You beat me to the announcement! I was just waiting a few hours to make sure it propagated in the App Store, but apparently it was quick this time.
It's official, Fiddlewax Pro v1.1 is now out! This was based almost entirely on the feedback from the AudioBus forums, so THANK YOU to everyone who's been actively engaged.
What's News in Fiddlewax Pro v1.1
Of course, now I'm working the next round of changes for v1.2.
Keep the ideas and questions coming!
Cheers,
Adam
Congrats Adam.
As I mentioned in the other thread, thanks for the changes in bpm range. Much appreciated.
Cool! Thx, Adam
Great work Adam! These are nice improvements - MIDI file direct export to other apps is implemented perfectly.
Also huge to be able to shift chords up and down octaves.
Looking forward to all the other stuff in the works!
Wow, thanks Adam...
Developer of the month alert .
So... 'open MIDI in'... works with MIDI Editor - I just tried it. Appears to recognise different instruments as different MIDI tracks which is nice. Weirdly it FiddleWax doesn't appear to offer MIDI Editor as an open in option, so you have to 'open in' Audioshare, and then from there 'open in' MIDI Editor.
That's cool - but I was just wondering if there are any other sequencer apps that allow 'open in' for MIDI. Something that will play more than one MIDI track at time would be great. I know MTS does, but I don't really want to part with £20 .
Thanks Adam.
@matt_fletcher_2000 - Yeah, I spotted the "Open MIDI in" bug. The correct type identifier is set (as public.midi-audio), but some apps also do other checks on file parameters before telling iOS that they are capable of opening the file. Long story short, I found the parameters it was looking for and that should be fixed in v1.2 so you won't have to go through AudioShare. Good eye!
@cruise - A few of the instrument audio samples had a short bit of dead audio time at the beginning. It wasn't super noticeable, but it was bothering me (especially on low notes that exaggerated it) so I manually adjusted the trim to make them more responsive.
There were also a couple samples that got a bit strange at the extremes (zoomed keyboard layout at highest/lowest). For example, the strings sound used to taper out at the low end, but now it transitions over to a cello which gives about an octave lower range than it had before and is nice for sustained bass accompaniment.
Great app Adam. I'd taken a hiatus on app purchases the last few months, but I decided to pull the cord on this one, and I'm glad I did. A big part of my reasoning was to have a composition tool that also provided some education into music theory/song structures, and this really fits the bill for me.
Excellent! Glad to hear it, @funjunkie27.
Not sure if you found it yet, but on the info overlay (the "i" button in the top right corner), there's an advanced settings section. In there you can now turn on keyboard hints which may be helpful for learning notes as you're soaking in some of the theory.
No, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the tip Adam!

I recently went on a binge screwing around with MIDI files and seeing how I could move them from app to app. This particularly appeals to me because I was just interested in coming up with backing tracks to add a guitar to, or perhaps taking a popular source material (TV Theme song, Christmas song, whatever) and messing around with it with different synths and beats. And I didn't appreciate how many free MIDI files are available on the web for this kind of stuff. I enjoy the challenge of "programming" the parts myself, but it's very time consuming.
So as you said, MultiTrackStudio really is the king of the MIDI stuff. Literally, you put a MIDI file in AudioShare, tell it to import the MIDI file into a new (empty) track, and it will open however many tracks there are in the file. Also, it seems to recognize pretty well which MIDI instrument is appropriate for each file, and sets up each track with bass, drums, etc. So I literally do nothing beyond importing the MIDI file, and MTS has now set up a whole song for me that sounds pretty close. I can then make it even better by using IAA apps (which are sadly a bit wonky still), or the internal SoundFont player. As you said, it's $30, and most people already have a good DAW. But it's my favorite DAW, and I have AURIA.
Your question, though, was about which apps (other than MTS) allow you to use "Open In" for MIDI files created in FiddleWax Pro. Caustic is another excellent alternative. Almost equal to MTS in convenience in terms of how it splits up the tracks and allows you to assign them to a machine. People criticize the sound quality of Caustic, which I understand to a degree, but it's also a very narrow-minded perspective. Considering that the BeatBox plays .wav samples (which are very easy to import) with full velocity and pitch control, and the PCMSynth plays .sf2 files, it's really quite easy to get custom sounds in and out of Caustic.
I think Midi Editor (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/midi-editor-music-sketchpad/id718065823?mt=8) is an amazing little tool. It needs some work, particularly to lift that 32 bar restriction on import, but it's super useful as a small, universal app. And a good companion to Fiddlewax, as it would allow you to make small tweaks to chords and note length that maybe didn't come out as perfect as you thought when you looped them in FiddleWax.
@adamkumpf - Does quantization apply to ALL instruments, or only the drums? I must be crazy, but while the drums are very neatly tidied up with quantization turned on, I feel like the notes I play with the other instruments are more freehand, even if the setting is on "% by 4" or "% by 8"
@StormJH1 - Yes, quantization applies to all looped events. Both the start of the note and the end of the note snap-to-grid based on what level of quantization you select. The level of quantization is marked as divisions per beat.
Just to be clear for anyone else trying to make sense of the quantization... In 4/4 time (where a quarter note gets a beat):
@adamkumpf - Makes sense, thank you!
Adam, you know what would really make your app that much more awesome? If you could add Chord recognition to it. Sort of like that of an Arranger keyboard where the use is having backing tracks playing as the chords change. Look up a program on PC callee One Man Band by Joe Maas, i think, he did something like that for the PC but I wish it was available for the ipad. That would be so awesome. There are countless people out there that would pay for this as it really helps a lot when building or sketching out songs. What do you think?
Here is the link to the One man Band website:

Thanks!
@Musikman4Christ - Great suggestion! I've added realtime chord indication to the feature request list.
I agree that know what chord you're playing could be super helpful when composing, especially when you like the sound of particular notes and want to quickly know what name is given it to it.
It'd also be a nice way learn as you play -- I'll get on it!
Hi Adam,
Loving the update. Noticed it now keeps working when you put the app in the background which is nice.
Couple of further little requests.
could you put global stop / play button in the audiobus tab for the loopers. This would allow you to be in a synth app tweaking knobs while FW is driving the synth and allow you to cleanly stop the sequence without having to return to FW to press stop (which will glitch the audio).
have you considered being able to automate some midi CCs from FW? StepPolyArp allows this and its a great feature when driving a synth via midi out. Maybe something for the roadmap?
FiddleWax is really useful as a midi controller for other synths. Thus the above 2 requests.
Thanks.
Excellent suggestions, @Matt_Fletcher_2000. Thanks!
I'm wrapping up v1.2 right now, so these will get added to the feature request list for v1.3.
As for MIDI Control Changes, I like the idea and I'll look into how that could be integrated. Just don't want to overburden the interface. Which Control Changes in particular? Modulation and Pitch Bend? Or also the more low-level ones (like per-channel volume, etc.).
More info about v1.2 coming in the next day once it's submitted (and then 7-12 days for it to go through the review process I'm guessing). I'm super excited about it...
Wow... such quick dev cycles!
Velocity / Modulation / Pitch bend / After touch / Pan would be great for me.
To be honest most of my apps have MIDI learn so with say modulation and one other I can map them to whatever params I need in the synth. I understand you don't want to overblow the interface etc... I'd personally be happy with just 2 or 3 that I could map at the other end. The key thing would be how you could modulate and record that modulation in FW though. Guess that would need some thought.
What's going to be in the next release? Are you able to disclose?
Thanks for the clarification, Matt. I've made note of it.
The v1.2 details are forthcoming. Just bundling it all together now -- I'll comment back in the Q&A thread with more info shortly.
Can't wait.
Have found the app really useful. As well as a sketchpad, I want to use it as my main way to drive synths - one synth at a time - with the output going into Audioshare - for use in Gadget where the overall track is.
I must admit that I didn't think I would get much out of this app, but it is proving to be a go-to for generating some very good multi-layered ideas. Love the new low bpm settings and how solidly it all just works. Also @adamkumpf has to be congratulated for his excellent uptake on ideas coming from this forum. Cheers!
