Hmmm… i wonder if this is interesting for people like us.

This is app-specific, right? I think we need to start asking app developers to update their apps with Game Mode as an option.

Is it app specific? See the quote I posted above which suggests that any game should offer game mode:

"How to use Game Mode on iPhone in iOS 18:
    Launch a game
You should automatically see Game Mode On appear at the top of your screen
If you want to disable Game Mode manually, tap the pop-up alert when you see it"

If audio app devs could do something to implement it, that would be a good idea. But would it have to be enabled by all the apps involved? Eg, would AUM need to enable something as well as the hosted AUv3s also enabling it? Maybe some devs could chip on on how doable all this would be @SevenSystems @brambos

I'm planning to make the switch from Android to iPhone this fall. For music production, do you think the 16 Pro Max is worth it (over the 16 plus)?

Check the price differences first - just an musical enthusiast, go for ordinary iPhone 16 Plus, but, if you plan to use your iPhone in all kind of areas, like music making, shooting and editing videos in 4K/120fps, then go for iPhone 16 Pro Max…

Never thought Id need a good iphone.

What would you buy camera wise. Map wise for cycling. Obviously anything modern will augment music production but got enough devices really, for music.

I guess difference in cam qualit from whats in the Apple store. SE to 16 pro.

For my recommendation…Get an old iPhone Pro or Pro Max phone.
From the 12 to the 15, you can get an incredible phone for less than half the price.

Don’t fall for the marketing trap. The advancements isn’t enough to justify getting a new phone.

    Unless you really need USB-C.

About the new camera control button.

I think they did the right thing here by making it both a button and a slider. I'll have to test it out in their store for myself.

What were you hoping to see?

What I have missed on my iPhone 13 Pro Max is a descent Macro photography function - I hope that this iPhone 16 improvments will give us both Macro and higher real resolution on taken pictures…

I recommend getting a Moment or Ulanzi lens kit (used), with a Macro lens. Your phone is perfect enough.

I know this…I bought the lens, and used it. I don’t do enough macro photography to even justify it being on a device.

Apple designs it usable for a wide market of people. Not for specialized cases.

I recommend getting new only if you plan on getting it on a 2 -year agreement. If paying upfront, get anything from the iPhone 12 Pro to the 15 Pro (or pro max) and pay less than half the price of the new one.

An expensive camera lens is not worth paying $1000. A newer chip is not worth. We were making amazing music on the iPhone 6s+ which supported iOS 15.

The phones from the 12, onward have the improved display, and look similar to the other modern phones, especially if you use a case, which is why I’m recommending them.

Heck, my iPhone 12 Pro Max looks more expensive than my friends 15 Pro Max because I’m using a Moment case that I bought on sale for $20

I'm going to counter that by saying that:

    1. You're only as good as the camera you have with you. I have my iPhone Pro Max 15 with me at all times and it takes stunning photos everywhere. I don't have to worry about attaching additional lenses etc... Just point and click.

    2. USB C is definitely worth it. My MacBook Pro Air and iPad Pro are both USB C so I only need to take one charger with me and I know I can always pick up another charger if I accidentally loose mine.

Agreed on both points. Which is why I mentioned to upgrade to the Pro models of the previous generation. The 15 also has USB-C.

There's definitely some kind of flag you have to activate, but I'm not sure if it's something that can be switchable, as not everyone will want this (ie. anyone without AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones, so it would be great if it was just an option that can be user-switched-on!). I'm wondering if latency is reduced enough to make live recording while wearing AirPods start to be more realistic - that's the holy grail of iOS music app functionality for me!

It does take good macro photos. You can increase the precision with an external lens like Moment.

It’s the same principle a professional camera works as.

You have your device (Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc) which can be your phone (iPhone 15 Pro, Google Pixel 5, Samsung S23)

On its own, it can take great photos based on the manufacturers spec. You add a lens, or filter, or mesh to improve the quality, and range.

In regards to the phone, it could be an external lens (Moment, Ulanzi), different app (Moment, Filmic Pro, etc) or filters (monochrome setting in camera app, color balance, external filters, etc)

Combine them to form your own unique kit.

I am not in any way saying a phone is a camera. That's up to the photographer to decide. I'm saying, work with the tools that works for you and take the pictures you want to take.

The AIAIAI TMA-2 Studio Wireless+ headphones work pretty well for this. I have tried them with guitar and keyboards and the latency is imperceptible to me. Only issue is they need a transmitter dongle - that also needs charging.

@tubespace - I believe you will be far, far happier with the larger format phone. Music making on a small device isn't a whole lot of fun if you ask me. I do it but I can't say I enjoy it other than with a very few apps like Koala.

Thank you. Yes, my main device is a 9th Gen iPad. I plan on upgrading that either next year or the year after. For now, I was thinking it might be good to have an iPhone to record some ideas on the go (and at work). But perhaps being so small compared to the iPad, maybe the novelty will wear off quickly, and I will hardly use the iPhone to make music.

Yeah, buying used is a tricky decision. Apple doesn’t sell older models. But every cellular provider does. I picked up my 12 Pro Max from Telus at less than half the price on a 2 year agreement with their Black Friday plans. But I’ve also bought things directly from the Apple Store, like my Mac Mini. I look for the better deal.

Find what works for you. And be comfortable with it.

Also, I just bought another iPad 9th Gen. it currently is the best music producer iPad simply because it still keeps the headphone jack.

I'm in Canada, and Apple doesn't offer the Pro models for anything under the new 16 (and I'm not interested in used/refurbished).
So really, I'm just interested in the 16 Plus or the 16 Pro Max. I also like some of the new features in the 16. I will be purchasing upfront. But I'm not sure the Pro Max over the Plus is worth it for using AUv3 apps plus some iOS DAWs.

My fellow Canadian, what’s up? I’m in Toronto. Let me know when next you’re in town and we can hang.

Yo - Toronto! I'm on the left coast - Vancouver -- haven't been in Toronto for many years, but someday, yes.
I also use the 9th gen iPad - still going strong. Good advice - I'll just have to figure out which phone - we wanna buy once and hang on to it for 6 years, so I'm hoping for durability, too

Yeah, in that case, buying new would be a decent plan. If you don’t need the latest and greatest, wait till November Black Friday sale and snag a deal on the previous generation.

How do I know this? Worked for Rogers for 4 years.

FYI - my dedicated text when I described my sadness that Apple has taken an decision to not support my iPhone 13 Pro Max, that was about iOS 18.1, not iOS 18.0…

In iOS 18.1 Apple reveal the full Apple Intelligence including the ”thing” I was hoping to get on my iPhone 13 Pro Max, ”Clean Up” in Photos app…

So, you’re correct, very broad collection of iPhones will be getting iOS 18.0, but, very few will have access to full blown integrated AI (Apple Intelligence)…

Strange, but this evening (in Europe) all of a sudden Apple putting out iOS18.1 beta 4 to my iPhone 13 Pro Max!!??

It has previous been impossible to go longer than 18.0 beta 7…

Apple has made an redecision, or?

  • One more thing when we walk in the world of OS18 or OS18.1B4 - why can’t we still not use the bigger iPhones in 100% landscape Mode??

I wanna have the startscreen in both portrait AND landscape when the appropriate rotation is done…

As I know, this has been possible on Android for five years (if I remember right), so, c’mon Apple, don’t hesitate on every good thing that is both possible and really good!

Pretty sure Apple will never allow landscape operation of the desktop on the phone. They reserve that for iPad.

In that manner, Apple are assholes…

Pretty annoying when I use my iPhone 13 Pro Max as a display to my controller when flying Dji drone…

As I’ve said before on this forum - we are a lot of people around the globe that have an Love & Hate relationship with Apple…
