«I Wanted to be Found» Richard Yot & JanKun collab (indie / dream pop)

edited October 3 in Creations

Another collaboration with @richardyot. As many of the previous ones, Richard sent me a raw draft of the song and let me work my way on the arrangement and production. His original draft was in 4/4 but I felt the melody and theme of the song needed a different feel, so I only kept his vocals and went for a 6/8 time signature to build the track.

I believe 1 or 2 more tracks and we'll have enough songs to release our first collaborative album !

As usual iPad only, LP4i + bunch of apps. Hope some of you will enjoy.

Lyrics in the spoiler

I wanted to
Just let you know
The doubts I felt
But didn’t show
Because I just feel so numb
I feel so tired and overcome

I wanted to be found
I wanted solid ground
But now I find I feel so sad
Why did life turn out so bad
I wanted to be found
I wanted you around

I wanted to
Just let it go
I should have done that
Long ago
Because I just feel so cold
I feel so tired and so old

I wanted to be found
I wanted solid ground
But now I find I feel so sad
Why did life turn out so bad
I wanted to be found
I wanted you around

And now you see
I feel so bad
I’m on my knees
I’m going mad

I wanted to be found
I wanted solid ground
But now I find I feel so sad
Why did life turn out so bad
I wanted to be found
I wanted you around
But now I’m left here on my own
I’m as lifeless as a stone

Good stuff as always. The production is different to Richard’s style and it works a treat on this song.

It builds nicely and gets pretty epic by the end.

I’m crap at music theory — I count the beat as 4/4! I’m sure it is 6/8 where the snares hit on the 4 but I hear them in 4/4 with the snare on the 3.

My only criticism is I’d have positioned the song title a little lower in the cover art :-)

  • Thanks @JanKun for transforming my extremely basic demo into this wonderful alt-country epic, it's always surprising to hear the artistry you bring to my rather simple songs, you always add layers of sophistication well beyond my reach.

John, why won't you come waltzing Matilda with us 🥹
Thanks for the artwork, I kind of like it the way it is, but will give it a shot a little lower and see if I like it more!
Btw have you noticed that I slightly lowered Richard's main vocals as per your previous advice? Don't be afraid to tell me you haven't 😉

Vocal level is very much down to personal taste. I'm not a vocalist, and have come to realise that when I listen to a song, I'm listening to the soundscape as a whole and don't concentrate on the vocals or lyrics in the same way I think (many if not most?) other people do.

I did notice the vocals towards the end were mixed a little lower, but in other sections they're still more prominent than I'd have made them. Having said that when I'm working on somebody else's vocal I tend to mix them louder than I'd mix, say, my own, as I'm aware I'd treat them as 'just' another instrument.

As for the time sig, I still hear 4/4! I can count 6/8 if I try but it naturally feels 4/4 too me lol

So no, no Waltzing for me ;)

Talking of which, is 6/8 still a waltz? I find it easy to count 3/ 4 waltz time 1-2-3, 1-2-3, but the accent never came naturally with 6/8. The dotted note accents of 6/8 confuse my 4/4 quantised brain.

Technically I don't think you can call 6/8 a waltz. Though I would say those could have a similar feel depending on the tempo.
I personally count this as 6/8 cause I clearly here one bar (allocated to one chord) with 6 pulses. I worked on the arrangements a few month back, so I don't actually remember exactly the details of each elements I put there, but as my usual habit, I tend to incorporate polyrhythmic elements like stacking vertically things in 2, 4 or 8 over things in 3 or 6. The modulo 2 over 3 rhythmical patterns usually give to my ears a sense of completeness or fullness. But I guess that's a deformation. For years, I have liked playing fingerpicking polyrhythmic patterns where my thumb picks in 2 or 4 and the others fingers in 3 or 6. I practiced until I was able to seamlessly switch the pattern between the thumb and the other fingers while playing. I think when I achieved that, I might have broken something in my brain 😂

Actually after reopening the logic project, I can confirm that I did stack elements in 6/8 and elements in 4/4. Especially on the acoustic guitars. In one of them is playing in 4/4 and is pretty audible all along the track. This might be the element driving your ears in 4/4 !

  • I like those wailing guitars behind the smooth vocals of @richardyot. It’s a beautiful song. Hope you guys make that album.

I should be the one thanking you Richard, Been butchering so many of your songs already... As long as no-one take the time to comment that it sounds like crap on their speakers...😉

I never associated your voice with a Beatles sound, Richard, but Jean’s orchestration brings it out, I think. Good work, as always. Look forward to the album!

Thanks, I think the album is only one or two songs from completion.

Thank you for dropping by Mike!

  • Lovely feel to the whole thing and the Beatles struck me as well, especially the second half of the song 👌
