Music Player that supports both custom folders and playing by metadata (like VLC on Android) ?

I am looking for a music player that works the way I used to work with VLC on Android:

  • Add a custom folder to the music library settings of the app.
  • let the player scan the folder to build / refresh the music library database.
  • be able to play my music by Artist, Album, Track or Folder.
    What I don't want:

  • Apps that need to create an internal copy of my music files and waste storage space.

  • Apps that are only folder based but do not sort the music library / database by metadata.

I have my music stored on my Nextcloud server and would like to use the downloaded music without copying it to any special folder or have to import the files into any proprietary music library.
It's probably one of those iOS quirks that forbid that, but I notice that VLC on iOS seems to be much more limited than the Android version.

  • Foobar2000

  • Neutron is the ultimate audio player, but has a steep learning curve.

An nice alternative that I think will do what you want is Flacbox.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried Foobar, but it sadly doesn’t allow me to select my Nextcloud folder (with the locally cached music files) to be added to the music library.
Flacbox looks interesting but because it’s free I am not sure what kind of inconveniences in the form of ads or data mining are built in.
Neutron looks great but not sure how it works with Nextcloud.

  • Apparently Neutron works with Nextcloud using Webdav, and is on sale at the moment. (Again, this app is for audiophiles and has the most features, but is not easy to use.)

Flacbox (and probably Foobar) also uses Webdav and other cloud services. Flacbox has subscription or lifetime payment - you can use it free with some ads, or you can watch an ad video and get 30 minutes of the full version to try it out.

After some testing today the winner for me is Foobar2000. It's the only player that allows simply adding a custom folder "the traditional way" without any useless copying or other iOS sandbox related restrictions.
Both Neutron and Flacbox are using very limited proprietary file browsers that get stuck in the iOS sandboxing "feature".
Neutrons Webdav support does not work well with Nextcloud when you have 2FA enabled on your cloud server. It's a pain to set up with app passwords etc. I don't want to stream from the cloud anyway because I want to be able to listen to my music offline (for example on a flight). Only need a simple way to get the music files onto the phone. To do this I am now not using Nextcloud, but LocalSend that is great for cross platform file transfers.
On top of that Foobar2000 is FOSS (Free and Open Source Software).
