Send MIDI from iPad to PC DAW with Logic Pro iPad 2.0?

There's a module in Logic Pro for iPad called External Instrument which will send out MIDI from Logic Pro on the iPad to an external MIDI device, and receive the audio output from the device into the same channel. I have a 2 channel audio interface (Evo 4), and a PC, and I'm hoping to use a MIDI USB Hub such as this the DORE UMH-21 https://doremidi.cn/h-pd-36.html, and use it to send MIDI from the iPad to the PC. The idea would be to play VST instruments via MIDI in the DAW on PC and send the audio back to the track in Logic Pro, and preview it in realtime.

Does anyone have a setup like this that works or does it sound like it could work? I know this sounds kind of vague, but it's the first time I'm trying anything like this. I've used the audio interface on the PC and the iPad separately, and I've hooked up a MIDI controller keyboard to the PC and to the iPad, and I've connected multiple MIDI devices to the iPad using a USB hub, but never tried using the iPad as a MIDI source on the PC.

This is something that comes up all the time. There are many kludgy ways to go about it. Nothing particularly streamlined with what you've mentioned you have to work with. If your interface had midi capability it'd be a bit easier.

Try pc midi iPad in the forum search box. You'll get plenty of thread links. Apologies in advance for possibly making your head explode.

  • Looks like you do need to explore this a bit more and I think @wim is absolutely correct to recommend a search here. It can get rather detailed when you start looking at options and it is a topic that appears at least a few times a year. Personally, I think the EVO4 might be problematic with this setup as it doesn’t appear to have MIDI ports, but that’s my guess from afar.

  • I use CME WIDI Bud Pro on the PC and send MIDI to it via Bluetooth. That works well but I'm not attempting your 'round robin' use case.

  • Thanks all - I've done some searching on the forum with "pc midi iPad" as @wim suggested, and, oh yeah, there sure are a lot of threads on it, and they are all over the place. I'm very encouraged. I just ordered the DORE UMH-21, coming in a couple weeks. If I can get something interesting going, I'll post a video on exactly how it works, from A-Z.
