  • That does look interesting. Thank you for pointing that one out.

  • Didn’t Modalics just release a stand alone plugin host as well? Why yes they did… it doesn’t have recording though, does have midi plugin compatibility and some built in filtering etc. And it’s free. Get both ;)

This free one is nice too for quick messing about with plugins on MacOS. It can also accept midi and audio in from iDAM.

Thanks for sharing this one too! It’s so nice to have a many options for people to read through so they can make informed decisions.

I know it’s been mentioned many a time here but Ableton Live Lite 11 comes free with Koala and I’ve read elsewhere that other hardware / apps give it away with purchase.

Most basic set ups will have plenty of room for growth in creating with the lite version.

Drambo has a Mac app too. I don’t know if it’s only silicon macs but it’s pretty great to use on Mac if they already own the app and if anyone has run into limitations on older iOS devices as the Base m1 Mac’s are better than practically all older iOS devices not on M1.

And not in the same category as hosting plugins like the other apps mentioned but Koala has a Mac app too that’s not bad if you connect a midi controller to it. Koala is such a well utilized tool for a touch screen devices that I would be remiss to mention that it suffers somewhat from that but connecting a controller to it makes it pretty cool.

So many options. So little time to utilize em.

Drambo is only compatible with Apple Silicon based Macs. It's not available for older Macs.

Koala standalone can be integrated pretty effectively with Live and other hosts, even on legacy Macs. I use Blackhole Audio Driver to get the audio in and out of Live. With the iAC Driver enabled in Audio/Midi setup, you can get midi to it too.

Thanks for clarifying, I definitely wasn't sure but usually a fair assumption to make that the iOS Apps more often than not aren't Universal Intel/Silicon. Though some cool apps here and there being both do pop up. Salome works on both chips for instance which is cool of Bram to have set up.

    Woah! 🤯

So I have had a Loopback setup with Blackhole/Audio Interface for a mic/MIDI Controller (an old Arturia Keylab Essential) and I would use IDAM with Ableton often but this iAC Driver you've shared seems to be the missing step of the MIDI equation that I hadn't found elsewhere in my online searches, and this will be super helpful!

I kind of gave up on a easy way of capturing MIDI data as it's been more friction than utility for my needs, I came from using Koala as my only instrument before last year and as of recent Loopy Pro has been the #1 (with Koala being brought in because I can't quit it lol) - Drambo's update last year was somewhat helpful but I had given up I think at that point.

I'm more used to sounds/loops than data and I have nothing to be too precious about when it comes to my skill level while performing. Loops/Sample Manipulation just click with me.

Either way, I super appreciate that tidbit none the less, you're very knowledgeable about many a thing as my brief time has proven time and time again with the many tips, tricks, advice, that you've shared throughout this forum, but this specifically is super helpful, so THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge. It's been very helpful to me in my musical endeavors, more than I could properly state, and i'm sure others would say the same.

This turned into a potential future case-study in how to have an unnecessarily long winded round about way of sharing appreciation to another person, but alas I felt the need, evidently. Cheers @wim !

I had no idea about it either until Koala's developer kindly turned me on to it on their discord channel.

That man is an ocean of knowledge. I recently watched all the videos on Elf Audio's Youtube channel to see if there was anything else I could learn within Koala as I knew there were some flows I wasn't taking advantage of. It took an hour or two and was immensely helpfup, but within the videos he would drop these little tidbits of information all nonchalantly throughout (a bit outside the exact subject of the video but not too far outside the scope) left me feeling appreciative and like a complete dumbass for not watching them sooner.

I've committed to reading manuals on apps going forward (when available) - a user on here mentions it often - and/or watching videos instead of blindly jumping in. You don't know what you don't know, yanno.

Oh wow, kinda AuM for Mac 🙌🤘

Or, isn’t this like a form of Apple Mainstage?

I have never tested Mainstage, but, what ‘I’ve seen in the past there’s some similarities…

  • They still have their beta version available, if you want to try it: https://blog.openplanetsoftware.com/post/757428483526983680/sessions-10-beta

Also, they've confirmed that they're interested in releasing this for iPad OS.

afaik, Mainstage does not host IAA apps (only AU) - so if this Sessions can do that it will, be on my list

I don't think IAA is a thing on Mac, is it?

[edit] Doesn't appear to be based on some quick digging. I don't think that's ever going to be something that apps on the Mac can do. The plumbing just isn't there.

However, with an audio driver such as Blackhole and with iAC driver for MIDI, any app that is midi controllable should be able to be integrated to any other that can receive audio.

Seems like it from looking at the demo. My first impressions is that it looks easier to wire up than MainStage and has a nifty scene and preset system. On the other hand, MainStage costs the same and includes all the Apple instrument/effect plugins, which IMO adds a lot of value.

Yes indeed wim, so glad you "paid it forward" on that tip re iAC!
