Solution to GAS

The real solution to GAS is to get ALL the gear you need and want, obviously 😎

    🏅

  • GAS = FOMO + search for workflow (sometimes thinking workflow is the same as craft)

    +1.

Workflow is so important to dial in. Make it more efficient, organized, with the least amount of friction to not get bogged down when inspiration strikes.

People spend way too much time worrying, tweaking, thinking, discussing about work flow.

Its the equivalent of guitar players worrying about pickups.

Do what feels natural and keep it fresh.

Yeah, the whole capitalist ethos of productivity has seeped far too deeply into the modern consciousness. People's jargon now regarding music often seems straight out of the office, or even the army 😂

Hmm. Disappointing to see a person I really respected the opinion of boil down my thoughts in a community post as “😂”

To clarify, my statement wasn’t meant to be steeped with “capitalist ethos of productivity” in mind, but I can see how it was interpreted that way without context, so that’s fine.

I have ADHD so being organized is a constant struggle and before getting a few templates and workflow down it was really difficult for to me to not get bogged down in the details of random shit because again, ADHD.

I used to get easily distracted while also actively spending time going down the wrong rabbit holes when I wanted to just make music.

Took me a while to just make music and it really did boil down to finding a workflow - so apologies for the “office/army jargon” but it is an active struggle to deal with daily.

I don’t have it in my brain to just focus on what I want to without making it frictionless. That’s just how I’m wired. So for others it might seem ridiculous or even funny, but it is what it is.

    All good either way, cheers.

Ah, sorry if you took that the wrong way, my post was a lighthearted reply to Ecou's comment, it was not aimed at you. I didn't reply to you, I replied to Ecou. Your previous comment was likely just included in the quoted comment. I don't particularly like the way the forum quoting system works in that regard.

And, of course, there is plenty of room and need to talk about workflow! Please don't take it as a personal criticism, it was a lighthearted, general observation only. Cheers

In all fairness, even if I had not gotten the notification from the forum because of their quoting system you aren’t a fan of, I still would have seen your comment and it still would have felt the same way. I appreciate the acknowledgment either way.

Anyways, ironically enough, your Gauss video helped me get into looping with Gauss which I just couldn’t understand until your explanation of the sequencer and somehow that led me to to find that I was much better at being in the creative rhythm with loops rather than blocks like I had been doing in Ableton.

So after much trial and error and many days/nights feeling shitty for not creating, and going down the time wastiest of rabbitholes, I finally found a style that helped me get into the groove. So cheers to that.

Edit : That video as well as you mentioning to read the manuals of the plugins to other people I should say. That’s been super helpful to sort out the plugins I’ve gotten or didn’t fully grasp. Cheers again.

  • My solution was to retire early and move to Asia.
    1) I literally have a certain amount of money I can spend every month.
    2) it’s a pain in the ass to have hardware gear shipped over here.
Maybe I spend 5-10 bucks on apps every month but I pretty much have everything I need now.
So yeah just quit your job and move overseas!

I meant more in the vein of process rather than workflow but even then, that’s just a hurdle people put up, myself included.

I think a part of it is a matter of different brain chemistry. Believe me, if I could just not get in my own way I would much rather. I’m truly envious of the idea of just creating and not getting side tracked. It’s a lifelong exhausting journey.

Either way, no harm no foul. Cheers.

Same! Getting out of our own heads and out the way… is not easy for a lot of us.
I’ve been working on this personally for the last few months after years of being in my own way. For almost everything. ……

Been making same progress but still more to go!

I found a solution to my GAS… realizing I suck at making music and no amount of apps will solve that :(!!!!!

this is the secret to creativity; it's about focus on the action of creativity regardless of if you suck or are amazing at it.

highest level is to just feel joy making things with what you have.

I switched to spending 80 percent of my time on studying or creating art and 20 percent on thinking about or buying tools.

also, I buy the best materials i can afford even if that means less of it.

Believe me I am far from organized and I spend a lot of time running after squirrels.

What I find helps me is i have a tendency to work in short sessions thru the day when my busy life gives me a break. I go in with a clear plan and alot of time I can stick to that for 5 to 15 minutes. If I don't I don't beat up myself. I just try to chase less squirrels the next time.

I’ll also give the best tip regarding gear:

The most important part of the whole damn thing is what you can hear. If you don’t have a good way to listen to what you’re doing, you might as well not bother.

I realized that I want to buy gear because concentration and creating are hard things. It's a form of procrastination. Use delay gratification. Ie: I will buy Y when my next song is completed or I will buy a new guitar when I can play this song that I'm working on.

I look at that only as a temporary state. Using your example, you can focus on the change and still = 10 projects per month, but it won’t be happening tomorrow or even next month.
It’s like the equivalent of being able to sloppily play a piece of music at 132 bpm just to say you can play it. You can also change how you practice and slow down the tempo until you can play the piece cleanly, eventually at 132 bpm again 🙂
