The August Free App Challenge - Garageband

SO, in the spirit of continuing these little free app challenges, I challenge you folks out there to use Garageband to create a track from start to finish. Here are the guidelines...

  1. Regarding AUv3s, you may only use free AUv3 plugins. So, if you want to use Monolit, that's legit. If you want to use Blindfold EQ, that's also legit. But you can't, say, use Doctor Vibe (wah 😭 lol) or Drambo or anything you had to pay money to use.

  2. Regarding audio samples - no external audio samples are allowed. Only use that which comes within Garageband already. GB comes with plenty of drums within.

  3. Regarding finishing up a project in Logic - don't do that, lol. If you want to master in Logic, render the audio from Garageband itself first. You can master the rendered audio from Garageband in any host and with any plugins you wish to use. (I'll be using Multitrack DAW with Grand Finale and Youlean's Loudness Meter.)

  4. Regarding where to upload - so long as it's free to stream, you can upload your finished project anywhere, whether that's on SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Dropbox, Youtube, etc.

  5. Regarding screenshots - provide a couple of screenshots to show us how you work in GB. Note, if you plan to upload to Youtube instead and show off your workflow that way, you're exempt from uploading a couple screenshots.

There's a soft deadline of 19 Aug 2024. Most importantly, enjoy yourself. I can't wait to hear your uploads. :)

  • Definitely will be doing something…although no auv3s make me a sad sad panda 😂

  • Great idea Jim - everyone has access to this one, so shouldn’t even have setup time.

No paid AUv3s. ;) I said free AUv3s are allowed, like Blindfold EQ, Flux Mini 2, Roast Beef, Monolit, etc.

Exactly mate. :) Garageband should be simple enough to pick up. Has its own unique workflow, but once you understand it, sky's the limit really.

I forgot to mention you can use Live Loops to build a track, or build a track the "traditional" way, or a combination therein. You can program the MIDI notes, or play them in live. No matter what style, there's a way for everyone to try out GB.

  • Having been away from music and forum for a while (was made redundant a few months ago...its tough... still looking for another job) and having just completed a complicated piece, I yearn for a simpler times, so will give this a go.

Gonna use one free auv3 synth, only free effects, and will remake a classic.

Its been ages since I've done anything with GB, so a little concerned that my wistful dreams of 'simpler times' could turn sour given the auto-normalisation and lack of control I remember. Time for some Pete Johns videos again!
