Song Of The Month Club - September 2024
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material
And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:
You and me, we both know
We made our minds up long ago
I know you well, and in your soul
Something new is taking hold
You never felt like this before
This is what you waited for
You feel like you’re on fire
It’s burning right through you
You feel so alive
And I’m seeing it too
And so you’re dreaming
You can’t stop believing
You love the feeling
That’s running through you
You know me, I can tell
That your life is going well
It’s for the best, I tell myself
I can stay here on the shelf
You’ve never let me in the door
All those years I wanted more
You feel like you’re on fire
It’s burning right through you
You feel so alive
And I’m seeing it too
And so you’re dreaming
You can’t stop believing
You love the feeling
That’s running through you
Great job - lyrically and melodically very nice
Here’s my entry - I posted it separately last month, so apologies if you’ve already heard it. Occasionally I’ll write a song that I’m especially pleased with, and this is one of those. It was written and recorded quickly and the acoustic guitars were done in (more or less) one take, as was the vocal.
Took a roundabout way to finally find you
The endless meandering and bumps in the road
But oh when I did, I finally discovered
What being in love means and what it’s like to strike gold
No flash in the pan, no two year wonder
The decades stretch on, we’re not news anymore
Still I reach for your hand as the TV drones on
Unhearing, not watching I’m lost in the glow
When I say you’re beautiful you think I’m blinded by love
Well I know it’s not true, if you stood in my shoes
You would see the love that I feel everyday
When the demons creep in, when worry takes over
When my complex mind it seems to explode
You restore the peace, my strength and my rock
You say everything’s OK and I know that it’s true
My choice of long words, the world’s worst romantic
You forgive the sceptic, poor excuses, the cynic
But my heart is so true and I’ll do right by you
We still fall about laughing we can flourish and thrive
Another great track
Wow September started off with a bang
Happy Labor Day
The guitars are beautiful, and the vocal is pitch-perfect. Nice simple arrangement that breathes well, the piano bolsters the guitars very effectively and provides some contrast. The lead parts are my favourite bit.
@BillS man one of your best performances. Really great . (What’d you use ?)
5/5 stars
This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the bassoon, cello, and flute; Noire for the piano; Speculative Memories and Epic Choir for the singing voices; and Omnisphere for the other instruments.
After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.
It's titled The Magic Shop.

But something about this video is different . Anyway unique composition and video - great ending
@richardyot I like the song a lot, but the EQ is weird here. On AirPods Pro 2, on the max and on the dt770.
@bills great job. Super clean mix. Made me travel far from the cave I’m stuck in.
@DavidEnglish, I loved this one when you put it one YouTube a while ago. I still like it.
And my contribution:

Or the not final version:
Nice one Richard, like the intro intro, feels familiar in a good way, really like the chorus. If you drop the volume a fraction just before it hits and make the chorus a bit louder it might be even more effective. Either way, good job.
I have heard it before and I am very pleased to hear it again, lovely guitars, I think the freshness of one take gives a nice feeling of hearing it live. Do you do open mics/live performance?
Nice idea, thanks! I've just updated the SC link and now the bass drops out in the pre-chorus and the guitars and vocals are up a little bit when the chorus hits.
Thanks, what's the issue you're hearing, is the highs or the lows?
The beginning suggests foreboding yet it becomes meditative, it seems to be both melancholic and light at the same time, an impressive feat. The video is rather hypnotic, what did you use to make it and is it specifically triggered by the music? Top class.
No definition in the highs, it sounds very muddy / flat. It is the first time I have that impression with your music.
@jo92346 fantastic catchy song, outstanding guitar work and great production. Really, really good 👏
@richardyot lovely song, and your knack of making memorable songs with singalong choruses is shows no sign of abating.
@DavidEnglish classy, beautiful timbres aplenty and the piece develops and evolves naturally and maintains interest throughout. Great job as usual. The title is intriguing - often I can imagine where your titles might come from (rightly or wrongly), but not this time.
Thank you so much! I played in the piano parts on my Yamaha piano, routing midi to Pianoteq, the acoustic guitar is just an old lower end Takemine which needs new strings, but actually worn strings can sound decent sometimes too! The drums are from EZ Drummer. I record my vocals through an Aston Origin mic and for years now in the vocal chain I’ve used a Waves EQ plugin - the Scheps 73 which I think helps bring clarity without harshness.
@deadpoetlive thanks - haven’t played in a pub for about 15 years now! Have toyed with the idea a few times since but it’s never happened for one reason or another.

I'll take some time to listen to other submissions before posting.
Eerily beautiful composition. Thoughtfully put together, the song naturally evolves and seems to tell a (slightly mournful) story, even without words. Very nicely produced too.
Nice build up, the piano comes in right on time and a perfect changeover to another instrument. Feels quite dark, soundtrack to an abandoned subway lights flickering on and off.
Beautiful track. The main piano theme is hypnotic and really hooky, I love the textures behind it, then the break with the strings and the new lead part, and then the drums come in 😍, and then the piano theme is reintroduced. It's a superb and really engaging arrangement, full of wonderful music and a terrific vibe.
@unlink I love everything in this piece, especially the intro: the production, sound, orchestration re excellent.
Another very well-constructed song, the virtual guitars are very convincing, the melody is very strong and the song is very well arranged. The vocals are too tightly tuned for me, but I think you've already said that's an inevitable side-effect of the process. The song would feel more authentically country with less of the autotune effect
Love the cello that underpins the piece, and the slowly evolving soundscape that emerges from the performance. A very calming piece.
Thanks.
It is a side effect of my process, but I actually like how it sounds and instead of trying to hide it, I used (tried to use) the autotune creatively, literally using it when it isn’t needed.
@richardyot nice track, catchy and flows really well. I agree with jo92346, there is something with the mix because it sounds very busy and a bit flat.
@BillS great! I love your singing and the way you tell stories the only thing which bothers me a bit (not sure if bothers is the right word, english is not my main language) is the piano which is a bit off in some parts where it's just your voice and the piano, like at around 3 minutes.
@DavidEnglish I like all of your compositions which include piano and bassoon, I find them really expressive.
@jo92346 cool track! Very catchy, mix is great and the music pairs perfectly with the lyrics and idea of the track. The shredding near the end is great!
@unlink thank you so much! “Bothers” is I think the correct word…I am a new piano player (less than a year) and my timing can be a bit dodgy sometimes - but rather than attempt to tidy things up by lots of midi editing I pretty much leave it as it is, a little untidy but honest I guess!
I definitely agree! I was a quantization maniac but then I realised how much better the tracks are with a bit of human touch. Still I would appreciate a bit more quantization
And now for something quantized within an inch of its life
I originally made the bones of this track ages ago but never found a way to finish it at the time. I was listening to it recently and thought maybe film samples might work with it and this is the result. It came together reasonably quickly once I knew what I wanted to do with it after going down many dead ends. It only took 2½ years. True story.
Even if it does sound more like it took 2½ minutes
