Any iOS DJ's out there?

Any of y'all using a hardware DJ controller with your iPad or iPhone?

I'm a huge fan of Djay Pro (one of the best iOS apps imo especially with the stem separation) and while the touch controls are nice, nothing beats physical controls so thinking about picking up a Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 to pair with it.

Just wondering if anyone has experience with a similar setup or iOS DJ experience in general.

  • @bluegroove I use iOS djay pro with the Rev1 & sometimes my ddj400 controller .My friend has FLX 4 and runs smooth. I average 4 gigs / week. Runs smooth. Make sure to use the Apple Certified CCK USB adapter to connect controller to ipad .

  • Havent really bothered but would probably use djplayer pro with an ec4.

    It would go.

Phone to a headache sound omni for dvs samples for scratching.

An ipad with 4 decks and and ec4 as a mixer.

Both output to a main ipad.

Where a blueboard can trigger effects ( delay ) for scratching plus mute master beats.

Master fx on tracks from the 4 deck ipad ( auv3 fx )

Still have 2 ipads that are usually for music production for synths etc.

I rekon I could also just mix my own beats but when filtered out the previous synths.

Load host templates of the next tracks synths. Perhaps without audiable spikes because you arnt loading drums.

  • For the last 8 years I was using Traktor DJ with Traktor Z1, great little combo though I’m not sure how much longer NI will support iOS apps.

  • Thanks for chiming in everyone! Glad to see so many DJs here.

  • I have a Traktor S3 and it works great with Djay Pro (and Traktor DJ of course, but that’s basically abandonware). That said I’m usually running Traktor Pro on a Mac. The stems sound a lot better than Djay Pro or Rekordbox.

    .

  • I recently tested / used djay pro on my iPad in my studio Denon Prime 4 just to test out the Apple Music streaming functionality. I was pretty impressed.

  • I use DDJ FLX 4 with DJ pro on iPad without issue. It also syncs nicely with ableton link to other apps I use on the iPad simultaneously in live performances.

Oho snap. I think I get it now. There are DJ controllers, but what you and some of the others have is a controller plus interface.
So your phone direct to FLX4 with the CCK USB and FLX4 channel 1 and or channel 2 shows up as an output for Djay Pro, or whatever other Ableton synced device such as Drambo? Or am I mistaken?

Re Djay Pro users, I guess nobody here is looping their song segments, not counting using the different Cue points.

If you mean looping in DJ pro, I do that here and there during live performance. I also bring in other apps like Drambo for live looping iPad and hardware synths as I’m DJing. Ableton link works great synchronizing everything together.

You don’t have to setup MIDI channels for the DJ controller. DJ Pro automatically recognizes and connects to it. You just have to make sure Ableton link is enabled in DJ Pro so that it syncs with Drambo or whatever else.

This is my setup that I shared in another thread a while ago. And the setup is fun as hell to play!

And a smaller setup without a DJ deck I use at some shows.

That is such a lovely setup!

Has anyone ever used a Reloop controller? I'm now considering the Reloop Buddy over the FLX4 since the Reloop has dedicated stem controls for Djay Pro, plus those FX paddles look dope, as well as the RGB pads, and I like the smaller size since I'm going to be moving it around a lot between my studio, patio, etc., and the iPad holding slot is also a nice touch:

    1) Are you looping via punching the cue point live–which I do find intuitive, or using the actual loop pads by recording and prepping in advance or while monitoring in headphone cue while another song is playing?
I ask because, as you’re probably aware, Djay Pro doesn’t allow you to record streaming content. If you are using the pads, I’m guessing your music collection is on a drive?

    2) Sorry, let me better clarify my original question. I was referring to audio channels,
not midi. Is the USB cable for MIDI only, or is it also audio over USB, like an audio interface?

    This is my setup

Looks beautiful, and I have watched/listened to one or two sessions in the past 👍

    Thank you @Blipsford_Baubie.

I do loops on the DJ deck in both ways. Depends on what I’m trying to do. But the main “live looping” happens in Drambo that sends midi to hardware or native or AU synths in Drambo.

I use the sp404 as the main audio interface. I have a powered usb hub which connects all devices to the iPad including the sp404 and the DJ controller.

Here’s the trick. With this setup both the SP404 and the DJ controller become audio interfaces. Because iPads can only handle a single audio interface the audio interface device that’s plugged into the USB hub last takes precedence and becomes the solo audio interface. In DJ Pro you can choose to send the audio to the audio interface connected to the iPad instead of it coming out of the RCA output of the DJ controller.

So no need to use the RCA outs of the DJ controller. All you need is the USB-C cable coming out of it and into the USB hub. DJ Pro is controlled by the DJ controller but the audio goes to the SP404 through the iPad. All DJ effects in DJ Pro can still be controlled through the DJ controller. And you can still use the headphone output of the DJ controller when you’re DJing. Another benefit of this setup is I get 2 sets of end of chain effects. The DJ Pro effects as well as the SP404 effects. Throw in any type of native Drambo or AU effects in Drambo and you essentially beat the most sophisticated studios.

It took me a while to end up with this setup and I can say it’s a joy now. Hooking things up together is half the fun of making music for me. Endless possibilities.

Edit: Forgot to mention. Instead of using loops in DJ pro I mostly use Ampify’s launchpad app. Much larger selection of curated loops and you can bring in your own loops into it as well. I have the Launchpad pro hooked up in this setup for controlling the Ampify launchpad app.

I bet it took a while!! It seems for me hooking things up, whether virtually or physically, is the only fun since I don’t do much with it 😂.

    Appreciate your detailed explanation.
I no longer have gear except for small studio monitors and a powered USB hub (not C).
My iOS device is still lightening but I’m ready to upgrade. Are the USB-C Apple devices capable of powering the FLX 4 without a powered hub?

  • Glad to help @Blipsford_Baubie.

I have an 5th gen 2021 M1 iPad and it can power the FLX 4 without issue. But I haven't really used it this way for an extended period of time.

Just like yours, my powered USB hub is a regular USB hub, not USB-C. I just use USB to USB-C cables to hook up devices with USB-C to it, including the iPad.

Oh wow, that’s great to know. I’ve been under the impression that I’d need to get a newer USB hub. Good to know!

How does the DJ controller show up as an audio output? For example in Drambo, do you have the option to send it to deck 1 or deck 2 of the FLX 4?

The FLX 4 audio interface shows like any other stereo interface. You’re just sending the iPad digital audio through FLX 4 through its effects chains and not to a particular deck. (Edit: You have to run Djay Pro along with your other iPad music apps if you want to use DJay Pro’s effects). Essentially even if you didn’t want to use DJ Pro and DJ, you can use FLX 4 as just an audio interface without the DJ app effects. The decks and their audio are controlled by Djay Pro (or whatever other DJ app like Rekordbox). This is what it looks like in AUM:

  • Late to the discussion but I use an old Pioneer DDJ WeGo straight into my iPad/phone via CCK running CrossDJ or DJay and works great

Ok I forget, it’s been a while. Haven’t had an audio interface since my laptop years. I currently go iphone wirelessly to studio monitors (indirectly) while using DJay Pro, albeit with latency, but it’s ok cause I’m not involved. I’m using AI mixing. Only, it’s not ok cause my soul hurts. It’s just that it comes in real handy when a certain family member, unbeknownst to me, volunteers me to DJ a house party the day before the party.

I remember the details now. It took a couple days. On laptop I use to freely route Ableton channels to DJ decks, but it wasn’t an ITB thing. Ableton tracks were assigned to different stereo outputs of my Motu, which went into a Denon 4 channel DJ mixer. What was even cooler yet, the Denon had its own electro-mechanical routing matrix for its decks. That bit was simply a bonus, not at all required for what I want again. I just thought it’d be tits to have multi buses over USB, but I guess we’re not there yet. Currently, your summing your multiple apps in the dark before it leaves the iPad, I don’t trust my mixing enough to do that. Again, I appreciate your knowledge and confirming that things would not work like I thought.
I am now well informed and know that purchase would not be for me. I appreciate you.

  • I get what you mean by mixing them in the dark before sending out through USB but I mix everything on the iPad anyway so it works for me. Frankly the quality of the mix is better compared to my crappy hardware mixer. Hence why I mix everything in iPad and use SP404 as the audio interface.

I do have another setup where I use my MPC Live 2 with the FLX 4. It would be ideal if I had a standalone DJ deck because I still need the iPad to run DJ Pro and control the FLX 4. The ideal for live performance (for me) would be MPC Live 2, a standalone DJ deck like Pioneer RX3, and a midi keyboard hooked up to the MPC. No iPad, rock solid, great mixing and instruments in MPC Live 2 and great sound quality all around. I think I’ll end up buying a used RX3 at some point as it’s a new manifestation of my GAS problem. 🙂

Despite the subscription model, Djay Pro has remained consistent. And it’s insane the number of controllers it works on.

Here’s a buddy of mine on the streets of Toronto ripping it off with just his iPad

You can use it with controllers as well. I’ve even tested it with MIDI keyboards, and grid controllers

    Hope this helps.

Edit: Can’t forget about Remix Live. The app is great, for different reasons, but great.

  • I was using Djay Pro before it went to a sub. One of the few subs I’d consider but can’t really justify it for now. It was great when I was using it a few years back, probably even better, with everything they’ve added since.
