Does Anyone Know If There is a Reverse Reverb App?

I’m trying to make a Shoegaze effects chain.
I have found reverse delays and every other effect.
But I can’t remember if any apps have specifically reverse reverb.
Any help would be much appreciated 👍😊

I initially wanted to make the whole chain in ToneStack but that doesn’t have a reverse reverb, although it does have a reverse delay.

Other Desert Cities also has a reverse delay.

I’m sure there must be something.

  • I feel like Blackhole’s gravity in the negative settings is kinda reverse reverb… it’s not clean like the one on my lexicon though

  • Chromaverb has a reverse, if I'm remembering correctly.

  • @Krupa Yes, it’s not really what I’m looking for although I am going to try that, cheers👍

  • Ok, now that I'm checking the manual, I don't see any reverse option there :/

  • Velvet Machine with an exponential ramp might get quite close to a reverse reverb effect.

It's actually Space Designer, not Chromaverb. I haven't used the feature, so I'm not sure if its what you're looking for, but there is a reverse button in the "details" section by latency compensation. Page 660 in the manual.

  • Crystalline from Baby Audio has a 'reverse mode' (pink button in the output section).

  • And Stellarvox has a 'Reversed' Space (in the Space column).

  • Excellent, I shall try all of the above.

  • @Samu Thanks Sam, Crystalline is perfect, exactly what I was looking.
Someone should make a dedicated reverse reverb.

  • Mixbox has Inverse Reverb.

  • @thesoundtestroom for me the Crystalline effect didn't come close enough to the MBV guitar sound (YMMV of course). Blackhole with the Gravity dialled all the way to the left was better, and Other Desert Cities with the Reverse Delay and the Diffusion (in the second tab, tap the circular button) set to max is also worth a try.

Worth mentioning that part of the seasick washy sound comes from the tremolo arm on the guitar as well.

Also there are some IRs online of the Alesis MIDIverb II and the Yamaha SPX90, which are the units Kevin Shields used,

  • I just did some testing with MixBox, Blackhole, Crystalline, and Other Desert Cities and IMO Other Desert Cities is the best option by far, you have a lot more control over the sound and to my ears it's the one I can get the closest to that MBV guitar sound. You do have increase the mix on the Diffusion to make it more reverb-y, but once you do that it's really close.

Might give you more control over the effect?

    Yes, yaleD is excellent.

I think Velvet Machine also does a reverse reverb...

I'm making my own impulse responses inside Drambo, you can process and capture existing room IRs or just play with fading in/out white noise. IRs can also mimick delays etc, I don't know of any app that is more flexible.

  • These are all great suggestions and I’ll try them, I’ll also try the ODC settings too.
Stacking a few of these together may also be a lot of fun.

  • Just remembered another: Kai Aras' RE-1 Virtual Tape Machine does a reverse, which might also serve the purpose.

    Ha! Drambo!
    Who could tell B) :D

  • @cramdog After having played with all this stuff most of the day now, I have to say that the Inverse Reverb in MixBox is extremely good, mainly because of the Pre-Delay giving control over the time,

  • Does tails do reverse??

  • Doug did you try crystalline?

I tried to stay clear from recommending Drambo and the usage of custom impulse-responses :sunglasses:

  • lol dRambo can do ANYTHING ;)

  • Thanks to everyone for all your suggestions.
So this is still a work in progress, but I used MixBox for the entire chain for this first one.
I think I might make some with different apps.

  • Now we're ready for some Belle & Sebastian... ;)

It does not, nor does Cascade. 🙂

A reverse gated reverb was always my pick as part of a big distorted but controllable shoegaze sound.

Great work on the Mixbox chain Doug. Love it!

Hey Doug, great thread, lot’s of fantastic suggestions. Did you consider using reverse delays? They can achieve similar effects, like for example, Turnado. On the desktop, I’m using Sandman Pro for the same thing.

  • AltiSpace 2 has a number of reverse reverb IR presets , including some gated ones:

One of the reverse gate reverbs is from the Yamaha SPX90 that @richardyot mentioned before.
