Hub cable extension question (solved: Cable Creation cable works)

Hi, I’ve tried to use this female to male usb c cable to connect an Ankar hub to my iPad. When I plug the hub directly into the iPad no problem. When I use the extension, even though the iPad chimes at the connection, no signal passes through.

It’s not a bad cable because I have two of them and neither works. Here is the cable description…

Ankar says it requires a type 2 cable, but the above is type 2, no? Maybe this would work?

Could this be the problem?

If it’s the wrong cable pls suggest the correct cable to get. Thanks, as always!

@LinearLineman my understanding is that extension cables are simply not part of the USB-C standard, so any cable that promises this functionality is just a bet. That said, I did use this one for a while a few years ago without issues. I have since switched to using hubs with detachable cables.

Edit: I remembered I did have one issue with that cable: the orientation in which I plugged mattered, I don't recall at which end.

I think that's the one I have. It works almost all the time, but once a month or so it has issues and devices aren't recognized. I don't know what other options there are for extending the reach of a hub, but I need something.

Thx @Grandbear @RonnieOmelettes. Shouldn’t hub makers make their own extension cables or provide a cable longer than six inches? lol, I thought this stuff was supposed to work. USB c. Ha!

Have tried changing the cable orientation? Even though the cables are symmetrical, my Launchpad only works with a particular side of the cable facing up.

  • @espiegel123 tried every combination as you suggest. No signal.

  • This is the one I have - almost always works!

  • Could you test the cable with another USB-C device directly?

Thanks, @Grandbear! Out of three different cables this is the only one that works. Amazing that should be the case with such high tech. Surprised Apple doesn’t make such a cable. Anyway, problem solved thanks to you.

I'm glad it worked for you. From what I understand these are intentional limitations of the standard: each cable is supposed to be able to negotiate its own power rate to avoid overloading it, and solving that for extension cables is not trivial.
