In the here and now, the Chinese government is moving forward with next generation nuclear (pebble bed reactors, also known as molten salt reactors) which is far, far safer than the kind of nuclear power systems which can meltdown.
These new reactors cannot meltdown, plus they can use the spent fuel from the old style reactors in a safer way.
Bill Gates has investments in both next-gen nuclear systems and fusion power. And based on what I've been seeing over the last couple of years, we're on the precipice of having working fusion reactors in... maybe... the next ten years or so.
