When inspiration strikes

I was walking into town this last Saturday morning and a busker was playing “Caledonia” by Dougie Maclean. It’s a beautiful song and some here in Scotland think of it as an unofficial national anthem.

Anyway those fleeting moments as I walked by the guy singing inspired me to write something new in that same 6/8 feel. I got to my favourite coffee shop and wrote the lyrics in the next 15 minutes. Got home, the music also kind of wrote itself quickly and two days later the song is finished - I never work this fast, but boy it’s great when inspiration strikes, what an adrenaline rush it’s been.

I won’t get 13 million streams like Dougie’s song, but I’m really happy with the way it turned out. If you take a listen, I thank you.

Took a roundabout way to finally find you
The endless meandering and bumps in the road
But oh when I did, I finally discovered
What being in love means and what it’s like to strike gold

No flash in the pan, no two year wonder
The decades stretch on, we’re not news anymore
Still I reach for your hand as the TV drones on
Unhearing, not watching I’m lost in the glow

When I say you’re beautiful you think I’m blinded by love
Well I know it’s not true, if you stood in my shoes
You would see the love that I feel everyday

When the demons creep in, when worry takes over
When my complex mind it seems to explode
You restore the peace, my strength and my rock
You say everything’s OK and I know that it’s true

My choice of long words, the world’s worst romantic
You forgive the sceptic, poor excuses, the cynic
But my heart is so true and I’ll do right by you
We still fall about laughing we can flourish and thrive

And here’s the wonderful Caledonia…

  • I didn’t even listen to the original. This is the version I will remember. The lyrics really hit home. We’re both old and gray, but I love her more now than 25 years ago. When we go to bed, we wish each other a good nights sleep. I showed her the lyrics and she said… those are nice honey, what would you like for dinner tonight? We’re having Chicken Fettuccine. That’s real love, bro. Have a peaceful, loving night.

  • My knowledge of Scottish music didn't extend much beyond the Proclaimers before today.
Both wonderful songs and I love the lyrics too.

p.s misprint in the lyrics above: not watching I’m lost in your glow
Just wanted to prove I was paying close attention :-)

Thanks for posting, mate. We can always use another love song. Sure hope someone special is the recipient of your inspired tune. If not, well, you’ve given it to all of us. So, thx again!

@Paulieworld your love story is remarkable. But you already know that.

Congrats man, you really created a good one. You captured the feel of this type of music to the fullest extent and the harmonies are sometimes almost “Erasureish”. The lyrics fits the song perfectly as well. The production leaves nothing to be desired IMO.

    Very well done!👍👏👏👏

We are lucky men. We have both lost a lot and managed to survive.
You're right, we can always use another love song. Maybe I'll try that some day.
    Peace. (and I mean that!)

  • @Paulieworld @belldu @LinearLineman @DMfan Thank you all. It’s very much a song written to my wife, a ‘mature’ love song if you will, about two people who have known each other a long time. I’m extremely lucky and I know it. I’ve written many songs over the years, but I think this is one of my favourites, and will remain proud of.

  • What a beautiful piece @BillS! Great arrangement, so authentic and relatable. <3

  • Terrific stuff.

  • Indeed a beautiful song, enjoyed it very much, frenq

  • @reezygle @deadpoetlive @Frenq Thank you all for taking the time to listen.

As a veteran who’s written scores of songs over the years, occasionally (very occasionally) I’ll write one that seems to standout. A few weeks on from when I wrote “When I Say Your Beautiful” I think this one is in that category. I’m proud of it.

  • Only 12, 999, 976 listens to go 😊
Lovely track Bill, the little sections of acoustic guitar were ace.
You’re right to be proud of it !
