physical modeling synths!
there are generally not enough physical modeling synths out there, imho
i think this synth method has high potential, for making interesting, new sounds that are far from trying to imitate guitar, strings a.s.o.
i love modalys for max, own rings and a few karplus strong options for modular and like the spektrum suite for iOS
while i can get great stuff out of modalys, cause im able to build my own interface around it, im also interested in plasmonic, the new(er) synth from absynth creater brian clevinger
and i guess elektron will have a physical modeling synth out in the near future…
but i wish, someone would make something for iOS that can get more into the experimental site. and from my experience, cool modulation options are the key
could also be interesting to make the synth semi-modular by being able to combine different modules like resonators and karplus strong algorithms for example
i also wish @gsdsp would be the ones, releasing it…
ok, thanks. bye! :P
Comments
and yes, i will build me something in drambo
still, a dedicated synth would be nice
I'm waiting for baby Audio's Atoms!
interesting. thanks for the heads up! did they say, they wanna port it to ios?
They said they are working on it!
+1 for Plasmonic, I have it and love it, but never use it as I currently don't have a working desktop / laptop. That dev doesn't seem very clued up on marketing despite how long he's been in the plugin game, so it flies a bit under the radar. Would love to see an iOS version - it would immediately be my favourite iOS app if that happened.
You have Sculpture already. The best one! 😏
I can highly recommend Kaivo by Madrona Labs.
On the hardware side Anyma Phi. It’s fantastic.
Another modular playground: miRack has Resonator, Modal synthesis and Karplus Strong modules. Almost any knob can be CV modulated.
I‘d love to make one actually, something that‘s based on samples and my spectral analysis so you end up with a keyboard playable physical modelling sampler. Too many other projects at the moment though!
An ancient relic but way ahead for it’s time was Tassman from Applied Acoustic Systems.
Kaivo is another great one yes!
@pseudophysics mentioning ”physical modeling synths” but not in the traditional way like pianos strings or woodwinds, but, isn’t that also some kind of synth sound if we listen carefully?
If you/we own full version of Pianoteq for iOS we can go pretty wild with the sounds and characteristics…
Pianoteq, SWAM-series, Cantoria Organ, an other physical modeling instrument must be taken in consideration if you/we longing for some wild sound design…
Pianoteq definitely has more room than Swam for creativity (as long as you are on at least Standard version). Swam is highly limited in its sound design potential, as it is really just focused on sounding like the real instrument. Neither of these comes close to offering you the sound design and real time manipulation abilities of a dedicated physical modeling synth like Sculpture, Plasmonic or Kaivo. That said, it is definitely worth playing around with the Pianoteq settings if your tier allows their tweaking. I also love using the Pianoteq morphing function.
Also on iOS from AAS is Objeq.

Yeah, Plasmonic and Chromaphone 3 on iOS for christmas please 😉
Drop everything else!
Now there’s an intriguing idea. So you’d sample a sound and using AI or some other clever programming break the audio into components which can be controlled with standard sound modeling techniques?
Honestly, what I’ve been most looking forward to is someone finally creating modeled drums and percussion which could be morphed into any kind of kit one might imagine. For example: Why are there no Octobans or Roto-Toms or PVC pipe drum options in any drum kits? Why can’t I get a satisfactory Simmons drum sound by twiddling some dials or blend 2-3 different sound sources easily to fatten up a snare when it’s needed?
that would be great! but i dont know how cpu intense his synth actually is
oh, nice!
i might get into logic for ios in the future. right now, im pretty happy with my drambo setup
forgot kaivo. i own this for a long time, havent used it in a while
sounds good, but i have a quite big eurorack hardware setup and im using the ipad as a sidekick for other stuff
uhoh, you might regret writing this on here sounds like a really interesting concept
while resonators, maybe impulse response methods and the good old karplus strong are all nice concepts im all up for spectral remodeling
…im also missing a good additive synth like razor on ios
anyway, keep up the good work. ive got quite a few of your apps in my arsenal
oh yeah, i own this and forgot to mention it. impaktor from beepstreet is also great. i should use both more often
That UI is a nightmare! They need to create a proper UI for the iOS version
>
LOL! And it's so compact!
good to know. but yeah i heard great things about sculpture. plaid was using it intensely in the early noughties
Agreed! That one is a headache! Here's the Sculpture on Logic for Mac. Okay, there are some stuff that would become small bur over all it looks like it should work for iPad ...
Maybe they need to hold a contest to see who can redesign the best interface. Offer the winner a job at Apple.
Understand - and you just triggered my envylope...
