Softly, I sleep / track #1000

edited July 24 in Creations

Just a solo piano/bass track as I reach my goal of 1000. Not with a bang but a damper.
Albums stand at 82. 18 more to reach my second goal. After that… who the f knows.
Pianoteq8, BeatHawk Total Bass.

  • Congratulations on 1000. I can’t imagine being as prolific, especially considering the quality of your music. Your improvisations on piano are amazing and I always enjoy them, even on days when enjoying anything is difficult.

  • Amazing achievement, LL!! You are an inspiration to all of us. A creative spirit in the truest sense. It’s a beautiful piece as well. 👏

1000! You slacker :) I like the stripped down purity of this. Makes me think of a Noir detective walking into an empty daytime nightclub, in pursuit of a lead, while the resident pianist works out on the bandstand. Forget it Jake. It’s Chinatown…

  • Utterly amazing work LinearLineman. Well done.

  • 1000! Wow, and this track proves what a master of jazz improv you are. Very listenable and well played! Congratulations!

  • Creating a 1,000 tracks ? I can sort of see myself getting there if nature allows..
Creating a 1,000 tracks of this quality and musicality ? Not a snowball’s chance in hell !
Well done Mike , the 100 albums are easy after this 😊

  • Congratulations! Awesome achievement. And your tracks are quality too, all the ones I’ve heard. You’re an inspiration.

  • This is a monumental success! 🤩 Omg, 1000 tracks! 🫣 I can’t even comprehend that much of the work. Congratulation! You are my hero!

  • I hope you realize that 1000 is significant because you have 10 fingers.
In Octal you could have reached your goal after 512 tracks.

If you need a stretch goal shoot for 1000 in HEX = 4,096 tracks.
How about some number of 100’s in HEX (it’s 256 each) You can reach 4 x 100 = 1024 in a couple months.

Do you paint or take photographs?

    I can hear no diminishments.

Let's see, (checks list) I've only got about 986 to go.

  • Nice one. I love the piano/bass duets. I think of Oscar Peterson and Niels Henning Orsted Pederson. Congratulations on hitting the 1K milestone! I’m up to 290 and hope to have another 10 years.

Sorry to hear about the arthritis. In addition to my hip, it’s starting in my right hand index finger. That could be a real problem if I was still doing competition shooting. I had to give it up in 2019. It was becoming painful… and dangerous. I was a member of The Oak Park Sportsman’s Club for a long time and really miss it. This is where I used to spend my weekends…

    Now I mostly just sit.

  • Thank you @MadeofWax @gusgranite (how’re you doing, buddy?) @Svetlovska @cyberheater @AlterEgo_UK @GeoTony @Dav @Luxthor @McD @MrStochastic @Paulieworld. Very glad you’re along for the ride.

As to the arthritis… I was diagnosed with RA a couple of years ago cause my hands were swollen. Hasn’t happened since, so my hands are okay. The rest of my body… another story but nothing terminal… yet.

I was only able to reach this goal because of what my teacher, Connie Crothers taught me without ever imagining would repurpose her lessons in improvisation. You know, my whippet, Bodhi can run at 35 mph. Otherwise he’s sleeping, wanting food or acting silly. I call that speed, which he can summon up at will, his super power.

And Connie gave me a super power to use when I’m not sleeping, looking for food, or acting silly. It is the ability to put my ego aside and play, for good or ill. IOS and this forum gave me the skills to turn that material into a different type of finished product, much as adding water to dessicated potatoes makes them edible and, sometimes, even palatable.

I know a lot of the folks who listen to my stuff think it’s best as straight piano music. But if I did only that I’d have been finished a long time ago. I need the water to go down the river of creation. Improvisation is just the boat I paddle, often effortlessly.

Well, that’s enough metaphors and similes for a 1000 tracks, I guess. If you have a yen to improvise, go for it. Try to understand the source and the way to it… which is feeling.

  • Regarding the ten finger piano technique, a story.

In music college we had a guest artist that was a baroque harpsichord virtuoso. She decided
that the thumbs played notes louder than the fingers. The historic harpsichord doesn’t use a hammers
to activate the strings, it actually plucks the strings and she could hear the heavier thumb pressure plucking harder probably just do to mass.

So, she developer the technique to play the baroque repertoire just using the 8 fingers. She tucked the thumbs under her hand and floated her fingers over the key. Harpsichord also doesn’t;t have any concept of the sustain so there’s no need to hold down a note. I’m sure I have some details incorrect but the 8 fingers I remember.

  • @LinearLineman doing good thanks! I must have nearly 1000 unfinished sketches by now… 😝

  • That's quite an achievement LL or may i say Mike for this one time  On to the next xxxx... Congratulations frenq!

  • A perfect example of the amazing improvisation skills of @LinearLineman! Congrats on the milestone!

  • What’s interesting to me is how the 1,000 improvisations do not repeat ideas. The variety of ideas is impressive.

  • Congrats on #1000. Soothing as usual.

  • A really beautiful one this, Mike, the playing, the changes... Remember the days when you were one of the very few people posting their music on this forum? Now it seems so many are sharing their music here. You've played a big role in making that change happen, I reckon. Here's to many more improvs!

Congrats my friend. You made it. I would suggest you upload your tracks to archive.org so they'll still be available after soundcloud.

  • Glad you’re doing well @gusgranite. Keep it up, bro. Thx @Frenq @Edward_Alexander @StudioES

Thx @McDbeing intimately familiar with my stuff I do see patterns, vocabulary, chord progressions etc. Maybe cause I’ m create in several genres. Ultimately, the cosmic source, serendipity, happy accidents and an odd musical POV accounts for most of the originality.

Thank you @Gavinski. I had never thought about the increase in creative posts in the past five years. I hope I encouraged folks to post more.

Thx @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr i archive on Bandcamp. Do you still recommend archive. Org?

  • Congratulations on this incredible milestone! And what great lyrical slice of playing to mark it with. 👏

  • Thank you very much @richardyot. Your own creative contributions (especially SOTMC) to this forum are very measurable and laudable.

  • 10,000 and you'll be enlightened.

  • @Danny_Mammy lol, I sure ain’t enlightened now.
I’m thinking of just giving in and buying it from Amazon when it goes on sale.

you might not be enlightened but maybe you are a special person who can manage to achieve part-time enlightenment as i call it.

I can reach this state, then usually a lady i like challenges me and i fall back into the depths.

Thank you @Klownshed. Goals can spur creativity. Still, I don’t know what else I have left to express after so many tracks. My orientation seems to have shifted from the pleasure of playing and creating… even if it’s repetitive… to the creation of a body of work that encompasses all I have to express.

If I feel I have already expressed it all, in the very best way I can, isn’t it reasonable to think there can be a point when there is no more. In other words, will there be a point when I have done it, literally, to death. That would be disappointing, because the fun would be over, but it would make sense that sometimes there is just an end to a creative endeavor.

The counter argument is that it could actually be a just loss of will to create more. I’ve experienced that before. I guess if I feel a longing to do it it won’t be over. We’ll see.

The music never runs out. :-)

  • @klownshed you’re right, of course, it never runs out. We just have to be open to the transmissions.
