Great deal on new Arturia MK2 Midi Controller (and review)
I just ordered an Arturia MK 2 49 key from ProAudioStar for $279 with free shipping. New at Sweetwater and every other retailer $449! This controller has incredible connectivity (expression, sustain, 3x aux, 3x CV, midi in and out) and has an aluminum case.
Review down the thread.
Comments
That's a good deal, though I've ordered new items from ProAudioStar that were clearly used.
Tell us how you like the keybed. I had a MKI Keylab, and the keys were spongy. Hopefully they improved it on MKII.
@StudioES i believe they have improved the keyboard as it now has the same keybed as on their expensive Maxibrute. I’ll let you know how I like it, tho my use will be limited. No drum pads, faders and, probably, knobs. I want to use it for getting more expressiveness on SWAMs and synths.
That's good to hear that they improved the keybed.
That price is tempting, especially with the all-metal aluminum case. Hard to find a MIDI controller with a metal case.
@StudioES lol, obviously, we want them for our dogs!
Ha ha, just noticed that.
Found this on the interwebs.
@StudioES haha!
That’s a great price. Not much more than the Essentials version.
I have the 49 key mk3 essentials version. In my case the non-essential version was a non starter as it’s too big to fit in the space I had available on my desk. But your one has a much better keyboard than the essentials version.
Haha @klownshed i got the version to suit my station in life… non essential. I’m wondering if the connectivity is as extensive on the Essentils. This one has 3 aux inputs along with sustain and expression.
I haven’t had pitch and mod wheels except for the Cubasis keyboard for several years now.I look forward to messing with it.
That looks like a lot of keyboard for the cash. Hope you have fun with it!
Same seller has it for $246.99 on Reverb.
Haha.
Connectivith wise it’s not even close. The essentials has USB C, MIDI out and one assignable pedal input. It also has a plastic case.
It’s still a great keyboard though.
More than enough for what I needed it for. Things like it being light and small make it better for my specific use case. The ‘non-essential’ is clearly a much better keyboard though. For the price I think you got a really good deal.
@klownshed that’s why I wanted to share it with everyone. They must have overbought.
Nice score LL! 👍 I would imagine you are a connoisseur of key weight and action with the pianos you played so interested in your feedback on the feel.
@gusgranite @McD I received the MK2 and I’m extremely happy with it. It’s a synth semi weighted keyboard and is very pleasant to play.
After many attempts to control expression parameters (ExpressiveE pedal, NovaRing, Osmose, Seaboard Rise) all of which didn’t suit me, the Arturia seems to finally fill the bill. I’ve only played it with the mod wheel so far, but there are three aux pedal inputs plus expression, sustain and aftertouch.. Once I learn how to midi map I’ll be able to control all the qualities I want to in a format that suits me.
It’s great because playing horns and strings on my expensive Kawai Novus does not work very well because of the real piano action in it. The synth action is way better for the SWAMs.
It’s still on sale for $279. Even though I’m only using it for a narrow purpose it’s full value as a midi controller looks wonderful. It comes with some terrific Arturia software, too. And the build is superb. I recommend it highly for anyone looking for a high quality controller at an extremely low price.
Congrats to your purchase! Arturia stuff is great, I have both a Minifuse 2 audio interface and a Keystep 37!

Sounds like a bargain, I'm guessing they are clearing the mk2s to make way for the newly released Mk3s. The mk2s are better in some ways than the 3s ie full metal chassis not plastic top, 16 pads instead of 12, cv connection.
Disappointingly the mk3 does not have poly aftertouch which many were expecting but has introduced a key release thingamajig.
My maudio code 61will stay until I can get at least a polyaftertouch for a reasonable price, but at that price I'd choose the Arturia mk2 over the mk3 if it broke.
Just got a vgc key step 37 and I love the feel of those mini keys. Connected to 2 or 3 synths simultaneously* in AUM playing with the velocity and aftertouch gently feels like fondling a weird shaped noise making stress ball :-)
*pianoteq, FFtwin 3 and animoogz(an arp preset) is a great combo to fool myself into thinking it is poly aftertouch with the different sounds reacting differently to velocity/aftertouch.
@deadpoetlive i think the mk2 and mk3 are two different lines. Mk3, I believe is a part of the Keyboard Essentials line, a keyboard with fewer features and connectivity. Ditching the mk2 would mean stopping the 88mk2 as well?
Only been out a few days 49mk3 and 61mk3. The 88mk3 is to be released later.
A lot of people seem to think the mk3 is a downgrade on the mk2, especially if you want to control analogue synths.
Don't know if you will also use it with a MacBook or PC but if you do, you get some top class Arturia software synths for free on registering it.
Looking forward to the wonderful music you will create with it. :-)
Makes me wonder if I should have a synth keyboard in place of a hammer 88, which then uses a launchpad for synths and the ipad screen for mpe swam.
Although the keys would be a bit nicer than launchpad for synths.
I hide all the controls above the keys under wood so the ipads are a bit closer.
So likely the correct decision.
Although Id like some keys for my latest spur of synth patches.
It will never be, unless I quit piano ( I dont think so )
Is the arturia one of the best key controllers for synths?
You seen that new 3.5k Arturia synth ?
The Arturia website indicates that there is a Keylab mk3
@deadpoetlive hmmm. He is comparing it to the Essential, not the mk2. It is a bit confusing. If it were mk2 wouldn’t he be comparing it to that not the Essentials. I did find this…
so, that proves you’re correct. They’re calling both Essential and Keylab mk3.
But I wonder why the other big retailers are not discounting. My Sweetwater guy could not match the price. The connectivity is less, no metal case, I guess, and they moved the wheels up (which is not ergonomic, IMO).
The mk2 will be better for swams ( the mod wheels )
