For those into sunvox, the Pixitrackers are awesome to sketch something and send them to Sunvox and further work on them there

I've got a bunch of unfinished stuff in VividTracker.
It's close to the Amiga Protracker series I remember from my teenage years and definitely the most 'authentic' vintage tracker out there on iOS. It can handle .MOD files (4 track), but not the later 'ScreamTracker' or other variants.
It can save in proprietary 8 track format too.

There's then an app called '4Champ' that can access a huge online library (for free) of just about every tracker piece written in the 90s, so plenty of inspiration available for those that want some nostalgia.

ChatGPT told me to try Beepbox to KISS.

VividTracker? Proprietary 8 track format? Now my interest is piqued. :)

    I'll check 4Champ also.

What an interesting browser app. :) I'll definitely give that a shot.

  • The beepbox web app seems to size up well on my iPhone screen, too.

  • Last thing I’ll mention about beepbox. The URL itself saves a song.

    You find popular songs here…

    https://twitter-archive.beepbox.co/

  • Yep, to get the 8 tracks hit the '4' thats annotated in my screenshot, then pick 5-8

One day I'll finish what I was doing. I like the old tracker music, and there are tons of 'vintage samples' that can be used with it.

Nice! Thanks for the tip. :)

Starshine - PM by Purple Motion
    Satellite One by Purple Motion
    ShadowRun by Purple Motion
    Stardust memories by Jester
    Elysium by Jester
    Dead lock by Elwood
    Point of Departure by Necros

    Thank me later :-)

And if you haven't heard the opening theme to Turrican II on Amiga, give it a listen.
I used to load it just for the intro music and not even play the game!

  • If we're talking classic tracker music:

And the other volumes on his page. Some of the best soundtracks from the Amiga demo scene, free and with the original .mod files.

Then again, what say you Dendy? Which of the two trackers do you prefer? M8, or Tracker Mini?

well, it's clear winner M8 for me because of better synth engines, 3 band parametric EQ per instrument, 3 effect slots per step instead of 2 on mini, chorus effect (mini has only reverb / delay)

Interesting paradox - less buttons on M8 is working for me better than more dedicated buttons on Mini - i learned shortcuts on M8 very quickly and i can work extremely fast now. What i really like i can work with M8 even in complete darkness, where with Mini when i tried it it was constant fight with "which button is where".. That's for me important factor cause i often play with it in bed when wife is sleeping or watching netflix co there is not ideal light conditions to watch labels under buttons lol

Don't get me wrong, Mini is very good device too.. lot of fun.. and synth engines are quite good, plus you have more abailable tracks (8 for samples plus another 3 independent synth instances with pokyohony up to 8 voices which you can freely assign between those 3 synth instances)

It's just that after i got M8, i lost magic for me, i am now full blown attached to M8 :)

Oh in terms of battery, i would say Mini holds much longer.

That's awesome! Thanks for the comparison. Looks like I'll wait for the next M8 v2 preorder. :) I want to have a go with the tracker in bed, not be fiddling with "which button is which".

Meanwhile, a couple more questions for you.

    1. Are you able to access M8 files on iPad via a dedicated SD card reader and the Files app? Or do I need to find the laptop I used with the OP-1 Field? Can firmware be installed via iPad?

(I confirmed with someone from Polyend that I'd need the laptop to sort the files in a Tracker Mini. 😬 I'd prefer not.)

    1. Do you use your own SD card? Or the one provided? What is the storage capacity of the one provided?

Sorry if these questions seem redundant. I'm a bit high and can't recall if I already asked them earlier. 😂

i’m on vacation until end of august and i don’t have card reader with me but i don’t see reason why it should not work - it’s standard file system on card so i bet it will work

Can firmware be installed via iPad?

Nope, you need special desktop app for this, and connect M8 to computer via USB, unfortunatelly

(I confirmed with someone from Polyend that I'd need the laptop to sort the files in a Tracker Mini. 😬 I'd prefer not.)

This is not true, you can access Mini files on SD card connected into card reader easily using Files app .. this is also reason why i think it will be same with M8 - it’s just standard file system ..

    1. Do you use your own SD card? Or the one provided? What is the storage capacity of the one provided?

I use the provided one .. it’s Kingston Canvas Go Plus 64 GB

Sorry if these questions seem redundant. I'm a bit high and can't recall if I already asked them earlier. 😂

No problem, ask whatever you want to know, i’m
    glad to help ;)

Wow! I can't believe they accomplished all of that based on a Teensy microprocessor board. $25 bucks for the processor board + $625 for the mojo. 😎

Totally out of my price range.
But it does look like there's well over $625 of mojo there!

  • Well mates, I just got news that next Wednesday morning (morning in US that is) is when the M8 v2 goes on pre-order again, which will ship in November. Technically I should have the money raised by then, but it will suck if I'm a bit short after the upcoming bills. Yikes!

Huh. Prioritizing paying the bills over buying hardware. A novel approach!

Lol I know right? 😂 It sucks, but if I'm not on top of my tight budget I will sink like the Titanic.

  • I was so excited about SquareBeat. It had some workflow quirks, otherwise it would be an awesome tracker.

What kind of workflow quirks? Perhaps I will go with SquareBeat. Been diving into NS2 to try and finish up this bloody EP/Album, and didn't have much time to put in the research of the various iOS trackers juuuuust yet. 😅

  • You could get a retro handheld and run LSDJ on it. Some of the Anbernic ones will even run M8 headless

Just some simple QOL, one uniform way to switch between the screens and locking the editor while playing the piano.
Now when you try to play a little melody, the note is added to the editor.
Also some au3v plugins crash on loading.

I would like to add LPGT tracker to this list, it also runs on cheap retro handhelds. It is like LSDJ only sample based. Kind of like a M8 UltraLite :)
This was my go-to before I got a M8 tracker.

I use a forked version on a psp with custom firmware.

This version has many QOL features, some ideas are taken from the M8 tracker.

  • I'm on MacOS and just downloaded PixiTracker.

The initial startup experience is, um, interesting ;)

Any tips on how to get going? Yeah, RTFM. But any other advice to have a Quick Start?
