Mela 5.6 Update – Ring Mod and Reverb Modules

Hey all, just letting you all know about the Mela 5.6 update. All Module Collections are 30% off until August 5. As always, feel free to ask follow-up questions.

Mela 5.6 is another great update. Let's start with the Ring Mod module. Inspired by analog ring modulator circuits, the module produces richer harmonic sound than pure digital ring modulation. The module's input acts as a modulator to the sinusoid carrier whose frequency is a controllable parameter. The other parameter is Character, which adjusts the tonal quality of the ring modulation. Ring Mod is part of Collection 3.

Next, a Reverb module is one of the most requested features and it's finally here. The high-quality algorithmic reverb module features standard controls such as room size, decay amount, predelay, and mix. It offers independent controls for early reflections and diffusion levels. The reverb includes a high shelf filter in the feedback path to control high-frequency damping. The module's feature set will evolve in the lab. Early feedback is encouraged to help shape its future development.

Finally, the Note Pad module has been moved from Collection 3 to Collection 0, unlocking it for all users. This ensures that even if you don't own all modules, the preset notes written by the preset artist are always readable.

Mela 5.6 Changelog

Reverb Module:

  • Introducing a high-quality algorithmic reverb module.
  • Features standard controls such as room size, decay amount, predelay, and mix.
  • Offers independent controls for early reflections and diffusion levels.
  • Includes a high shelf filter in the feedback path to control high-frequency damping.
  • The module's feature set will evolve in the lab.
  • Early feedback is encouraged to help shape its future development.
  • Reverb is a Mela Lab module and part of Collection 3.

Ring Mod Module:

  • Inspired by analog ring modulator circuits.
  • Produces richer harmonic sound compared to pure digital ring modulation.
  • The module's input acts as a modulator to the sinusoid carrier.
  • The carrier frequency ranges from 8Hz to 8192Hz, spanning exactly 10 octaves.
  • Using the MIDI Source module, it's easy to make the carrier frequency follow MIDI notes.
  • The Character parameter adjusts the tonal quality of the ring modulation.
  • Lower values tend to create a mellower, smoother sound, whereas higher values produce a harsher, more intense sound.
  • The "Ring Bass" and "Ring Follower" presets showcase the module in action.
  • Reminder: for pure digital ring modulation, use the VA Oscillator module's built-in ring modulation feature.
  • Ring Mod is part of Collection 3.

Other Changes:

  • Moved the Note Pad module from Collection 3 to Collection 0, unlocking it for all users.
  • Graduated the Noise Gate module from the Mela Lab, it's now under the Audio Processors category.
  • Slightly tweaked the All Pass module layout.
  • EQ Band layout is now more compact and similar to All Pass.
  • Fixed EQ Band's High Shelf cut not processing audio correctly.
  • Improved EQ Band module's DSP algorithms.
  • Fixed the Digital Delay module not initialising correctly.
  • Digital Delay will no longer build up feedback from the noise floor.
  • Stereo Delay no longer causes a crash when one of the delay times is set to 0 seconds.
  • Fixed the max peak value label alignment in the Meter module that the 5.4 update broke.
  • Fixed the Preset Browser sometimes not preselecting the last used preset group on Mela plug-in instantiation.
  • EQ Band Gain parameter now offers "Set to" menu items with values -6dB, -3dB, +3dB, and +6dB.
  • Oscillator Phase parameters now offer "Set to" menu items with values 90º and 180º.
  • Fixed the Compressor and Gate parameters not being smoothed.
  • Updated some presets and added new ones.

GarageBand for iOS Compatibility:

  • The Mela 5.5 update introduced side-chain audio input when loaded as an instrument plug-in.
  • This change broke compatibility with GarageBand for iOS, where Mela wouldn't produce any sound when instantiated as an instrument plug-in.
  • This update reverts that change to restore compatibility.
  • Side-chain support for the instrument mode will be added back once the issue is fully investigated and addressed.
  • In the meantime, you can still use a side-chain with synth presets by loading Mela as an effect.
  • For example, in Logic Pro, select and load Mela from the MIDI-controlled Effects menu.

Grab Mela from the App Store.

Cool updates. Perhaps you could remind people of what exactly are in the IAP collections (I know they are packed with features) so they can make informed decisions on those? Thanks.

    Isn't there already a list?

  • ^ Yes, but it's not shown in the App Store, so a person doesn't know what they're getting until they "buy" the free app. It's really the fault of the App Store, which does not allow sufficient detail about in-app purchases.

Amp Envelope, Arpeggiator, LFO, Meter, Note Pad, Relative Pitch, Stereo Delay, Transposer, VA Filter, VA Oscillator, Volume.

    Collection 1:
Balance, Chord, Chorus, Control Change, Compressor, Distortion, DS Oscillator, Envelope Generator, Envelope Follower, Flanger, Glide, Level, MIDI Logger, MIDI Source, Mono, Noise Oscillator, Note Echo, Note Length, Note Range, Panic, Phaser, Pitch Bend, Random, Scale, Strummer, Velocity.

    Collection 2:
Clipper, Comb Filter, DC Blocker, Degrader, EQ Band, Fixed Pitch, FM Operator, Macro, MIDI Capture, MIDI Channel, Oscilloscope, Pitch Ratio, Rectifier, Vibrato, Voice Activity, VPS Oscillator.

    Collection 3:
All Pass, Audio-to-Mod, Digital Delay, Dual Pan, Macro Button, Mid-Side, Multiply-Add, Noise Gate, Note Event, Phase Inverter, Reverb, Ring Mod, Simple LFO, Stereo Pan.

  • ^ Thanks @Nikolozi. I was really thinking it would be more helpful for others since I already have the app. 👍

It is all there in the Appstore Description though

  • Excellent, congrats!

Was really more of a reference to this part of the App Store, where it would be nice to have a more detailed description as a pop-up or something:

  • @Nikolozi (or anyone who knows): is there a specific reason effects have to be added only to audio lanes? Is it because they’re not polyphonic?

Yeah, that would be a great future.

@Nikolozi (or anyone who knows): is there a specific reason effects have to be added only to audio lanes? Is it because they’re not polyphonic?

That's correct. The modules that aren't likely to be used to process synth voice are audio only. For example, it's unlikely you would want a chorus effect on every voice. For "Poly 8", that's like 8 instances and it's unlikely to be useful on an instrument lane. But there are many effects / audio-processors (like Clipper, Comb Filter, Distortion) that are useful for synth voice design. To support polyphony it complicates the module internally as well as the user might accidentally use it on an instrument lane and end up wasting a lot of CPU, when using it on an audio lane to do synth post-processing would have sufficed.

Having said that, if there are specific modules that you think might be useful for instrument lanes, let me know and I'll look into it. Example use cases would be helpful also.

Thanks! This is all very clear. Knowing how it works is enough for my use cases. Maybe, for improving discoverability, you could allow these modules to be added to instrument lanes, and they would just happen to collapse the voices down to one. I can see how this could make things harder to understand though.

I've thought about adding the ability for modules to collapse down voices to a stereo mix, but as you said it would make this a bit confusing without a major gain. But this is an active area of investigation for me. One of Mela's main goals is to make modular synthesis as approachable as possible and UI as simple as possible so that the users can intuitively understand how to use it without reading long manuals. For example, I would love to get rid of lane types, so that there would be only one type of lane and depending on how modules are sequenced it will automatically do the right thing. But I haven't been able to come up with a good solution yet that doesn't sacrifice UX.

  • Hi @Nikolozi ! Should we expect any “Black Friday” sale? I’m really impressed with the synth: UI works well on iPhone which is not an given, and the modular structure is quite intuitive.

It’s great to hear you find Mela intuitive.

Yes, I do plan to do a Black Friday sale. It seems Black Friday sales start earlier and earlier each year. So I might as well join the others :)

It’s late here, I’ll do it in the morning.
