Best app for recording midi output?

What’s the best app for recording midi output from generative sequencers in AUM? I’ve been using Atom 2, but it doesn’t seem ideal for very long clips. Having to decide on the number of bars before recording is a bit limiting.

MidiTapeRecorder its fully functional AU3 and FREE

Records ONLY, but records every midi bit including expression etc.
The drop the file in your fav sequencer and edit. Recommending Helium Atom2 or Xequence2 for that

Actually you can't edit Expression data in Atom 2 (unless there's been a recent update, which I don't think there has but I no longer have it installed). CC Editing was meant to be 'on the roadmap' at time of release in 2021 but it never materialised! So personally I've never been able to make much use of it because I'm a Geoshred user and Linnstrument player. Disappointing but lesson learned - don't buy apps based on the promise that missing features will be implemented further down the line. Helium and Xequence 2 will allow you to edit CC though, so best stick with one of those options.

  • +1 for MIDI Tape Recorder as @audiblevideo mentioned. I've used it quite a bit, and it has never let me down and has handled some very busy MIDI output from several tracks at simultaneously (although it can only record 4 at once).

I've also used Atom 2, Helium and Xequence 2. If you're wanting to record MIDI from a large number of tracks in realtime, Xequence 2 has worked well for me in the past, and it really has a beautiful interface. Helium can only record a single track at a time (as far as I know), although I use it all the time for things that don't demand that.

  • Thanks! I’ll give Midi Tape Recorder a try.

It seems to be £9.99 now. Is that the same one? By Uwyn?

Yes this is the same app and unfortunately for you, it's no longer free 😩 It was free for quite a long time since it was introduced a couple of years back.

It was free on launch, now £10 tho

Edit: ah, I see others already mentioned that fact

  • I forgot about this app, by Ryouta Kira, who is one of my favorite developers. I've only used it a few times, but it's free, and there are in-app purchases, but they are just tips, so you can certainly try it out and see if it works at no cost.

10 bucks for MidiTapeRecorder is just a bargain for a lovely app!

Oh, yes- I’ve always had that app. Will that do the job? The same person who made KQ Dixie. A genius!

I think you’ll have to try it. I’ve experimented with it and it appears that it can record up to 16 channels at once. Now that I’ve remembered it, I’ll probably test it further and see what it can do.

  • If anyone is following this thread for advice, here are my conclusions so far:

I tried and returned Midi Tape Recorder. It’s made for quite a specific purpose and didn’t fit my aims. If you are looking for the same kind of setup as me, keep that in mind and look into it further.

Ryouta Kira’s Midi recorder doesn’t open in AUM, you have to just route to it, and can’t route playback back to AUM.

Atom Piano Roll 2 is still my best fit despite the annoyance of it being fiddly to set up long clips, and needing to set up the length before recording (this is also true of Midi Tape Recorder so I’m not sure why it was recommended).

Still open to more suggestions as that Atom length-setting is unnecessarily awkward, and poorly implemented.

Hmm - I'm not sure why MIDI out from MIDI Rec wasn't working for you to AUM. I tested it out and it works fine. AUM appears as a MIDI destination and the input from MIDI Rec comes in on 'AUM' Destination for me. I'm still on iOS 17 in case it matters.

  • In case you want to try Xequence: Apart from being able to record everything with likely the same accuracy as MIDI Tape Recorder, it also gives you full editing capabilities (including per-note isolated MPE expression editing), unlimited tracks, a comprehensive arranger, pianoroll and controller editors, a comprehensive touch keyboard, and a few other things I tend to forget 😃 it's the same price as MIDI Tape Recorder.

It might be overkill for your use case, but if you have any questions, drop them here 😃

MTR doesn’t need its length pre-set. You can start recording , record for as long as you’d like then stop.

What other things made it not work for your use-case?

MIDI Rec is an IAA app, so you need to start it stand-alone. Enable "MIDI Rec Out" in its MIDI Ports menu for it to appear in AUM. You can also access the AUM Source and Destination ports from that menu. So, MIDI Rec supports the full range of possible Virtual MIDI ports.

Indeed, that's one reason I sometimes grab MTR over Atom2. I don't know why Atom2 lacks that very useful functionality

  • Takeamidi https://apps.apple.com/nz/app/takeamidi/id6503200884 might be what you want. It records continuously into a buffer, the length of which you can set (10 seconds, 1 minute, 10 mins). When you think you have a good take, select the portion you want from the buffer then drag and drop into Atom or your preferred editor. Atom will automatically expand the bars to accommodate the take.

If you're gonna spend a bit of cash Xequence 2 must be a better option than either Midi tape recorder or Atom 2, simply because you can edit the data. Also comes with two really good MIDI AU keyboards. I use them all the time!

Xequence AU Keys and Xequence AU Pads are separate apps, not included with Xequence 2.
And yes, all three apps are great and worth every penny.

One workaround is to start an empty instance, set a number of bars longer than you're likely to usually record, then save that as a preset. After that you can just load the preset, record, then reduce the number of bars to fit.

You're quite right @wim. Think I misremembered because the internal keyboards in Xequence 2 are basically the same as the separate AU versions but thanks for correcting my misleading post. I use the AU keyboards all the time. Xequence is the best app I've found for editing MPE data but I think MPE requires an additional in-app purchase from what I remember. Or at least it did then. Perhaps @SevenSystems will hopefully be able to confirm whether that's still the case?

You're correct, the MPE editing is part of the Enhanced Pack IAP ($4.99 US) which includes:

    • Extensive support for MPE with per-note expression data editing
    • Optional support for (N)RPNs
    • Loading & Saving of instruments for re-use in other projects, 40+ factory presets included

That's the only IAP though. Everything else is included.
