Using Drum Machines in a DAW

Hey Team, this may sound like a dumb question but I'm wondering how you all work with drum machines inside a DAW. I'm principally using Cubasis as my DAW and drum machines such as DrumComputer and Playbeat amongst others. I guess my main question is around pattern sequencing. Do you render patterns to midi and sequence them into the DAW or do you use song modes in the drum machine. My approach to making music is generally pretty guerilla so I do the former but I am guessing the latter provides easier editing of patterns. I also have no real idea as to how to switch patterns in drum machines without a song mode.

Anyway, any tips from you good folk will be heartily greeted! TIA.

  • I always sequence them from the DAW. I want to be able to see every hit in the arrange window and be able to easily arrange/re-arrnage my regions sounding the internal sequencer doesn’t work for me.

The only exception is when I’m using a drum machine stand alone, hardware or software, in which case I jam until I have something I like then bounce out the midi and/or audio.

  • My drum machine

This is all iv done music wise since 2019.

Just stand there going um, ah.

    Then sit down

    ( A snyde neck disorder )

    Nice though

    The look of screens etc

Actually listened to Klowns song and Iv got far to go, with any composition.

I did actually burn a bird sample to Koala.

Then were going to start recording midi. Of a pianoteq e piano.

Thanks for sharing @klownshed . Yes, working within the same paradigm all your other tracks are in makes sense. I do like the shortcuts and drum specific features of some drum machines so making patterns in them as starting points and then rendering to midi for arranging and editing in the saw seems like the best way to go.
