Any app similar to mininova ?

I had a MN forever ago and have always regretting letting it go. I loved the sound of it.

I am curious if any apps are in that ballpark. Maybe the digital D1 from audio kit? Or maybe that one’s called king of digital now? I’m not sure lol its confusing what’s what i need to look into it.

But I’m loving the sound i hear from the MN on my YouTube rabbit hole of listening today… and would like something on iOS to prevent me from buying another hardware synth ?!!

I don't own a Mininova but I have used them a few times, and I think Synthmaster 2, Buttersynth, or Tera Pro (with the Waves Module IAP) would get you into similar sonic territory. Similar to the Mininova all 3 are capable of wavetable synthesis, loading up single-cycle digital waveforms or samples, have plenty of modulation routing options, and have arpeggiators and built-in fx which can be saved on a per-patch basis. Check out some youtube videos of presets for those 3 and see if they sound like what you are looking for.

Digital D1 has been superseded by King of Digital, and while it would cover the digital waveform sounds of the Mininova, it doesn't have the wavetables or modulation routing needed to get the more complex sounds the Mininova is capable of.

The vocoder is another nice feature of the Mininova, apparently Synthmaster 2 has one (I've never tried it), Buttersynth and Tera Pro do not. There are lots of other good vocoder focused AUv3's out there, so I wouldn't get hung up on trying to find one app that does everything the Mininova does.

Ultimately if you are looking for a tool for live performance the Mininova is going to be hard to beat, as the layout is tailored towards ease of use while still having a complex sound engine you can dive into and program if you like. BUT if you don't need to use it live and you want to do a lot of programming you will likely find that easier to do on one of the 3 apps I've mentioned.

Curious to see what other people think!

EDIT: Check out Bleass Megalit as well, it has many similar features to Mininova and the other 3 apps mentioned. Like Buttersynth it is fairly streamlined and easy to program, whereas Synthmaster 2 and Tera Pro are quite a bit more complex.

Novation Groovebox app has synths inside with sound character relatively close to mininiva/circuit synth engine .. of course they are much simpler, not that much modulation capabilities, but i would say that Novation(tm) sound is there.. They are designed like simper synth soecific for some particular type of sounds (basses, leads, pads) but what i hear out of them sound sto me very close to this uktraniva/mininiva/circuit synth engine..

In general, i would say just buy Mininova again and problem solved :-))) Why to not buy hardware if you can ?? 😂

    Hey great info man!
You are right its going to be hard to beat a mininovs for live performance, and honestly its not like its the worlds greatest synth or anything… i just have always loved the sound of it and the sound design menus make sense to me.
Synthmaster2 is probably a good one to get something similar, I’ll give that a go.. i have it and honestly have never really used it … you know us iOS addics 🤣
I haven’t messed with mega, but bleass makes great stuff so worth a shot anyway to support them!
    Thanks man

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with more hardware haha i just ordered the sonicware ambient ó and can’t wait for that!!!
I think novation is now focusrite at least the ios apps, but good call, Groovebox is def one that can get in the territory and is ultra easy to program… literally not much to it! But it’s a great sound and fun. I wish they would auv3 there synths and take them out of groovebox tho!

  • as an outside suggestion, look at Korg Electribe Wave https://www.korg.com/uk/products/software/korg_electribe_wave/

  • Original Novation Circuits can be bought for less than £100 and are effectively 2 x slightly simplified Mininovas.

They make really good MIDI controllers for iOS devices too and I love the Circuit sequencer.

Good point! Wasn't there some kind of editor available for the Circuit?

I know nothing about MiniNova. However, I read this thread and suddenly remembered Jacob Haq's haQ attaQ MiniNova Youtube video(s). (The only MiniNova video I’ve seen is that he sold it though.)
