Are there any good song/guitar note-taking apps?

Lately, I have been finding it difficult to remember new songs and have been scribbling down notes the old fashioned way - with pen and paper.

My notes (see pic - please excuse my scrawl) can include: simple chord progressions; chord boxes to show particular voicings; basic rhythm patterns; and guitar tablature (optional).

I have Notion, but it’s too full-on and slow for this job. This process needs to be quick and painless.

Are there any good music/guitar note taking apps (universal - I’m on iPhone only) out there? What apps are you using?

  • Goodnotes is my note taking app for everything, musical or otherwise. I have staff paper and chord diagram page templates in there for musical things. It can also record audio now, so you can do a lot with it.

Thanks, good idea. I already have Goodnotes. I’m using an iPhone, so no Apple Pencil, but I’ll give it a try.

Ah, never mind then! I don’t have a solution for iPhone, other than using paper and scanning using genius scan or an app like that to save as a pdf.

Idk if this would fit, but what about Jam Maestro? Or something like Jam Maestro, ChordPolyPad/ Navichord hosted in AUM (which has note taking functionality)

my response to a post on the fediverse yesterday

  • Thanks for the suggestions @mjcouche will have a look.

Great response @u0421793! This is probably the way to go - I'm foolishly writing on scraps of paper and really should buy a nice notepad.

There’s a lot of options, including printing out blank template paper and using that. I typically like to hand write my songs first, since it feels more natural and quick to me.

On top of several apps dedicated to doing this, you can easily use apps like Notability, Zoom Notes, Digital Notes, & Inkflow Plus Pro version which might still be free usually $7

Some of the dedicated apps are

    Chord! $4.99
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/chord/id606691230

    SongKit $9.99
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/songkit/id1509076878

Song kit + Chord Bundle of both is $11.99

    Songwriting Notebook
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/songwriting-notebook/id6479946631

If you’re mostly writing on guitar there is a bunch of Tab writing apps.

    Guitar Tab Maker

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/guitar-tab-maker/id1384053393

There’s many more apps available, but these are the ones I can think of at the time of writing this…

Jam Maestro should fit, not as much flexibility as say a digital note app where you can draw whatever you want, but is surely an option.

I keep a lot of individual jam notes inside AUM’s note folder, but when writing on guitar I typically hand write, then scan or digitize if something I continue to work on.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions @Poppadocrock, much appreciated.

  • Hello Justchords is free and under active development, with a lot of new features. See https://apps.apple.com/us/app/justchords/id1632968272
I have SongKit. Interesting features, but some small bugs remain. Doesn't seem to be under active development.

    Cheers!

  • Update: Been looking at the app suggestions and most of them are specialised and do not cover all the things in my scribbled example above in the opening post - with the exception of ... JustChords.
JustChords is a free app and has an incredibly responsive dev. I had some problems initially and Marek was very quick to help me out - thanks again @marekpalka if you're here. The app has a lot of cool features and is fairly easy to use, but I do need to practice to get quicker at using it.
Failing that I'll be looking at available styluses (styli?) for iPhone and using GoodNotes, or buying pen & notebook.
    Thanks again, everyone.

  • Just Chords is a great app, I’ve had it for awhile now, back when it was $4.99. I thought when it went free there was an IAP to unlock all the features, but after checking the App Store I noticed the IAP’s were only donations.

Yes, the dev has a 3 tier donation option. Buy me a: coffee; pineapple; or book. I'll probably send a few pineapples. :#
