Alexa… what just happened?

A few days ago I posted something on another forum. Something strange happened. I was cancelled. That has never happened to me before… ever. I tried to figure out what I did wrong. It was a purely instrument piece. Absolutely no lewd sexual or politically sensitive lyrics. Can music itself be offensive? The song was over-the-top heavy metal. Perhaps the moderator thought I was poking fun at heavy metal. Actually, I was. The song was titled Dark Helmet, named after the character in the Mel Brooks comedy “Spaceballs”. The movie is over 37 years old. By this time, I would think all of the merchandising opportunities have long since dried up, so I don’t think that was an issue. I won’t post it here because it’s “ludicrous”. It’s on my SoundCloud page and, if nothing else, it’s good for a laugh.

May the Schwartz be with you.

I’m so impressed. Getting an instrumental banned is a legendary achievement… Link Ray’s “Rumble” did it but based on the fear of gang violence in the 50’s.

But I listened to the music here and it’s a severe satire of metal that some deep into head banging or a mosh pit experience would find convincing.

I would be curious to visit the forum in question for more clues. Throwing you out could bring more listeners if people expected to be protected from you vicious jokes.

Again, you’re legend grows with your ability to cover so much musical territory with convincing efforts.

  • Well perhaps your Schwartz is bigger than theirs? And, has anyone played this backwards?
Everyone knows that's when the true message reveals itself.

And... Spaceballs 2 'the search for more money' is apparently in development as of June 2024, so maybe folks were worried about that ?!

Hilarious and brilliant at the same time Paulie, haha. Super inventive with all the changes while still managing to keep the flow. Now you need a parody AI video to go with this.

Weird you got banned for this. Maybe a mistake? Perhaps get someone there to ask on your behalf what you did wrong. It's always possible it was an accidental ban, accidentally banned you while trying to ban someone else.

We should also bear in mind that @Paulieworld didn't say which forum or type of forum he was banned from.
My absolute best guess would be one to do with knitting.

Edit: It seems to be business as usual over at 'KnittingHelp' so I guess I'm out of ideas.

  • Congratulations! Would love to know which site banned an instrumental but hey, great fun track anyway and I’m glad I got to hear it before our mods inevitably step in!

  • This reminds me of the Dubstep Forum back in 2010 around the time Skrillex blew up. I asked one simple question about how Datsik and Excision came up with their bass in "Swagga", and suddenly I was ganged up on by a virtual mob of sullen pricks calling me everything from "troll" and worse. (This was also before SeamlessR created his "How to Bass" series on Youtube.)

In other words, Dubstep Forum is akin to KVR and Gearspace (formerly Gearslutz as it was called back then) - an online shithole. I've since learned "How to Bass", but I'll never forget signing up to a site only to be driven out by a bunch of sullen pricks stuck in the early days of Dubstep who refused to evolve with the genre.

I listened to your track and it sounds excellent. Nothing wrong or offensive. As with others here, I'm curious as to what forum this was.

I don't mean to disparage metal. I just got in a mood. I once had the chance to join a punk band. I was in a Pink Floyd tribute at the time so I passed on it. They were going through some lineup changes and rebranded themselves as "Lungbrush". They went on to become the biggest punk band in Chicago. Their frontman, Troy "Roach" Coates was a complete maniac on stage. Off stage he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Actually, the whole band were great guys. Sometimes I wonder what it might have been like to play with them. Sadly, Troy passed of a rare form of cancer, leaving behind a wife and kids. He was loved by all.

    Meet Roach...

    RIP bro. Miss ya.

  • Maybe the other forum screen titles on urbandictionary.com? Great high energy track - a lift from some of the sad (albeit excellent) creations on this forum this week. You’re putting those Jazz Session Band samples to good use :)

  • I like the phazory effect you dropped at around 2:20.
Maybe a genre specific forum you dropped this on ran by purists?

It could always be bigger! No complaints yet, but… just saying. I might just reverse the audio and see if there is anything in there. I hadn’t heard about the new Spaceballs. I looked it up and apparently they are bringing back everyone that’s still alive! Mel Brooks is 98 and still sharp as a tack. I hope he is still as politically incorrect as ever! It will piss off a lot of people. Yeah… bring it on!

Hilarious? I hope so. Brilliant… not so much. I wasn’t actually “banned”. My post just disappeared for no apparent reason. I have no idea what happened. I’m not losing any sleep over it. Thanks for listening.

You raise an interesting possibility. My wife is really into knitting and crocheting. She buys patterns and supplies online. Maybe we both clicked Send at exactly the same time and the wireless router confused our posts. Stranger things have happened.

I’m not going to mention their name. As I mentioned above, I was never officially banned. My post just disappeared for no apparent reason. I have since posted a more “serious” track and we’re all good buddies again. I will probably just move on. I’m glad a few ABF members got to hear it. It was a joke, and you guys “get it”. Thanks for listening!

Like I mentioned to BillS, it was probably just one of those “shit happens” things. The main thing is that you liked it! Thank you, my friend. Have a great day and keep on keeping on!

Session Band is great for someone like me. I don’t play any of those instruments, but I like them in my music from time to time. The newer updates to iOS have made them a bit sketchy lately. Oh well, I will keep using them for as long as I can. I don’t think I used any jazzy stuff in this one… but I could have! That probably would have made it even stranger. I’ll keep that in mind. Have a great day.

Phazory Effect! That sounds like a great song title. Don’t be surprised if I use it. Have a good one, mate!

Sounds like it might have been a copyright claim, as seems to happen on YouTube. It seems like those can occur with no discussion, because the host doesn't want to be sued.

  • There's that weird nagging part of my mind that just needs to know WHY?????
Oh well. Some things in life are just a mystery.
I enjoyed it. Rocking guitar and a Mel Brooks reference. What more could you possibly need?

It bugged me for a while. Then I figured... I'm not getting paid for this. Nobody got hurt. Nobody will even remember this tomorrow.

What more could I possibly need... Spaceballs 2, The Search For More Money. I can't wait!

Space Team Omega signing off. Over and out.
