Boards of Canada
Lately I’ve been trying to make some BOC type sounds with my OP-1 field. I like how this came out but I need some feedback.
Maybe too melancholy sounding? They have more of a darker feel I suppose.
All the synths in this clip are from the Op-1 field. I just layered them and turned them into samples.

Calling on @yellow_eyez . He may be able to help.
I like this clip a lot and it sounds pretty spot on for boc but I’m no expert. Good work
The vibe, the tone, the chords etc all sound very Boards of Canada, but the wow and flutter sounds too fast and too regular to me, also maybe too deep. I think with Boards, that would be slower and have a bit more variation in speed and depth. I feel like there would maybe be another instrument on top of this too, some kind of complex lead really cutting through things.
Good call. After I recorded it on to tape I felt the same way about the wow and flutter sounds. I wish the the op-1 had more modulation as opposed to just one lfo.
BOC leads are so difficult to copy, it’s almost like they have notes that I’ve never heard before. Haha I think it’s the way they have all their synths tuned differently.
Thanks for the reply.
Thx for listening.
Yes, their leads rock! Also their drums seem probably really hard to do well. The synth sounds are great, though I think it's not too hard to get in that ballpark, but the drums sound like they would take time and skills that I'm not sure I personally would want to invest, as I get bored of spending too much time on tiny details. Good to hear about the lack of lfos on the OP1F. They're beautiful objects and I find myself wanting one from time to time, but that's the kind of detail that would bug me, so makes me want one less, hehe.
Thx for the tag in lol
did you get the synthdawg manual?
I find the single LFO does all you could want, there are so many to choose from and you can set them at almost infinite possibilities
I mean I would love to help but you really have to select a tool and experiment with it in order to get a good grasp on how to pull the sounds you want out of it
What have you tried so far ?
Actually the op-1 field is the only piece of gear I know inside and out. I’m actually going to start making some tutorial videos on it soon.
I love that it has some constraints cause it makes you more creative. For me having another lfo for the master effect would be amazing.
The iPad and the Op-1 field are a match made in heaven.
Well I have the tax-6 as well so those three for me are the perfect system.
My original question was about Boards of Canada synth sounds but the last couple days have been practicing more and I think I’ve got it.
My only wish besides an LFO for the master would be some sort of granular effect like mutable instruments, clouds for the OP
Actually speaking of tutorials I did one with my Make Noise Shared System a while back if anyone is into Eurorack stuff.
Unfortunately, I lost the password for that account so I had to start a new YouTube channel.
I saw some video once on how they got their drums and the guy came really close. They layered some old drums breaks with drum machines and recorded them onto tape.
I’ll try to find the video and post it here. It was a pretty cool process.
Found it.
The drum bit comes in about 14 minutes if anyone is interested
Oh sweet, thnx
