In praise of noodling

There was a thread earlier this month about the pros and cons of excessive noodling.
Personally I’m a great fan of noodling around on guitar, well actually it’s GeoShred but you know what I mean… this is the end result of several nights of miscellaneous noodling.
GeoShred playing iFretless Guitar, BeatHawk Double Bass and Roli Noise String and Horns.

  • Absolutely beautiful. Sometimes it takes a while to create a great melody and solo. They don’t just happen instantaneously unless your name is Coltrane, Parker or Ellington. Even those cats spent years and years practicing. Really nice track. I’m sitting out on my patio listening and watching the world go by. Getting a taste for stir fry noodles. We have some in the fridge. Maybe I’ll get lucky tonight.

  • 👍 Hope you managed the noodles @Paulieworld 🍜

Those noodles are fat. :) Must be udon…

One of the quietest but most profound moments of musical appreciation for me was once when I was visiting a friend who was a fellow music journalist. Unlike me, however, he was a proper musician. As we sat over coffee, he had a beautiful Gretsch semi acoustic in his hands, and was, yes, noodling, in a Django Reinhardt kind of way, without thinking about it at all, as he chatted with me. In that moment, I envied him his natural ability so much… it was beautiful.

Lovely sounds, impressive accuracy and judicious use of slides, I'd be tempted to overdo them because they sound so nice.

I do find Thumbjam so much easier to get a decent sound from, horizontal and x axis vibrato, just one finger and a fixed scale with no wrong notes.

Do you have a preferred size of iPad for this?

When I try Geoshred it's like my fingers are at a party, some turn up early, some late, a few gatecrashers....and some going to the wrong address altogether!!

  • @GeoTony , Listening to this enhanced the already good feels that I’m experiencing this morning – having woken up to an empty house for the first time since school let out last spring, enjoying freshly ground Cuban beans with some oats mixed with granola. It’s a welcome change to my short cut food accompanied with the background of infernal television.

    I love your metaphor @deadpoetlive 😂

I’ve found @Svetlovska that noodling on an iPad doesn’t seem to have same effect on an audience as a real guitar does. My coach load of groupies is yet to appear 😊
    @Edward_Alexander 🙏
I think this another case of ‘the bigger the better’ @deadpoetlive … a 12.9 inch iPad Pro. Used to have an 11 inch which was fine but I can get more frets on the the bigger machine. Continuing your metaphor I must be the geeky boy who stayed at home and played with himself (musically speaking)
Glad your enjoying life @Blipsford_Baubie ☕️🥣📺

  • Very nice! It’s never that easy to noodle something coherent, but you have certainly done so there.

  • This is far too beautiful and purposeful to me to be considered “noodling”. When I think of noodling it’s just a bunch of randomness, like improvisation but undisciplined. What you’ve got here is miles better.

  • Wonderful! You are indeed a master of this app! Lovely arrangement and that guitar sound, with the occasional slides is very authentic sounding. I can close my eyes and see someone like Steve Hackett or Dave Gilmour playing something like this whilst "noodling" around.

  • Thanks @michael_m , @MadeofWax and @AlterEgo_UK
There was lots of random noodling before I managed to record this 😕
Hackett or Gilmour would have nailed this first take… I won’t say how many attempts it took me 🤔
