An EP, and an apology.

Alright, apology first. I wanted to apologise for having gone off the rails the past few months or so. That's all there is, no excuses for my behaviour. I took a step back to evaluate how and why I was acting the way I was, and I'm sorry.

Then, I wanted to share my EP here.

Created over the course of the summer and oddly enough released on the first day of Autumn (it was supposed to be released 31 August, but that plan fell through), I created this entirely in Nanostudio 2. The tracks sound the way they do because of my using Doctor Vibe on the busses. Can't recommend that plugin enough, especially for that compressor. Pretty brilliant plugin.

I mastered this EP in HarmonicDog's Multitrack DAW. Easier for me to get files in and out of it, and I can use it in portrait mode on my iPhone. For the mixdown, I used Grand Finale 2 followed by NoLimits2 for catching any stray peaks and Youlean's Loudness Meter to make sure the levels were appropriate.

You can give the EP a listen in full, or skim and skip around through it. However you listen, do please enjoy it. Cheers. 🍻

At the moment, I'm still stuck in a music creation burnout. My creative focus has shifted to Inktober and visual arts for the foreseeable future.

As far as my interacting with the forum, I'll be pretty much sticking to the Creations section. Matter of fact, I honestly should focus more on replying to the wonderful music posted in this section rather than other sections.

  • No excuses - life is too short to not test out everything present!

Music, art, drones, dancing, golf, tennis, or, even chess - yeah, we can be happy whatever!

I know the feeling to go in too much in stuffs - all of a sudden the most interesting things in the world become a burden…

So Jason, follow your heart and do what’s best for you for the moment…

    Love from Sweden!

  • Impressive, like it!

  • @HolyMoses Thank you so kindly for the nice words mate.

@Gsus The apology also extends to you and others I've wronged. Hope you can forgive.

@Pierre118 Thank you so much. :) I try.

  • Glad you are back at it and you are feeling better too. This place wouldn’t be ABF without you….

Great work on your EP, I’m going to check the whole thing out it as I only heard a couple of tracks but so far I like the sounds a lot; you make me wanna get gadget and ns2 ; (I’m sticking to one workflow till I write something new but it’s always fun to think there are other options out there on iOS)

Great attitude @jwmmakerofmusic and welcome back!

I can only speak for myself but of course you are forgiven. However, I would remind you, time shows the sincere from the insincere and, public platforms have long memories. Sounds like you still may need to work much harder on forgiving yourself, and learning how to avoid unnecessarily putting yourself in these situations in the first place.

  • Thank you @Gavinski . Much appreciated.

@Gsus You're absolutely correct. I am sincere when I say I'm always willing to learn from my mistakes and grow as a person. It always seems to go two steps forward and a half step backwards. Sometimes I regress too far back but am open to correction as well. If I start making an arse of myself, I expect to be called out and told some harsh truths. I turn out better for it in the end.

  • No worries. Hope you are okay.

Thanks mate. Better than the last few months for certain. I was such a karen, geez. If you see me slip into my old ways, slap me in the face. 😂

  • @jwmmakerofmusic i must have missed a meeting because all I’ve seen is all the help you have given me in the last few months. Keep on keeping on buddy!

Your EP slaps my guy. Those kicks knock!

I appreciate the introspection, while I have no clue what you’re referring to, that doesn’t matter. Striving to be better is always a great path to take.

Hit me on DM if you ever need to chat though! Line is open

    Cheers.

EDIT: Apology accepted none the less! 😅🙏🏽

  • This is all news to me. Keep up the good work, bro.

  • @offbrands @LinearLineman Thank you so much mates. :) Glad you both love the EP. Means a lot to me.

I will confess for those who don't know or didn't notice that I had been acting like a twat the past few months here and there until it came to a head. This happened outside of the Creations section. A fair few people noticed it (including a couple of my close friends as well as our illustrious site owner). My friends (and site owner) and I had good heart-to-hearts about my behaviour, and I took a sabbatical from here. Took some time for self reflection, and to learn and grow, and to return with a long overdue apology.

And I'd rather those friends and our site owner be blunt with me and offer me some stern hard truths about myself rather than sugarcoat things, afraid they might "piss me off". I may be entering middle age, but I still have plenty of room to learn and grow from my mistakes. I can't learn and grow if things are sugarcoated, and that's the honest truth!

I also wasn't that nice to a couple of irl people either the past few months, and I offered them an honest apology as well. Again, I learned from these mistakes through hard advice and self reflection during my short sabbatical. I'm too old to be acting like that.

But anyways, I'm working on a new album. This time, it'll pretty much be covers and remixes of tracks by Sash! I'm a bit spent creatively, so this is not only an exercise in keeping my production skills sharp, but also to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sash! coming next year.

What a great step in the right direction for you. I hope you're proud of yourself for listening to those who offered their piece. Also to be a standup enough person to get the benefit of the doubt and a well intentioned come to jesus moment.

Self-reflection is great and a major part of growing up that I wish we were all taught! It's been the biggest point of pride in my own personal life, I'm glad you gave yourself the grace and time to work through it. Like you said, can't learn or grow if it's sugarcoated. Gotta be honest with yourself first and then hope that others do the same. .. gently lol.

Stoked on the new album and thanks for the explanation! Definitely not necessary but kind of you to share this tidbit.

100% wasn't digging for more info as you might recall I already accepted your apology no questions

  • Great sound!
Your track motivates me to spend some time with NS2 again :)

  • Jim sometimes you’re too hard on yourself - everyone can have a bad day/week….

    The EP is awesome man

NS2 Ftw (still might pick it up cuz of you)

  • @offbrands I know you weren't digging for more info mate, but I figured I'd explain my thoughts a bit further in case it helps others to grow and learn from my own mistakes. My cousin, one of the IRL people I apologised to, is proud of me for taking responsiblity for my actions.

@rs2000 Thank you so kindly, my friend. Yeah, NS2 is a great music creation environment. Sometimes I prefer Gadget, or FLSM, or Koala, but then NS2 beckons me and I return to that. Cubasis 3 is still my go-to for vocals, and now I use HarmonicDog's Multitrack DAW for mastering (since I can use that in portrait mode, lol).

@yellow_eyez I agree, sometimes I am too hard on myself, but this wasn't just a bad day or week but rather months of piss-poor behaviour. That's the difference, my friend. @Gsus , @Michael and @Gavinski can all confirm this as they've observed this the past few months. So this thread is me taking some steps in the right direction and attempting to make amends. It's the right and healthy thing to do. :)

That said, thank you kindly for the compliment on my EP. You definitely should pick up NS2 as it's a spectacular music creation environment. I wouldn't necessarily call it a DAW per se as it lacks audio tracks, but I've yet to find anything easier for creating music. Also, check this out.

First song for the new EP completed.

Impressed by your apology, although I haven’t in no way been affected by what you are describing…

It’s one of the hardest things to do for most people, admit to fault. Well done!

Take care of yourself and your relations both on- and offline. And, if I may ask, keep being the creative force we’ve seen here, it is much appreciated.

    All the best!

Good on you to keep accountability to the person you want to be.

Remember to, when you’re ready, give yourself some grace and find some version of pride in your decision to learn from it and how you’ve handled this.

    As @DMfan said, impressed!

  • I love your music, Jim! 🤩

  • Oh dear, I forgot about replying here. My bad, lol.

@DMfan Thank you so kindly. Yes, I'm making sure to foster the relations I have both online and offline and making sure to keep a clearer head on my shoulders. And you know I'll be creating new original music in the future...probably in November once Inktober is done with. (I'm not posting the Inktober pieces anywhere per se. Just keeping them to myself and showing some of the better-looking ones with a couple friends privately, lol.)

@offbrands I'll come around to being proud of myself for taking steps in the right direction eventually. I'm just making sure to take things slowly. Then again, pride comes before the fall, and I indeed fell very hard the past few months. So I don't want to have my ego reinflated. 😅 Bit of a double-edged sword, that. But yes, keeping accountaility for my actions is super important, not just for personal growth, but to save everyone from the headaches I've caused.

@Luxthor Thank you so kindly, my friend. :) That means a lot to me. I try to turn out good music. Once in a while, I'll start a project and abandon it. Like the new version of "I Need You Tonight" (an old song I made years ago). I started off with the loops (one for verses, one for chorus, and of course the part where the lead comes in (aka the "drop")), but then I lost the passion and got stuck into a creative block. Been remixing a couple of songs by Sash! to try and get myself out of the rut, or at least to keep my production skills sharp. As mentioned above, I'm doing Inktober, and it does take away from my musical creativity, but I'm rebuilding my music creation from the ground up. :)

  • @jwmmakerofmusic If there is anything I know from our interactions, it is that you are genuine and sincere. Your self-reflection clearly shows that too. Keep enjoying making art in which ever medium and "don't sweat the small stuff....and it's all small stuff"

The EP sounds great Jim. I really dig the reggaeton beat one. Like the way it morphs.

    Love and peace my friend.

  • I also wasn’t aware of any controversy. Hope things are working out. I’m listening a bit before dinner and liking it. Very upbeat and cheerful. If I had to describe it, the first track makes me think of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays doing modern beat music, if that’s even possible. Great mix, arrangement and production. I’ll try to listen more after dinner. Peace bro.

  • @reezygle Thank you so kindly mate. I try to be as sincere as possible, but I let my ego get the better of me. But I'm still growing. Glad you dig "Salvador" (the Reggaeton one). :) Glad you gave it a listen. Love and peace to you too mate.

@Paulieworld Yeah, I stirred up some controversy the past few months, but I decided to put it to bed once and for all with the apology. Things are definitely working out thankfully as people are mostly forgiving. I've never heard of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays before, but I'd definitely give them a listen. I appreciate the compliments. I hope you enjoy the rest of the EP and that it doesn't make you lose your dinner, lol. (I'm just kidding. ). Peace mate. :)
