New Giorgio Sancristoforo instrument - Creature From the ID
Mac only at the moment, but another interesting one from Giorgio...

That's like something you'd expect to see from AudioThing/Hainbach. Strange, but I'll bet it gets its share of fans.
Anything this guy makes is super original and off the beaten path. Sounds good.
I installed one on my steamdeck the other day, almost the perfect platform for them…
It's a Krell machine - or at least references the movie Forbidden Planet. Full of the types of sounds that ICONIC movie had. I believe "creature from the ID" is even a quote from the movie
To be specific, “Monsters, John. Monsters from the Id.”
I wish this guy would do iOS apps. I love his stuff.
He doesn't even do desktop plugin versions of his apps so I don't think ios versions are high on his agenda...🙁 Still, I'm definitely always interested in anything he creates.
I'm watching Forbidden Planet right now. This machine gets pretty close.
I can believe that! Apart from the screen, I run them on a ThinkPad yoga with a 11 inch screen and they hardly fit. The touch screen is good though.
It's weird he has a huge distain for the "touch screen paradigm" but his apps work really well as touch screen instruments!
It's good to know this can be done, but then I again I'd have to buy another computer to do it.
What does he hate about touch screens exactly?
I dunno, he’s a very opinionated Italian intellectual, I know for iOS he hates the closed source aspect of it… I saw someone ask him on his Facebook a few years ago and he was just very forthright in saying he doesn’t like iOS and touch. Luckily he makes his stuff in max so I guess the touch screen stuff is built in?
Maybe one day cycling 74 will bring max to iOS and everything will be resolved?
I can understand not liking closed source. And if he was only into hardware I might understand that he prefers twiddling real knobs. But for someone making software to somehow think that a mouse experience is superior to a touch experience? That's hard for me to fathom. I doubt he can really think that, so I wonder if there is some misinterpretation going on somewhere. iOS is clearly superior to using a laptop or tablet in terms of the potentials for interaction, if not (always) in terms of things like screen size, device power. It also had advantages and disadvantages vid a vis hardware. So I would really like to learn more about why he doesn't like touch 🤷♂️
Yeah it’s definitely weird to not like touch, though it’s definitely not better in some ways; I always remember the Steve Jobs thing about if you’re using a stylus you’ve failed being utterlyridiculous (my first thought was, I’m not a frickin caveman, give me a pen of some sort when I’m going to draw something😂)
I didn’t think windows or OS X are entirely open source either, and many of his devices didn’t have Linux versions, he’s probably masking unwillingness to learn tbf, and then some people have visceral feelings about iPlatforms, but they tend to also not bear Mac in the first place.
I’s confused by this fella tbh🥴
Good point about the pen lol. This guy makes interesting apps, but they would clearly be better as plugins than standalone, as they currently are, and some, at least, look like they would be very well suited to using on an iPad. Multitouch is a better experience, more suited to music making, than a mouse, any day. I don't think anyone could dispute the truth of that, could they? You could also be right about the 'dislike' being an excuse for not wanting to learn to code AUv3. Learning to code AUv3 sounds like a right pain in the balls, so I wouldn't blame him if that's the case haha.
Although (blasphemy warning) I do think these would be more suitable standalone/IAA than AU with their interfaces😅
Hey, he can redo the UIs entirely. We need that good ol' phone compatibility too while he's at it 😂 😎
I guess I mean that they’re so clearly fully realised as standalone things I wouldn’t want them floating in a window… but yeah, unless they’re fully usable on the watch too, don’t waste my time 😂
And hey, they better not be more than $5 a pop or else 🤪
Indeed, how could we be expected to pay the same for a superior experience? 😅😂🥴
I can relate to his view absolutely
I like touch of course but it is not the best of anything. It's only the best compromise for convenience sake. If you want precision you don't choose a touch screen.
Also in 2024 iOS is still a disaster for file management or doing anything productive compared to a full OS.
But it's still great to have as a studio tool as long as you have the alternatives as well when needed, in most use cases.
Lack of precision also annoys me, but seems that is often down to poor knob implementation by devs. Is a mouse really much more precise tho?
Absolutely, much more precise, much faster and less tiring for the hands over long sessions. But it will be interesting to see if eye tracking technology makes a difference to apps, but then you still want to touch physical hardware as well rather than a screen when you need to get things done quickly. IOS is good as all round convenience OS, but most creative work needs a full OS not a mobile focussed one.
Especially if you use a big screen or multiple screens etc, a bigger display means being more productive and then touch becomes even less useful and slower once you get past a certain screen size.
But I like using iPads of course, they are great for coming up with ideas and being out of "work mode"
