Getting Really Bad Again

Another collaboration with David from the U.K. (aka Callmedezz).

  • I like what you have built around his vocals. He does have a very interesting style.

I found this guy on Looperman. They have a lot of vocal tracks to choose from. What I like about this guy is that he is always in key. I think he might have perfect pitch. His timing is always spot on. He posted this acapella showing a tempo of 152 bpm and key of Bm. I cut the tempo in half to 76 to match the mood. It’s a rather depressing song, so the slower tempo sounded more appropriate. I used some sampled sounds that sounded much grungier when rendered at a lower bpm. I think they call that lo-fi these days. Thanks for listening!

  • I liked your backing tracks, Paul. Is it really a collaboration, though? It’d be cool if you played an instrument following his vocal line. The vocals are usually independent of the backing tracks. You could double it with a horn, synth, string, anything. Maybe next time.

It's probably not a collaboration in the old school sense. He lives over 3000 miles away, and I wouldn't recognize him if we passed on the street. However, under the circumstances, it's the next best thing for me. I miss playing in a band, but those days are over. If I could get gigs that were all less than a mile from home, played from 7:00 to 9:00, and somebody else dragged my equipment around for free, I would probably still be doing it. The late hours are probably the main reason. The older I get, the earlier it gets late.

I have often thought of getting one of my keyboards out and hooking up. The thing is, I love to sit outside while I do this stuff. Even in the winter I like to sit by the sliding glass doors and look out into the yard. When I'm done for the day, I just close up my iPad and move on to something else.

Hope you survived Helene. The pictures I have seen are horrific. I thought tornadoes were bad. With a tornado, we can just hunker down for an hour and it goes away. I know a few people in Florida. Thank God nobody was hurt or suffered any great loss of property. Take care!

  • Nice understated production

  • Sounds good, the backing is nicely understated and gives room for the vocal.

To my taste the vocal is over-tuned, but that's how most music sounds these days. My ears aren't getting used to auto-tune. :-)

The tempo of the vocal is 76bpm to my ears, just recorded at double the bpm. That's not a 152bpm for sure! A recent tune of mine is coincidentally exactly the same. The tempo is set to 152 but it's definitely a 76 BPM dirge!

  • Nice work Paulie. (I actually like the lyrics too quite a lot)…works great man

For some reason I can’t see anything under the line of text?

After posting my comment it appeared! Like magic!

Vocals and music gel well together :)

  • @myapologies @klownshed Thanks for picking up on that. I wanted the vocals to stand out, so I tried to keep it simple. I don’t think this guy uses any auto tuning. I have done a few of these with him and have not noticed anything that would indicate that. Usually you can hear something that’s not quite right. I think he just has perfect pitch and great control of his voice. I am sure there are others who have used this vocal track, but I tried to make a point of not listening to them. He told me that he likes the way I “reinvent” his music. Thanks for listening and commenting.

@yellow_eyez A lot of his lyrics tend toward the dark side. I thought they were a bit depressing, and not at all the way I’m feeling at the moment. I just enjoy working with his stuff. His sense of pitch and timing make it really easy to work with. Glad you enjoyed it.

@Fruitbat1919 Glad to hear that it’s working. A lot of this stuff is like magic to me, too. Have a great day!

Sorry about that. It really does sound tuned to me. Perhaps I am over cynical or have cloth ears. Or both. I’d bet my custard cream it’s tuned though. :-)

I do like what you did here. It does the vocal justice.

Now I’m curious! I will ask him next time.
