI and some default high hats and kick that come with Cubasis. The drums were just supposed to be there for atmosphere and not to add much rhythm. I pulled them out completely in a section and I doubt if anybody even noticed. I used Session Band Jazz 4 for some of the horn parts. That's always fun. Unfortunately, the SB apps don't play nice with the latest iOS updates. They were fighting me all the way. As soon as I routed them into Cubasis thru AB3 or AUM, Kaboom! I had to listen to them in the background and hope that they lined up correctly. I eventually got one that worked.

Coming from a real jazz guy, I really appreciated the nice words. Like I said to Al, I did the best I could with what I had.

Sounds like a nice time. :) And he sounded like quite a nice guy as well.

  • It’s like you throw everything up in the air and then , amazingly, everything comes back down to earth making absolute sense 🙏

Thanks, Tony. It doesn’t always come down making sense, but that’s what makes this so much fun. Have a great day.
