Sax in the city (Swam Saxophone, laid-back beat)

Sax in the city
Just some relaxing Swam Saxophone over a laid-back beat.

Creative notes
In celebration of the 2nd anniversary of my first track back in September 2022, I proudly present #14.
While this doesn't quite hit the productivity mark that others achieve here, this one came together quickly by my standards, just a month after my last effort.

I imported a slowed down drum loop from GarageBand's Vision and Verse pack into AUM, used Atom2 to record the bass line, then noodled some Swam Tenor Saxophone phrases on top (via keyboard).
Once happy I had 'something', I moved it to Cubasis, added some structure, some synths (my usual OB-XD, Tal-U-No-Lx, Model D, and Synthmaster), and ornamentation (Mononoke, Cubasis e-Piano), and here we are.

I'm aware it sounds a lot like a keyboard player rather than a Saxophone player, but I wanted to retain some of my 'natural timing' so didn't over-quantise it or use variable expressivity and try to fool anyone into thinking I was GeoTony!

Outstanding! That sax is sublime. Love those little subtle effects in the background. Great mix and production. I think I’ll listen again.

Edit - I heard even more the second time around. Nice tasty little bits. That deep bass drone really works. Nice!

  • Fantastic chill vibes! Definitely taking notes!

The un-humanized sax fits really well over it. With noodling, I tend to overuse the faders for the 'neato! It's real instrument' and am working on reigning that in

In this, the stark lack of use just clicks here

Ooooo and that sudden jarring end

    Yeah, that's just delightful

Raining here in Savannah today, so very appropriate. Nice build of sounds and good ending, too. I’m not sure that it sounds “dehumanized” although I appreciate the sentiment. A friend of mine once said “A first rate fantasy beats a third rate reality any day.” IMO, we should go for the best creation, not the best recreation

  • Really nice. Firstly the bass sound is fab. As are the notes you play on the bass. Love the gaps as much as the ones you play.

And it matters not one jot that the sax isn’t a sax…the point is that it sounds great anyway.

    Lovely track 👏

  • Smooth and cohesive. The bass stood out for me, too. Congratulations on the second anniversary of your first track! Did you make music at all pre-2022? If not, all the more impressive.

  • I was tempted by the title, breaking my rule to listen to the oldest creations first only to find I get a mention 😊
I loved the track, bass line, swoops, sirens and thunderstorm in the background, beautiful.
@BillS is right, the sax stands on its own merits and remember its quality not quantity and this is 🏆
Also interested in the answer to @myapologies question…

Thanks to all for your positive feedback.
Glad that the saxophone sounds pleasant to more refined ears than mine.

In response to the requests for my 'origins story' from @myapologies and @GeoTony , I'll save most of it for the book and movie, but will share that I sung in a choir when a youngster, then got a Kawai K4R and Roland JV2080 in the 90s but didn't use them for much more than 'patch preview' and play-along stuff on keyboard.

iOS Garageband was my gateway DAW in 2021 after I heard my son messing around with it, and I spent 2021 making recreations of things in GB, starting with this, which for obvious reasons I won't share:

I then discovered AUM and it gave me what I was needed, which turned out to be a playground for musical ideas and instrumentation that I can then expand upon in Cubasis.

So, yeah, been a great 2 years sharing creations here, and hoping for many more with such a talented group of creators frequenting the place and providing inspiration to do better!

  • This has such a great groove and I really like the production. A nice lo-fi feel that works perfectly with what you have created.
