Mutually exclusive - or not? šŸ‘€

edited August 11 in Loopy Pro

In my Loopy project I have three groups: verse, chorus and bridge. They are all mutually exclusive. But they donā€™t behave as mutually exclusive. Let me explainā€¦

Iā€™m using a Bluetooth pedal to nudge the value of a stepped dial to select verse, chorus and bridge. When it gets to the end, the stepped dial wrap around to the verse again.

So far so good šŸ˜© butā€¦

For example: If I play the verse, and trigger the stepped dial twice - to jump over the chorus and play the bridge instead, the Loopy Pro start the Chorus AND the Bridge.

This also happens if I donā€™t use the stepped dial, but tap two groups after each other (before the second last start playing): TWO groups will then start playing at the same time (example verse and chorus).

Shouldnā€™t only the LAST selected group start to play? šŸ‘€
Any suggestions on what Iā€™m doing wrong?

It sounds like you might be queuing up two groups at once. Is that the situation?

The panel you show seems to indicate that group is mutually exclusive with one group. And it only shows there being one other group. If there are 3 groups, both outer groups should appear as in this panel

  • @OlaRos : i had a chance to check it out, It looks like if your trigger a play group while another has been queued and is counting in that they both will play. This is a bit of an edge case. I'll let michael know.

I'd recommend using a method to switch directly to the step you want rather than stepping through the steps. In the big update that is coming, it will be possible to step through a dial without triggering the steps.

There is a way to accomplish the same thing. Have a pair of steps for each action block, One step is empty and has the name of the step. The second step of the pair has the actio. Let's say

    step: verse - no action
step: verse - play verse group and any other actions, nudge -1 to return to empty step
    step: chorus
step: chorus action - the actions for the chorus, nudge -1 to return to empty ste
    step: bridge
    step: bridge action ....

navigate between the empty steps by nudging the dial 2. trigger the current step by nudging one.

That is exactly what is happening!

But it is important to mention that this does NOT only happen with Stepper Deal: - If, for example, I (by mistake) press directly on the Bridge group with my finger, the Bridge group is naturally put in the queue. BUT it is NOT "deleted" in the queue when I quickly correct my mis-press by pressing - for example, the Chorus group.
BOTH groups are activated in the queue - something I thought I should prevent with MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE.

Correctly! But my screenshot was taken from my phone (with only one group) - not from the project on the iPad. Sorry.

    Correctly!ā€¦
But I donā€™t think this is ā€œan edge caseā€. In a live situation you may make a wrong group-selection, and have to correct it - before the previous (wrong) choice is executed.
Well - thatā€™s how I thought Mutually Exclusive function was doing šŸ‘€

In the big update that is coming, it will be possible to step through a dial without triggering the steps.

Nice šŸ‘Œ Thanks for all the good work with this amazing app!

    Thanks! - I will try this @espiegel123

A short demonstration of my Mutually Exclusive issueā€¦.

  • @OlaRos : I understand what the issue is. the issue. I gave you some ideas you can use to work around the issue at the moment. Iā€™ve brought the issue to Michaelā€™s attention.

  • @OlaRos : the Cancel Count Ins/Outs action might be of use. you might try adding it as an action in your dial steps.
