Is there a decent bass guitar app out there?
I have iFretless Bass and the Madrid Gagdget, but that can‘t be all?

Thanks guys.

  • I‘m still using Yonac ToneStack!

  • BeatHawk Total Bass is pretty good

I’m guessing you are talking about acoustic or electric bass guitar sounds specifically.

    Besides the ones mentioned…

    Apps

    iBassist
Steal Guitar Pro can do bass sounds on low strings
    Swam Double Bass
    Geoshred IAP SwamBass Pizzicato

    Rompler/ Sample Library apps

    Moodunits
    Pure Synth Platinum
    Bassalicious 1
    Bassalicious 2
    Decent Sampler
    Audiolayer

Then you have the file type or Multisample option or sampling option

    SoundFonts in any SF player
    SFZ in Audiolayer or isfiz
Multisample Bass sounds put in Audiolayer, Chameleon, etc…
EXS24 which I think in working in AL
Pitch one shots around - severs apps koala, etc…
Put a one shot across a keyboard - several Koala, AASample Player, Vancouver etc…
Slice up any bass loop or riff - sEGments, reslice, abu Dhabi in Gadget, koala etc…

I might be missing some but yea, not a lot.

  • The studio basses in Logic sound great as well.

  • Some very good bass guitars in the Cubasis Halion Sonic IAP too

  • Bassalacious 2 is probably the best option outside of Logic.

Guys, thank you for all the recommendations, especially @Poppadocrock for the comprehensive list.

One question for iBassist owners: Is it possible to let iBassist create patterns in a certain key?

Edit: checked it out myself, it can 😊

  • My recommendation is to get a cheap bass guitar and play it through some bass amp app (I‘m using Bass Deluxe amp). It lifts the bass quality to a whole new level. I’m not a good bass player by any means but even when playing with my thumb like a weirdo it just sounds great :)

Playing real instruments is so much more fun than programming tracks.

Agreed Bass Deluxe is very good, transparent and easy to arrive at an acceptable tone without a lot of humping around. Cheap too if I remember correctly.
ToneStack Pro has several presets to choose from and Nembrini Bass Driver and BlackiceBetaGamma are also good.
There are plenty of tutorial videos if you’re having trouble deciding.

Yeah, I was already thinking about buying a real bass guitar. That said, the libraries available for desktop are fantastic, I love the Scarbee bass guitars ( Rickenbacker! ), Orange Tree is also great. They are fun to play just because they sound so good.

Even smaller footprint plugins like MODO Bass sound very good. Something like that would be great for iOS.

I wish too @ikmultimedia would bring MODO Drum and Bass to iOS.

  • Pure Synth Platinum has a suite of very good acoustic and electric basses. Along with loads of synth basses

  • If I can’t be bothered to plug in my actual bass, I always just go back to Madrid.. it really is one of the best bass guitar emulators I think

I prefer the Bassalicious 2 standalone or Pure Synth Platinum Bassalicious 2 expansion over Madrid myself. But Madrid is good for sure. And Madrid is considerably lighter weight.

  • Swam Double Bass sounds good too, but it’s just upright bass…although it can have gnarly sounds if you put an amp sim or other processing after it heh

thx - always thought bassalicious was only synth basses, so I will have a look at it more closely.

isFizz with a couple of pretty good SFZ sound fonts I've found is a nice lightweight solution too.

I found the bass packs I use and some other useful ones here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/isfizz/id6470708963

Bassalicious was synths only. Bassalicious 2 has acoustic and electric basses as well.

If you already use Pure Synth Platinum, it might make more sense to get the Bassalicious 2 sound pack instead. All the same sounds are there.

Yes I have found a few similarities...but it was only $14 and it adds a nice range of synth basses too. The Electric and Acoustics are in fact very similar to PSP tbh.

Guess I am looking for the quality and "authenticness" of the Modo Bass or Sampletank 4 basses :) - but in iOS I doubt it is possible.

Believe it or not, some of the best sounding basses I'm getting these days are the ones I've been creating with TAL-U-NO-LX. Even for hard rock music. Instead of using the many other great options available, I'm tweaking my tones to a much finer degree and still getting bass sounds that cut right through my mixes. Sometimes simpler is better.

I don't think I explained clearly. Bassalicious 2 and the Pure Synth Platinum Bassalicious 2 IAP are identical. It just incorporates all the Bassalicious 2 sounds into PSP rather than having two separate apps. As for the quality comparison to the desktop apps, I can't say.

I would buy it all over again as a standalone. My problem is that one needs to use Gadget to use it. It sounds great, but I never click with Gadget.

The Madrid Gadget and several others now have AUv3 plugins. You no longer need to use them solely inside Gadget.

    !

    That’s great news. Thanks.

  • The best modeled electric bass I ever got by far was with Nambu.

Actually I'm using the Stockholm AUv3 with a collection of REX bass guitar loops sometimes, plus WAV loops sliced in Drambo's Flexi.
I wish AmpleSound would start building iOS apps though...

  • Get Gadget when it’s on sale and the Madrid add on will prolly be discounted too…worth it even just for that, and then you get all the other good stuff too

  • Looks like another big korg sale just dropped today haha. Didn’t expect that until next month tbh

Gladstone + Madrid is a helluva duo… too bad you can’t get them separately or just included… but still worth it imo.. great emulation and very tweakable too
