MPC 3 for standalone announced

Hey, I'm not gonna say too much here. But wanted to get the word out that MPC 3 for standalone hardware is announced. I've listened to a few YouTube videos and it sounds like a very major revision. Finally we will have something like an arrangement timeline across tracks. Lots of UI changes. It will upset some old MPC users, but the platform is moving closer to a DAW.

And to be honest, my attraction to the platform has always been that it is in the ballpark of an integrated DAW experience that will leverage your muscle memory.

Thx, Joe

  • Looking forward to checking out the beta when it finally opens up. Haven’t touched my MPC One in a while

Biggest drawback for those jumping in early is that IIRC you can NOT take your project from MPC 3 standalone to the MPC 2 desktop software. I'm sure other types of exporting can work around it. MPC 3 for desktop won't be out in 2024.

  • I use an MPC Live II a lot, done quite a few international gigs with it. Great bit of kit and this update has pretty much all the features people have been begging for and more.

The top picks for me are:

1 Q-LINK MACROS! (anyone who has used BM3 can't go back on this)

2 REORDER FX! (crazy how it wasn't there before but nice to have now)

    3 REORDER TRACKS!!! (as above)

4 Arranger view (will be a great addition to the workflow)

5 Disk streaming (lots of people request this, clearly a great feature although I never personally had memory issues with the 2GBs provided)

  • I wish I had more Q Link knobs. I have a MPC Key 61 with 4 knobs. I know how to get around with just those 4 pretty well, but I covet all the knobs on the MPC X.

  • Not a biggie for me... but Audio tracks won't be segregated from MIDI tracks anymore. Apparently that really bugged a lot of people.

Of course, with the Arranger view, you need all tracks together.

  • I have two Mpc Live 2’s and I’m considering putting Mpc 3 on one of them…it’s a shame it won’t really work with Mpc 2 for desktop, but I’m guessing we can downgrade back to Mpc 2 if people want to?

  • Only issue from what I read , is the Mute function works as audio muting now
There is also bpm change automation :)
A simple feature (but great improvement) I liked was sampling straight to a pad .
Generally speaking Akai did amazing job . I sold my MPC One since they focused on paid plugins. But v3 was based on workflow improvement and a huge plus it's free .

Disk streaming is useful for people using their MPC for backing tracks , or using it as multitrack recorder etc ...

Yeah I figured that's the use case -- could be great for 'DJing' with the MPC. I mainly use it for sampling analogue synths into keygroups, drum banks and sequencing CV, so there's plenty of RAM there generally.

Yes also if you create a unique track on another system hardware or software, it can then play as a track side-by-side with an arrangement on the MPC.

I opted for the X for that reason but kind of wish i had gotten the live for the size. The added knobs definitely add to the stand alone instrument feel. With a linear mode this will get more future use in stand alone. It’s been a great audio interface/ controller also (plug and play into an ipad too).

  • Despite using MPCs since the late 90s I never really got on with the tracks/programs workflow. I always hated making songs on it, always just ended up with some loops.
For me, MPCs were always more or less only for making beats or coming up with ideas.

I think Akai is doing the right thing now for maybe slowly moving away from the „pure“ oldschool approach and changing things up a bit.

Also now having 8 sample layers per pad is great news for more realistic drum programming ( good morning, iOS developers 😉 ).

  • MPC 3 standalone on my MPC X SE is such a workflow improvement! Finally deleted BM3 and the iPad Pro and MPC X have united. I’m thinking of bringing in my mini freak for this set up and calling it a day! I can not commend AKAI enough for this update! This literally combines the Force and the MPC together bringing the best of both worlds. I have been on it all day and it’s really upped my opinion of working solely on MPC stand alone.

  • @MrSmileZ
So you on the beta already ?
Been learning the mpc work flow for a few months now, and enjoying it thoroughly
But open to the new mpc3
    Way of operating
And been doing for a few years
Are you happy Akai have moved on, anything you are missing from the old way w.g mpc2 ?

  • The arranger view, the main screen, the new mixer, the colours... feels like a hardware BM3.... AND I LOVE IT!!!

  • FYI, when I use my MPC, iOS comes in for MIDI guitar and for a number of synth sounds I wouldn't get otherwise. I use iRig Pro, and it's pretty bulletproof integration.

I do NOT use bluetooth. Too iffy!

    MACROS!!!! :D

Yea 3.0 is dope. I’m into it way more than 2.0. It’s an overall smoother experience. Even sampling workflow is hugely improved by it.

I use the iPad and the Minifreak with mine. The Minifreak provides keyboard layout and a vast variety of synthesis…while the iPad provides better stemming (Logic Pro) and effects, synths, and other instruments. Not to mention the creative external sequencing…. It’s a win for me

Here's something about composing in Grid view that always bugged me.

Let's say I want to put an E note in bar 1, beat 3. And I want ot put a C note in bar 2, beat 2. And let's say I've gotten pretty good at using the buttons on the MPC to move to those spots without using the touch screen - TUI. I want to press the E note on my keyboard and have it go in the Grid without having the playhead moving.

AFAIK, you can't do it in MPC 2.x hardware. And it's so close. They just need to give me a way to "Record" but not "play"

Can you do this in MPC 3.0 hardware?

As it is in MPC 2.x, there are times I'm on the Grid and then switch to List Editor to record that note without the playhead moving. The switch back to Grid since List Editor is so ugly. ;)

Not trying to get off-topic, but just see if new version makes this possible.

  • Dang, I killed the thread again :)

  • @joegrant413
    Ya ain’t killed it
I don’t know the answer sadly
And I guess folks that care about MpC3 are just sitting quietly waiting for the release
Only had my mpc1+ for a few months, so still learning, and now it’s the summer holidays my kids ain’t giving me a spare second to learn my new wonder box
